Metal shavings on the dipstick?

I was told by the mechanic today that I have metal shavings in my oil. They were in the oil on the dipstick. Not the transmission fluid, it's the engine oil! What does this mean? I know it's bad, but how bad? It's not my fault, it's the mechanics. I took it in for a blown head gasket - it was pouring antifreeze, never overheated, I've been diligent with my oil changes at 2000 - 2500 miles, the engine had absolutely no problems until they changed my head gasket so they are definitely going to have to fix this and eat the costs, but I am just wondering what I am looking at possibly. Thrown rod maybe?Metal shavings on the dipstick? There are many things that could have caused this. Before your head gasket was change water could have leaked into the cylinder and caused it to hydraulic bending a rod or a valve. The ticking noise you heard could be coming from the valve train which would have been affected by the head gasket change. You will probably be looking at a pulling the motor to find out what is causing this noise. Pedro says changing the oil filter is all you need to do WRONG. Do not drive this vehicle any more, have it towed to another garage if you don't like the last one. If the ticking is the valve train your fix should be inexpensive but if it drove it will cost you more. However with metal shavings in the oil I would say your problem is worse. If the tick high pitched it is from your valve train and the shavings could be valve seats or valve guides. If the tick was low pitched with a deep echo it is coming from the bottom end and could be bearings. Anyway don't drive this car any more it will only damage it more!

Driving it that short of distance from the shop after them fixing it and something goes wrong! Any good shop would realize they did something wrong and would fix it at no cost to you. If you have problems with this shop find another. You said about a warranty, any dealer of the same type of auto should honor it and would be glad to have your business.Metal shavings on the dipstick?yeah your engine is totaled what ever they did it mad it worse your bearings are shot. if they did this then make em pay for itMetal shavings on the dipstick?depends on the amount of shavings...you can have a magnet placed in your oil pan...if you threw a ros you'd know itMetal shavings on the dipstick?metal shavings mean nothing..unless your engine is not working [overheating,,,banging noise,,etc] just change oil and filter and dont worry,,,nothing in a head gasget change that would cause shavings,,, it woul'nt cost more if u wait,,,just keep driving...Metal shavings on the dipstick?it just sounds like when u blew the gasket that it could have also threw that rod and smashed against the block and shavin off the flakes into ur oil! so i would make them do it again and yes have them eat the cost!!!!Metal shavings on the dipstick? Why do you thing they are responsible? They fixed what you told them too. Anytime you get water in the oil it is a good chance that the water will ruin the bearings which is what happened in your case.Metal shavings on the dipstick?youve got definate bearing wear.... a crank kit at the very least....sounds like the head gasket allowed water to the crankcase at time of failure,,,,water and coolant are NOT good lubricants for bearings..Metal shavings on the dipstick?changing a head gasket wouldnt do that. if the noise is low, then its probably a rod bearing ready to go. if you threw a rod, it would be louder then a tick.now dear, this is just a guess, you can run this by your husband and see what he thinks. what about when they were cleaning the block and heads, some of the steel got into the oil drain holes and went into the oil pan, if it did then maybe the bearings picked up some of them. thats just a guess, i could be wrong.
