How much to get a head gasket changed?

on a beretta??? and how much would it cost to get a basic paint(just like black or blue) done?? im lookin to repair a car and need some prices. thanks. How much to get a head gasket changed?v6? about 950.00 to 1000.00 all depend if heads are still good and not warped or cracked.

try macco probaly aroun 299.00 to 400.00 basic paint. How much to get a head gasket changed?I agree with the ASE MASTER TECH above, however:

When you replace your head gaskets, the compression in your motor will dramatically increase...which will probably blow out your piston rings and/or crankshaft bearings, main seals, etc, etc. ...... Plus your entire cooling system is probably full of a greasy sludge.

Once you need new head gaskets, there are probably many other weak links which also need to be looked over.

  • Changing the head gasket of a 2001 Cadillac Catera?

I have just bought this car 3 weeks ago and maybe it wasn't the best deals of all times. I took it today to the mechanic to check for a coolant leak and he called me back with three problems: radiodor needs to be replaced, water pump needs to be replaced and the head gasket is blown.

    Water pump ~ $210

Radiator ~ unkown yet (makes me wonder if I could use the sealing stuff you can get at wal-mart.)

    Head Gasket ~ $1300 (labor + parts)

This is not cheap - specially for a recent graduate college student.

    My questions are:

-- Does that seem to be reasonable prices?

-- How hard is to fix the head gasket?

-- Head gasket problem is a pretty big deal?

-- Anyone wants a Cadillac Catera?

Note that my experience with cars is limited. I should have gotten a degree in mechanical engineering; not electrical. That would have certainly helped. But I am pretty handy and got some common sense for the most part.

Thanks in advance!Changing the head gasket of a 2001 Cadillac Catera? Those prices are certainly reasonable IFF they are genuine problems. I would question why a 2001 model has a bad radiator or a bad water pump. How many miles??

The head gasket should not have blown unless someone overheated it, which could happen if it was abused.

My advice: Take it to another mechanic. You can stomach the radiator and water pump....the head gasket is a MAJOR deal, $$ wise and also potential for ruining the engine. There are 3 ways you can tell if the head gasket is blown. You may get coolant in your motor oil. Pull the dipstick and see if the oil looks milky or cloudy. OR you are getting combustion gases in your coolant (heater core fills with air and won't heat or gases bypass the radiator cap) OR after you let it sit overnight, start it and see if there is water coming out of the tailpipe. (Note: water is a by-product of normal combustion and I am not talking about a few drips after a long time running........I am talking about water coming out IMMEDIATELY after you start it.

If any of these 3 things are happening, you have a blown head gasket. If it has over 150K, I would salvage the car and NOT fix it. Let me know.Changing the head gasket of a 2001 Cadillac Catera?Take this car bach to who you bought it from.

How hard would a head gasket repair be?

im wondering how hard it would be to change a head gasket on a 1995 honda civic would i be able to do it in my driveway? or should i let a train mechanic do it?

how much would it cost for just the head gasket and how much would the garage charge. How hard would a head gasket repair be?You can do it yourself for about $200 in parts + about $40 to resurface the head at a machine shop. It would be a good learning experience. You'll also be learning about replacing the timing belt and wter pump. If you've never done it before, expect it to take you a week or so and you'll most likey screw something up and have to take it all apart again. I'mnot discouraging you. The learning experience is well worth it.

You'll need a head gasket kit. The kit comes with several other gaskets that should be replaced during the job. You'll also need a timing belt kit and water pump. Since you have to remove the timing belt to remove the head, you may as well replace the timing belt, water pump, tensioner pulley, idler pulley crank seal and cam seal. There aren't many special tools you'll need, other than a torque wrench, feeler gauges and seal puller.

good luck, you gotta learn sometime!

PS...DON'T put the new gasket on 'using a bit of sealant'. This adds a thin layer, making the new thickness TOO thick. And giving a weak layer to leak again later. Remember, the gasket has a metal construction to withstand HIGH cylinder pressure. A thin layer of sealant is a weak spot to %26quot;blow out%26quot; later. How to change a cylinder head gasket on a PEUGEOT 106 ?So...are you going to do it yourself???

My 1993 106 had the head gasket done last year, along with a lot of other work. If you can possibly get rid and start again then do. I part ex'd mine today as the head gasket was the first of a long list of things to go in very quick succession.

Does anyone know how hard it is to change a head gasket on a 96 dodge avenger.?

if you dont already know exactly how to do it, i suggest you don't try and leave it to a professional.Does anyone know how hard it is to change a head gasket on a 96 dodge avenger.?Depends on whether it is a 4 or 6 cylinder, and whether you are a better than average mechanic. Get a repair manual and read up on the R%26amp;R section of what it takes, and if it sounds like greek, you might be better off to pass on doing it yourself. How hard it is will depend on your skill levels in mechanical work and how well you can understand and do something you you have not done previously. Also, you need tools, like a torque wrench, for proper assembly.

How hard is it to change a head gasket on a rover 414?

i bought a car ( rover 414 s reg) there seamed to be no problems with the car but on my second drive in the car the engine over heated . there was no water in the cooling system, so topping it up i carried on and few more miles the water was gone again and was smoke coming rom exshaust. i was told it could be the head gasket has gone so i burning water in the fuel. how hard is it to replace the head gasket? any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.. thanksHow hard is it to change a head gasket on a rover 414?Check the oil filler cap for creamy mayonaise type gunk. check the coolant bottle for the same.

If it is clean, the head gasket HAS NOT failed. Its usually the inlet manifold gasket allowing coolant to enter the cylinders.

If it is the head gasket, Its one of the easiest modern engines to change. Get a haynes manual for the basic description, but I'll give you some extra advice its best to follow.

Do not use cheap no-name gaskets. Only use the oem payen type. The land rover MLS gasket is the best. Get one from a land rover dealer. tell them you want it for a Freelander 1.8. Same engine.

Do not bother with the up rated oil rail available. Some people will tell you its needed. It isnt exept on the freelander.

Measure the liner stand-proud above the block face, using a straight edge and feeler gauges. It should be more than 2 thou. 1 thou is acceptable, less than that and the liners have sunk and the new head gasket will fail again quickly. New engine time.

The head bolts can be re-used as long as they are in good condition, screw each bolt into its location with the head still off. They should screw easily to well below the hight of the head without effort. if they bind at all, get new ones.

Look at the head face, if there is a groove where the fire ring sits, it has gone soft from over heating. you can get it skimmed flat if its not too deep, and use a head saver shim. better off with a new head.

DO NOT skim the head if it is flat. they are surface hardened and skimming can remove that layer.

Make sure both faces are very clean before re-assembly.How hard is it to change a head gasket on a rover 414?If it's the 414 it's defo the Head Gasket thats gone! these engines eat them!!

This job is not difficult for someone who knows what they're doing but if you've not done it before then it will be difficult.

Get a Haynes Manual for the car this is a MUST!

You will need a Torque wrenchHow hard is it to change a head gasket on a rover 414?its not that hard, but having over heated it you could have warped the head, just makesure you get the timing correct there is a tool to lock it in place and most of all replace the head bolts, i didnt and when reassembling it i snapped one and had to drop the sump which was a work up, because they are stretch bolts you can only use them once, apart from that i found it rarther easy, before i did it everyone umed and ared about it but dont let them put you off, av a go its goo learning, by the way mine was a rover engine not the honda engine, good luckHow hard is it to change a head gasket on a rover 414?not easy.

HOW TO CHANGE A HEAD GASKET?

I have a 1994 mercury cougar, and its blowing white smoke out of the tail pipe that smells like gas. i need step by step instructions on how to do this job.HOW TO CHANGE A HEAD GASKET?That job is complex and should be done by someone with experience- especially with an overhead cam engine. It's OK to know how to do it. Take Walt's advice and read a good repair manual.

After the head is off, it still needs to be checked for warpage and cracks and reconditioning it cannot be done with any common tools around the house. If you have the skill and plan to do this job, make sure you have a way to get the head to a machinist. I've already said too much, if you never have worked on an engine.HOW TO CHANGE A HEAD GASKET?Spend the $20 and buy a repair manual. I don`t have time to write a book for you with step by step directions for some one that may or may not know what they are doing. And if you have to ask how. Chances are you have no skills whatsoever, and probably no tools eitherHOW TO CHANGE A HEAD GASKET?You should know this is not an easy job to do, not just because you have to take the whole top of the engine off, but when you put it back together you need to torque every thing back down in a specific sequence. The best thing to do is to take it to a shop, I know it is going to cost a lot, but at least you know it will be done right.

If you can't afford to take it in then go and get a repair manuel for your car type and year. I like using a Chilton Auto Repair manual, they are done by people who take each issue and do it from start to finish showing step by step what you have to do. A manual is about 20-25 dollars, you are also going to need among other tools a torque wrench, possibly tubing wrenches, (they are like open end box wrenches, but the opening is smaller so it will fit over the tubes for the carburetor or throttle body because these will need to be taken off with out being broken off, because these are easily broken).

These are just some info that I can give it there is a lot more, so go and get a manual and or talk to mechanic about what is involved in this kind of job.

Good luck to you....peace....HOW TO CHANGE A HEAD GASKET?the 232 v6 ford used thoughout the 90's had an iron block and aluminum head. after countless heat cycles (running the car, getting it hot then letting it cool) the different expansion and contraction rates of the metals will cause the head to crack. white smoke is steam which means you are leaking coolant into the combustion chamber. your head is cracked. you can try some sealant but you are likely looking at a costly repair. i hate to say it but its probably time for a new car, or at the very least a new engine.

    for future reference:

    white smoke=coolant

black smoke=unburned fuel and you are running rich

    blue smoke=burning oil

they are all badHOW TO CHANGE A HEAD GASKET?This is not exact.. and no way conclusive as i;m tired lol...but from what i can remember:

    DISCONNECT BATTERY

Remove all HT leads + Spark plugs

    Take off rocker cover

    Remove water pump

    Remove Air filter and housing

    Remove Inlet manifold

    Remove exhaust manifold

Mark pulley timings up on the cam belt so you can make sure when the belt is put back on it is all in time..if the timing is out there is a high risk of killing your engine.

Release tensionsers and then remove auxillary belt (fan belt) and your cam belt.

    Remove cylinder head

Wellah! your head gasket is reveled..make sure you put the new one in correctly. And then re-assemble...it is strongly advised that you replace all your gaskets once this has been done (i.e Water pump gasket, rocker cover gasket, exhaust flange)

Also..you sure its the head gasket? check for oil in water and water in oil..is it over heating?.. this is a big job to do so make sure it is what it is. People do make a big fuss over this job...its not hard as long as you are confident and remember ho to put it back together

  • How much does it cost to have the head gasket changed on a Peugeot 106?

I know it will vary from place to place but a rough idea would be great so I can see if my mum can afford itHow much does it cost to have the head gasket changed on a Peugeot 106?as others have said, it will vary depending on where you take it.

if it's a diesel 1.4 litre then i wouldn't bother. Or if you do then get it fixed and sell it, as it's not worth bothering with. For some reason the 1.4 diesel is rubbish, talking from experience here, the water pump went first, which meant topping up with water almost daily, overheating if you drive for more than 10 miles and then a warped head, a loud bang, and lots of smoke. so far since then it's done it twice more, cost 400 in parts (total) and 180 labour (each time).

For the record, a head gasket set and the new head bolts cost just under 70, a head skim (essential) around 40, new cambelt (essential) 30, and new cambelt tensioner (essential) 25.

Now i advise ringing around lots for the bits and labour costs. last time mine went it came out like this:

Total 165 just for bits, when you take labour into account, (say 45 per hour for a 4 hour (ish) job) that's another 180. plus vat at 17.5% equals grand total 405.38p.

Now you know that, go to e bay motors and look up peugeot 106 in cars and automotive and see how much another one is. and get a 1.5 if you want a diesel (lots better reliability) or a 1.4 petrol.

my new car is a vw golf with 12 months mot, bought locally for 275 plus a certain pug 106 as deposit. therefore 130 saved, and a vw will never die.

Why was i charged so much for head gasket change?

It was on a 95 firebird and here's how the bill reads: Engine assembly - R%26amp;I = 476$ then cylinder head gasket R%26amp;R = 646$ then the head gasket set = 98.75 then oil and filters and ****, equaling like 50-60$ and somehow this all ends up costing me 1347. Now i was in a vocational school where we took apart engines and i remember doing head gaskets was not that hard so does anyone know if its normal to charge that much for all that crap? It doesn't seem right to me and i think i got ripped off. I had another offer (after the fact) for someone to do it for like 500$ but he is a good friend of mine so i don't know. Only educated answers please. Why was i charged so much for head gasket change? It's about right if they had to pull the motor to do the head gaskets. I hope they did a valve job while it was apart. Why was i charged so much for head gasket change? You got ripped off. Usually shop mechanics have their own little method in seeing if you know anything about cars or not, or they just take a wild guess. If they think that you do not know anything about cars, they'll charge you insane prices for stupid things.

Another assumption is that usually people do head gaskets and oil/filter themselves, so if you go to a shop and do it, they're assuming you're a newbie. Why was i charged so much for head gasket change?Im not sure but I think the heads were cleand and machined likely to the block was machined. and resurfaced. Often when a head gaskette fails its not because of the gaskette itself but because of warpage between the head and the block. If they also rebult the head I would say you got a pretty good deal. Why was i charged so much for head gasket change? It looks about right. If you have a V8 the labor guide shows 15.5 to 16.5 hours (depending on options) to replace. Not sure what labor rate you pay, but here it is $80 an hour. V6 labor is a little less.

ok.. i changed the head gasket on my 2000 civc ex and now it wont start. as soon as i finished the install the car started right up and then i gave the car some gas up to about 4k rpms and then it started to stumble and run like a misfire and cut off. i checked the compression the fuel and the spark and have all 3. when the motor is at top dead center on compression stroke the rotor button in the distributor is pointing at the #1 plug spot as its supposed to be. when the distributor is pushed back towards the fire wall as far as it can go, it acts like it wants to start but doesnt... i am stumped!! have no idea what to do next... if anyone else has had this problem or knows how to trouble shoot this problem please let me know asap!!!! THANK YOU!Changed head gasket in a 2000 civic and car wont start now?Check your timing marks again on the timming belt sometimes they slip. Or try to take the distributor out and just move the rotor one way or the other untill you get it You are not stupid dont even think like that!Changed head gasket in a 2000 civic and car wont start now?something is out of timeChanged head gasket in a 2000 civic and car wont start now?OK, lets see. It's got fuel, spark, and compression. Um, what could it be. Have you check for AIR. The fuel part of this equation is actually air/fuel mixture, with out the air the fuel won't ignite.

The problem could be some blockage in the air inlet tube or air filter box. I have had vehicles with mice nest in the air box causing the vehicle not to start. I had a truck last spring that is parked all winter, the guy got ready to pull it out and start driving it, but it wouldn't fire. After about 2 weeks off fighting with it, he ask me if I could take a look at it. I opened up the air box and a hole family of mice jumped out. We cleaned out the air box and put in a new filter. The truck runs fine.

Another possible problem could be a dirty Throttle-body or idle air passage inside the TB restricting air flow causing the engine to flood out and stall. The TB can be check by just opening the throttle plate and checking to see how much carbon is built up inside.

    Hope this helps. Christopher

What is the procedure for changing a head gasket in a 1999 plymouth voyager. Is it a difficult job.?

I recently brought a 1999 plymouth voyager 2.4L with 98000 miles. And I discovered to late that the radiator had been drained, and filling th coolant bottle is not enough to fill the water jacket. The results, I'm sure is overheating, and overheating=blown head gasket in short order. Now, that I have gone and done it...how can I fix it.What is the procedure for changing a head gasket in a 1999 plymouth voyager. Is it a difficult job.?You probably have more than a head gasket to worry about. The engine is probably ruined. You should take this car into a mechanic to get this fixed right. You might even want to see how much a used engine is installed. This is because when a head gasket blows, it's seldom just the head gasket. The cylinder head or block could be warped or cracked as well and if it's cracked or warped too bad, replacement is the only cure. The oil situation makes this more likely that the engine is history. What is the procedure for changing a head gasket in a 1999 plymouth voyager. Is it a difficult job.?So you drained the radiator and you tried to fill it up by topping off the overflow? If I read that right... a head gasket will probably not be the only thing wrong with it. The head will probably be cracked or warped also. If you noticed it and shut it down before it done any major damage.... Then yes, changing a head gasket is a big job. You have to pull the cylinder heads to swap it out. Take the heads to a machine shop and have em checked if you do it yourself. What is the procedure for changing a head gasket in a 1999 plymouth voyager. Is it a difficult job.?Overheating does not automatically mean a blown head gasket. Do a cylinder leakdown check to see if it's actually blown first.

If it is blown, you're really going to need a service manual to do the job correctly. It's not a difficult job but there are many places where you can screw up and do more damage to the engine. At the very least, you need to be absolutely sure that you get the cam timing right. (And since you're going to be pulling the timing belt to do the job, replace it with a new one. It's cheap insurance!)

Even an experienced mechanic will do a %26quot;sanity check%26quot; in the service manual before proceeding. What is the procedure for changing a head gasket in a 1999 plymouth voyager. Is it a difficult job.?if you see milky color in oil and a lot of steam out exhaust pipe will need head job.

It involves tearing the top of the motor apart.

and people are right saying machine head.

Also have to tourque bolts on head and if you mess that up will still leak water.

Sorry of luck man that is going to cost at least 500-1000 dollars at a good shop. depend on how bad it leak can try stuff like Bars leak.

I would only try one time though that stuff if used too much can build up on heads and make mess. What is the procedure for changing a head gasket in a 1999 plymouth voyager. Is it a difficult job.?That is completely dependant on your skills / time / and ability to NOT throw heavy things when frustrated.

Because it is a van it is certainly a bit tougher than the average car - but it is not terrible (like the ford FI V8's); but if you have a chore changing an ALT or Waterpump - then it is better to pay a shop.

Because that is a VERY long and big job, hit up your local auto parts store for a manual on that one - it is WORTH the money. What is the procedure for changing a head gasket in a 1999 plymouth voyager. Is it a difficult job.?you need to pull the entire top half of the engine off that means unhooking and unbolting every thing that is on your head your intake maifold can stay on and your exhaust manifold can stay on but you will need to crawl under your van and un bolt the exhaust from the exhaust manifold once every thing is done and your head is ready to come off with a braker bar break every head loose and un screw them once done you can remove your head now you need to remove your intakemanifold and your exhaust manifold then you need to send your head to a machine shop to check for cracks and warpage once the head is repaired then your ready to put it all back together you are going to need all new gaskets for the upper half of your engine witch they sell as a kit bacause those engines wre noted for this problem and your going to need all new head bolts do not use your old head bolts or any gaskets then you need a tork wrench to torke your head bolts down and your intake bolts and your exhaust bolts now your head bolts are tighted in a patteran witch you can find the patteran on the net or call the dealer or buy the book on the van and by the way its not a 2.4 its a 2.5What is the procedure for changing a head gasket in a 1999 plymouth voyager. Is it a difficult job.?The 99 van has a 2.4 not the 2.5 that was on the older vans!iowayoungman is mistaken!

First things first. Before you start tearing the engine apart, fill it with coolant and let it run. Look for signs of white smoke or the odor of coolant at the tailpipe. If there is no sign at the tailpipe, shut the vehicle down and allow it to cool. Check the oil, after cooling, for a milky looking substance. If there is no milk in the oil, then it is time for the final two tests.

Do a compression check on the engine. If that checks ok, it is doubtful that the head gasket needs replacement. Seeing as you have most likely stressed the gasket, If may be a good idea to re-torque the head bolts.

One trick to see if there is a head gasket problem is to take an exhaust gas analyzer and test for hydrocarbons at the radiator (remove the radiator cap and do not allow coolant to touch the probe) Hydrocarbons mean that you have a bad head gasket, the lack of them is a good sign!

With the additional information, it seems like it may be a head gasket. As bostonianinmo said, the best thing is to get a shop manual. Be very careful when you reinstall the head and timing belt, that motor will bend valves very easily. What is the procedure for changing a head gasket in a 1999 plymouth voyager. • How do you cahnge a head gasket?

Need to know if a mechanically inclined, non-mechanic can change a head gasket on a BMW? I can fix just about anything, have changed a starter and other minor things before, very little auto mechanic experience, but not afraid, willing, and intelligent. Is there anything other than un-bolting, removing and replacing, re-bolting? Or is this something that an experienced mechanic should tackle? Input appreciated. How do you cahnge a head gasket?Basically you remove or disconnect all wires hoses etc. on top of engine, get brackets out of way (if any attached to head)! Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold! (You can leave carb, or air intake on )--Then you of course have to have valve cover off to access headbolts! You have to un-hook and remove pulley for timing chain! Best to do this with crankshaft sitting at %26quot;TDC%26quot; so you can get timing marks lined up right again when re-assembling! Once all the headbolts out, - you should be able to lift the entire thing out %26quot;as an assembly%26quot;! I usually leave manifolds on if possible,- as I don't need to buy more gaskets for them --! Now you need to clean both surfaces up real good, - be careful that you don't %26quot;gouge%26quot; the aluminum head!! You need to check surface of head (down middle, and corner to corner both ways), - to see that it is not %26quot;warped%26quot;! You can't put warped head on and have new headgasket %26quot;not leak%26quot;! If head warped, then you are going to need to remove both manifolds, and take to a machine shop to have re-surfaced (if warp is vey small), -- or possibly heat treated to remove warp, and then machine surface to make perfectly %26quot;streight%26quot;! Also have machine shop check head over and see if any other damage that would make it un-useable! I worked in BMW garage in 70s they were a %26quot;piece of cake%26quot;, but there is quite a bit to doing it now because of all the pollution stuff!

Go buy a Haynes Auto Repair Manual for your year and model, and it will give you step by step information, -- and from there you can decide whether you want to do it! Cost is around $20 or less at AutoZone (where I by mine), --and lots of other %26quot;better%26quot; auto parts supply houses! Don't settle for %26quot;Chiltons%26quot;, - Haynes is a better manual, and has wiring digrams in back of book too! Covers everything on car except rebuilding transmission! How do you cahnge a head gasket?I've been a tech for 30 years and have not ever done nor do I want to do one. But its more a matter of your comfort level. First thing to do is buy a quality repair manual, and see if there are any special tools needed to do the job. That would pretty much dictate to me whether i want to invest in the special tooling to do one job, and if it would be worth it to do so or pay an experienced, tooled-up tech to do it. Unfortunately, the BMW dealer here is over $115 per flat rate hour so it may be worth it to attempt it yourself in spite of the tool costs.....................

And be aware of the tolerances that BMW specifies, things don't just fit together, they have to match. How do you cahnge a head gasket? If the engine is in running condition go to a parts store and ask for for a liquid head sealer they will point you in the direction of off- the-shelf products which promise to repair the damage (cracked heads poor gasket fit etc.) . otherwise, take her head out for a magna flux at the rebuild shop, flush the coolant jacket and radiator core, replace the head ,exhaust and intake gasket and reset the timing to bmw manual spec. Truly a time consuming and spendy job when done alone, but I did it and so can you.How do you cahnge a head gasket?not the best one to do as a beginner, go buy the book and read it twice and go step by step.

    Subaru impreza, changing head gasket?

i bought a pre facelift subaru impreza as a project, it has been off the road about a year. but turns over and runs ok. until it blew a hole in the radiator, fitted a new one as i needed to move the car. im 16 and im an aprentice mechanic, and was wondering how easy it is to change the headgasket as its obv blown and pressurising the rad, when i take the top cooling hose off the exhaust gasses come out the hose, so the gasket it obv well n truley gone. is there any other things i should do to insure the car will be reliable once the engine is out? and is it to difficult to take the engine out? i want to up the power in the future but its more of a project car at the mo. im plannin on fitting new gaskets, cam belt and tenioners, and get the heads cleaned and refaced. but was wondering if its a difficult job to do and is there anything i should be aware of? ive change head gaskets on smaller striaght 4 engines like peugeots and fiats, and had no problem. any advice would be great :) thanksSubaru impreza, changing head gasket?if your going to pull the motor its not that hard. i can pull out my sti engine in about 3 hours. helps that i have just about every tool known to man.Subaru impreza, changing head gasket? If it's and N/A Impreza, you don't need to pull the motor to do the head gaskets. There is plenty of room to pull the heads with the motor in the car. I've done it. Not that hard really. Buy a shop manual for your car and it should be pretty easy. Now if you are talking about the WRX then yes you should pull the motor.Subaru impreza, changing head gasket?I would suggest getting a compression and leakdown test done to ensure the HG Is blown but from the looks of It you have that pretty much figured out.

Obviously the Engine does have to be pulled but It doesn't have to be stripped down completely as there Isn't much for lines and breathers on the covers, Heads definitely need to be decked along with the Block, Id go with OEM Gaskets when you do put It back together, I'm running OEM on my 2.5 and running 25 PSI no problem :D Pick up a set of ARP head studs and have at it. It wouldn't be a bad time to have the block honed and machined for some 99.5mm pistons as long as you have the funds.

Good luck with the tear down!

How hard would it be for a newbie to change a head gasket with repair manual in a 87 tercel?

You'd better plan on an engine shop lined up to check the flatness of the head and re-machining flat if they're not. Throwing a head gasket on a motor doesn't solve the real problem. The cylinder head is the hottest running part of an internal combustion engine other than the tops of the pistons. How hard would it be for a newbie to change a head gasket with repair manual in a 87 tercel?Head Gaskets are no piece of cake especially for a newbie. This is generic advice, not specific to your make %26amp; model.

First you are going to need metric sockets %26amp; wrenches. You will start by tearing everything on top of the engine off so you can gain access to the job. Is this fuel injected or throttle body? Fuel injected will have a whole lot more to remove.

Second, with the top of the engine cleaned off, remove the intake manifold. This is not rocket science, bust pull the bolts that hold it to the head.

Third, remove the bolts that connect the exhaust manifold to the head. On some models they are hard to gain access to, %26amp; they are almost always tighter than a ***** because of the high heat they are continually exposed to.

(This is all sounding easier than it is.)

    Pull your valve covers.

Now you are down to the bolts that go through the head %26amp; hold it to the block. These are big bolts, %26amp; usually have a pretty healthy torque to them. If this is an aluminum block, they won't be torqued as tight as if it was a cast iron block. Still, you are going to want a serious breaker bar at your disposal %26amp; good (not cheap chinese) 6 point sockets.

After that, the head(s) should pop off.

With a scraper, CAREFULLY remove gasket residue from mating surfaces of block %26amp; head.

You should have already had a book -- a Chiltons or Haynes with instructions %26amp; illustrations is fine.

Install gaskets, %26amp; then begin reinstallation in reverse of teardown.

The bolts that hold the head to the block need to be torqued in a specific order. Your book will illustrate the order. Your book will also give you the torque value. Don't settle for %26quot;pretty tight%26quot; with the breaker bar you removed them with. Use a torque wrench. Beg, buy, borrow or steal.

How bad is your head gasket leaking?

If it is just seepuing a bit into the combustion chamber, I don't care what anyone says, I'd soon as take a chance with a tube of alumasea in the rad as opposed to putting myself through this job or dropping 1000$ plus to have it done downtown.

Good luck. How hard would it be for a newbie to change a head gasket with repair manual in a 87 tercel?Fairly difficult, but if you concentrate and follow the manual carefully you should be fine. Make sure you have a tension wrench to tension the head bolts, and feeler gauges and straight edge to check any warp or hollows in the head as specified in the repair manual. It is a fairly big job though.

If you have a a leaking head gasket that isn't too bad, you could try a chemical sealer to keep you going.

I've used this metallic seal-up head gasket sealer quite a few times with good results that last for years. You'll find it at your auto parts store. Also follow the instructions closely.

It's a heap less work and cost than a head gasket change. I'm well versed in changing head gaskets and I use this seal up in preference.

In a garage you would be looking at around the 500 mark because they will probably insist on a new timing belt kit, maybe more if they insist on changing the bearing ladder, which is sometimes included as part of the kit, and to facilitate this, the sump has to be removed.

http://www.autozone.com/repair_info.htmHow to change head gaskets on a 91 camaro 305?buy a chilton or haynes manual at almost any parts store. detailed pics and part by part dissassembly. How to change head gaskets on a 91 camaro 305?shove it up ur grandma's bunkerHow to change head gaskets on a 91 camaro 305?I would carry it to a reputable mechanic, because you will probably have to have the heads surfaced before you put them back on. You should also check the heads for warpage and cracks. A mechanic can perform all of this and do it in less time and do it right. Find one that will guarantee his work. Also have the mechanic check your entire cooling system, including the fans. How to change head gaskets on a 91 camaro 305?305 chevy engines were notorious for cracking the heads so there is a good chance that the heads will be cracked when you get them off. you might not even be able to see the cracks. they crack right next to the intake valve. I would make sure to send the heads and have the magnifluxed before reassembly. also it takes a couple of kind of special tools so it would be best done by a qualified technician. How to change head gaskets on a 91 camaro 305?its actualy quite simple, first make sure you have good tools and clean work area, start by removing the air cleaner assembly, next remove the gas line and throttle cable, next remove the distributor ther is 1 bolt that holds it down remember to label the wires with the corect #, next remove the intake ther should be 6 bolts on each side, next remove the valve covers, unbolt the roccer arms, pill out the push rods MAKE SURE to label them in the EXACT order removed, un bolt the head remove old gasket, install in the revers order, you'll have to keep the valve covers loose as to ajust the rocker arms as needed, you'll also want to time it up. good luck it's quite simple just follow the steps, if you want more detail then buy a haynes or chilton repair manuel, or find a friend that knows how and is willing to help,

How hard is it to change a head gasket on a 1.2 corsa swing ?

Hi i have a 1994 vauxhall corsa swing. Its a 1.2 4 cylinder engine. I believe that my head gasket has either gone or is about to go. The symptons are:

white smoke from exhaust but only on certain days

    poor acceleration

when i removed the oil cap there was a white milky substance.

I am gutted about this as it is my first car and havent actually drove it on my own yet.

I have slight mechanical knowlege and as i am out of work i cannot afford to pay labour costs which i have heard are around 450. Therefore as it would cost more to repair the car than i bought it. I thought that i would attempt to change the gasket myself. Is it easy ? How do i go about timing the cams and that ?. Thanks DecHow hard is it to change a head gasket on a 1.2 corsa swing ?Not being rude, but if you're not even sure if you have an 8v or 16v engine, do not attempt this yourself. It will be the 8v engine as the 1.4 and 1.6 were the only 16v engines in the Corsa until the chain driven X12XE came out.

You would need a head gasket set, 10 head bolts, thermostat, cambelt/tensioner, sealant for joint between rocker box and head, antifreeze, oil and filter. It's also advisable to have the head skimmed at the same time. Please don't try it if you're not sure because it is a big job and will be more expensive if it goes wrong.

Have you tried a smaller garage, these will have a more reasonable labour rate? How hard is it to change a head gasket on a 1.2 corsa swing ?It depends if you no what you doing or not, If you not done this type of thing before then dont atempt it as you need to have the head tested and make sure it at top dead centre and timing is correctHow hard is it to change a head gasket on a 1.2 corsa swing ?you would need a head gasket, head re-skimmed, full engine flush including all pipes and also your best of replacing the cambelt and water pump. if your doing it yourself then i would say about 150 or find yourself a re-con engine. How hard is it to change a head gasket on a 1.2 corsa swing ?you can have all the manuals you like , you still need the skill and/or experience .How hard is it to change a head gasket on a 1.2 corsa swing ?a big job to do even if one knows how so best you pay to have it doneHow hard is it to change a head gasket on a 1.2 corsa swing ?not hard.just get the torque wrench settingsHow hard is it to change a head gasket on a 1.2 corsa swing ?If it's the 16 valve fuel injection engine then I suggest that you don't try. There's a good reason why the labour costs are that high, basically because it's over complicated and will be a difficult job. That does sound like a head gasket or a cracked head problem. If it's been driven like that for a while the whole engine may be ruined, due to the poor condition of the oil - emulsified oil isn't a good lubricant. Whatever the case, it'll have to be dismantled before you will know more. It may be much easier to sell it and buy another car. Basically, if you have to ask this question then you don't have the experience to do the job without a lot of difficulty.

Edit: It's difficult to be sure what you'll need to replace until you've stripped the engine. Your best bet may be to get your apprentice mechanic friend to help you, he may help you cheaply/as a favour and will benefit from the experience. Of course, however, he's also more likely to make a mistake. If you can get another engine (a good one) for under 250 (or even 100) then replace the engine, it's probably much easier that way (I'd do this if it was mine). Examine the clutch at the same time too while it's apart. You should have it done in a day with your friends help. Don't forget to send your log book back to the DVLA with your new engine number on it. If it's an OHV (overhead valve - push rods) engine then taking the head off is a very simple job but it's probably an OHC (overhead cam - timing belt/chain to top of engine) engine. The 16 valve one may even be a twin cam, not good for a beginner. Remember, it's a fifteen year old car so don't spend a fortune on it - don't spend anything unless you're sure of success, another good working engine will give you that certainty. How hard is it to change a head gasket on a 1.2 corsa swing ?If you are genuinely going to attempt the job yourself you need a Haynes Manual. It is absolutely essential that you follow procedure with a head gasket renewal. You will also need a torque wrench covering the stipulated ranges. The Manual will give you all the info you need, including setting up the timing gear and applying the correct torque to the head bolts. None of it is particularly difficult, but you need to be focussed and methodical. There are no shortcuts or tips, just read and do. If you are impatient or in a hurry you will balls it up.

If the surfaces of the head are cracked or burned you need an exchange head. If there is damage to the engine block face, expense is inevitable as the engine will have to come out, or you bodge it and sell. Good luck.

    I need to change a head gasket on a ford f 150 4.2l engine?

does anyone know torque specs or where i can find out how to change it , with specific specs ???I need to change a head gasket on a ford f 150 4.2l engine?BEFORE you %26quot;jump the gun%26quot; and replace the head gaskets, how sure are you that they have failed. For your information, the lower intake gaskets on these particular engines are pretty common to fail, and produce similar symptoms to a head gasket failure. The 4.2L V6 is from the same engine family as the 3.8L V6 engine that you find under the hoods of many Windstars. The intake gaskets on this particular vehicle is made from plastic, which typically fall apart at the coolant passages, allowing coolant to mix engine oil. If this is your problem, I would go as far as pulling off the lower intake manifold first, and examine the intake gaskets to check for the damage that I've described. The replacement gaskets from Ford are thicker. With that said, care must be taken NOT to strip all the 8mm bolts which secure the lower intake to the heads, due to all the bolt holes not lining up without persuasion. Hope this helps. If you require more information, you can e-mail me.I need to change a head gasket on a ford f 150 4.2l engine?Go to your nearest parts store and buy a Chiltons or Clymers service manual for your make and model. • I am changing the head gasket on a cavalier and?

Yes, I am a chic who usually kicks butt on working on cars but not this time...

I threw all of the push rods into a bucket of gas to clean them. I felt kind of stupid immediately...knowing that in an 89 cavalier those push rods have been wearing in the same spots for many many years. This is the 2nd time I have changed the gasket (first time I needed a new head too---blah) and the last time I had the good sense to keep the push rods and rocker arms together. Anyway, how big of a deal is this really? My concern is the motor being noisy or of course having engine trouble..but how much trouble could I anticipate?I am changing the head gasket on a cavalier and?Well hon, when disassembling an engine you have to place the parts on a order. Some parts can be reused like push rods. A quick inspection will tell you. The worst part is, did you marked them at least? It might be ok but the they have wear patterns and mixing them up and place them back on the wrong spots could cause premature wear.

Cleaning with Gasoline is not recommended (actually Gasoline was invented as a solvent). But it will not blow up your engine. Way back in the earlier days of Aviation, there was such thing as a Dilution System that dumped some fuel in the crank case of an Aircraft Piston Engine to make the oil thiner when the engine stopped in freezing temps. Once the engine cranked the fuel will evaporate due to the heat. Some times caught on fire... is not longer in use that system ;-)

The point is, that you need a good amount of fuel to happen, a part with some residue of Gasoline will not blow up. 1st you need oxygen and number too, the oil rushing through it will clean it on the spot.I am changing the head gasket on a cavalier and?Rods are pretty cheap. Buy new ones - all perfectly the same - problem solved.

But first, I'd try the old ones - they may be just fine....

ps: don't use gas to clean with... it goes boomI am changing the head gasket on a cavalier and?you can tell witch way is up by the push rod guide wear. then inspect balls for chiping or wear . dont see any damage, i would reuse. new push rods are only 2-3 dollars a piece, if you have damaged ones. good luckI am changing the head gasket on a cavalier and?You wont have a problem at all. The difference in the length of the rods is not even worth talking about. As long as none of them are bent, just whack them back in and let the automatic adjustment of the hydraulic cam followers take care of any differences.I am changing the head gasket on a cavalier and?by mixing up push-rods the worst that can happen is that you will have to go back and adjust again later, length is important! rule of thumb is longer push-rod goes with longer rocker. if you think they are bad look at the center hole if there is a noticeable difference from smallest to biggest then replace them as far as top and bottom they are the same, and in case your curious I've been building performance engines for over 12yrsI am changing the head gasket on a cavalier and?there shouldnt be any trouble just check them to see if any are bent

%26quot;You have to start by draining the coolant from the radiator into a container as you can reuse it. And then you have to disconnect the positive terminal of the battery. After that you have to remove the serpentine belt.

    Follow the following steps:

    Above car:

1, Remove alternator and brackets from engine. DO NOT DISCONNECT THE WIRES. Place alternator out of the way.

2, Unbolt and remove the power steering pump. DO NOT REMOVE THE HIGH PRESSURE LINES. Place Power steering pump out of the way. Remove Intake manifold to power steering support bracket.

3, Disconnect Tv cable and throttle cable from throttle body (ie the carburator)

4, Remove valve cover and disconnect all vaccum and sensor lines from the top of engine that may be attached to the head or intake manifold.

5, Loosen all rocker arm nuts and remove the pushrods from the engine. KEEP THE PUSHRODS IN THE ORDER THAT YOU REMOVED THEM.

6, Starting with the outside bolts loosen all the head bolts but do not remove them

    UNDER THE CAR:

1, Unbolt the exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold bolts. Seperate and support the Exhaust.

FINAL STEP: Remove all the head bolts and remove the head from the car.

From there you Should be able to figure it all out. %26quot;How to change a head gasket on a 1996 chevy corsica? step by step??How to change a head gasket on a 1996 chevy corsica? step by step?Step by Step

Replacing a head gasket is not a DIY job, unless you have plenty of experience, knowledge, and the proper tools. The fact that you would even ask, %26quot;How to replace a head gasket%26quot;, would indicate to some that you should not be trying to do that repair.

To replace a head gasket you must remove the intake manifold, exhaust manifold, valve train, and then the head. This is very involved and requires disconnecting lots of sensors and the ignition system. The head must then be checked to see if it is warped, or cracked, and repaired if necessary. You must then know how to put all this back together and torque all the bolts in the proper sequence. This takes training and skill which the average shade tree mechanic does not have.

There is a difference between say a over head cam (OHC) engine and a internal cam engine. And then if it is a V6 or V8 then both head gaskets must be replaced even if only one blew. And last but not least, you have to find out if there is other engine damage and what caused it to blow the gasket in the first place. Definitely not for an amateur.

The best answer to this question: Take it to a professional.

The second-best answer: Get a repair manual and follow directions. A repair manual does not provide the training necessary to do this repair correctly, and not near enough information, but it can provide more info than can be written out in an answer like this.

Below is the best answer we can provide in this format.

    Parts

    Exhaust flange nuts and bolts

    Head Gasket (preferably OEM)

    Ten head bolts

    Two valve cover end seals

    Tube of RTV silicone

    Disassembly

    1. Disconnect the battery negative terminal

    2. Drain the cooling system

    3. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it with jack stands .

    4. Remove the two 13mm exhaust bolts holding the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold, lower the vehicle

    5. Remove the air cleaner assembly

    6. Remove the upper radiator hose

    7. Loosen the 13mm nut holding the dipstick tube bracket to the thermostat housing and remove the coil (if it is attached to the thermostat housing) and unplug the coolant temperature sensor

    8. Remove the spark plug wires from the plugs, remove the distributor water shield and the distributor cap (this step is so you don't damage the distributor cap).

    9. Remove the two uppermost 15mm-head bolts from the top of the a/c , alternator bracket where it attaches to the head and unplug the single wire temperature sending unit

    10. Remove the upper half of the timing belt cover

    11. Remove the valve cover

    12. Disconnect the wiring harness connector that is just to the right of the throttle body

    13. Disconnect the throttle cables from the throttle body and remove the two 10mm head bolts holding the bracket

    14. Disconnect the vacuum lines from the throttle body

    15. Disconnect the fuel lines - NOTE : The fuel lines may be under pressure , use extreme care when removing them

    16. Disconnect the throttle position sensor connector and the EGR valve connector (if equipped)

    17. Carefully lift up the throttle body wiring harness , the fuel lines , and the vacuum lines together and use a bungee cord to hold them out of the way

    18. Remove the ground strap that is attached to the intake manifold from the fire wall

    19. Remove the 15mm-head bolt holding the battery ground cable to the engine

    20. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the power brake booster and the heater hose from the intake manifold left side

    21. Use two plastic tie straps to secure the timing belt to the camshaft pulley and remove the pulley . Hold upward tension on the pulley and secure it with a bungee cord to the right hood hinge - NOTE: be sure to hold the upward tension with the bungee cord so the timing belt doesn't jump a tooth on the lower pulleys

    22. Remove the head bolts and lift the head off the engine block . (I suggest having an assistant help to lift off the head) With the head removed , carefully check the head casting for signs of cracks. Also use a straight edge to check the head casting for warpage (maximum allowable warpage is .00

    23. Clean all the head gasket mating surfaces and wipe clean with a little brake cleaner on a rag. Use a round plastic bristled brush to clean out the head bolt holes in the engine block and blow them out with compressed air .

    Reassembly

    1. After the gasket surfaces are prepared, set the new head gasket in place and CAREFULLY place the head into position, take extreme care not to place the head on the head gasket until it is in the proper position.

    2. With the head in place, install the head bolts. You will need to tighten the head bolts in a circular pattern starting from the center and working your way out. I recommend hand tightening all the bolts before beginning the torque sequence. Head bolt torque: For older style 10mm head bolts : 35 - 45 - 45 - and a 1/4 turn; For newer style 11mm head bolts : 45 - 65 - 65 - and a 1/4 turn

    3. Use the two rubber valve cover end seals and a bead of RTV silicone to reseal the valve cover.

    4. Do Not let the silicone skin-over before setting the valve cover into place and tightening the bolts, also be sure that both mating surfaces of the valve cover are clean and oil free .

    5. After the head is reassembled you will need to reset the base timing to specs. You will also want to double check the timing belt position . Use a variable timing light and set the timing mark on zero degrees . Save the setting on the timing light and shine it through the inspection hole in the top of the upper timing belt cover . If the belt timing is correct , you will see the oblong hole in the camshaft sprocket centered in the inspection hole .How to change a head gasket on a 1996 chevy corsica? step by step?try this.... www.2carpros.com/makes/chevy/corsica.htm maby that can helpHow to change a head gasket on a 1996 chevy corsica? step by step? You got to be kidding, step by step? How hard is it to change head gaskets on a v6 4runner 90-96??

Ive done it on plenty of 4cylinders but never a v6 and never a truck is it a real pain in the a$s? something that I can do in a few hours? do the heads typically need machining? is there anything tricky to look out for? are they timing chain or belt?

most info with experience doing this job to answer and Ill give you best answer no prob.

thanks in advanceHow hard is it to change head gaskets on a v6 4runner 90-96??There's a timing chain and it's not too bad but harder then the 4 because there is two sides to a v6. So literally twice as hard. Most of the time you can get away without machining the heads but it really depends on the mileage/how hard they were driven/climate matters too because cold driving tends to warp them. I've also heard it said that if they didn't need to be machined they wouldn't have blown the gasket. Kinda makes sense I guess. I'd say that if you did it alone with a proper garage it could be done in either one really long day or two to three days of 3-4 hours a day. I'd go to the local auto parts store and get a haynes manuel it will walk you through each step with pictures and hints and trouble shooting guide. All for only $20.
