Is it hard to change the head gasket on a 95' Honda Civic dx.

The head gasket is bad in my Honda and we just got the parts today and we were gonna change it this coming up weekend. My boyfriend and his dad are pretty good with cars but Im still kinda iffy about letting them change it. Is it easy to change and I should trust them to do it or is it hard and should be taking to a shop to get changed?!

if anyone knows like all the steps on how to change it as well, then that would be nice to know too :]]] Thanks!

p.s.

The full make and everything of it is a 1995 Honda Civic dx. 1.5 sohc.Is it hard to change the head gasket on a 95' Honda Civic dx.Not too hard as long as they are somewhat mechanically inclined.

Be sure to torque in accordance to the manual.

Verify timing belt timing over and over before reassembly.

Do not keep nuts and bolts anywhere near the timing belt area if the top cover is removed - I dropped a bolt into mine.

Easy tip: unbolt and leave the intake manifold IN PLACE. this will save a bit of time disconnecting and reconnecting everything on it.

Replace water pump, cam seal, timing belt along with headgasket.

If over 200k, replace front crank seal too.

Get the FULL headgasket kit that includes valve stem seals and other gaskets. Stem seals are a common wear item on the Hondas and replaceing them now will save a future repair.

After all said and done, you should have a motor good for another 150k miles.

Note: WHY is the headgasket bad? If it overheated, you probably have a warped cylinder head that will need to be machined back down. This can cost $100-200.Is it hard to change the head gasket on a 95' Honda Civic dx.they should have no problem, the only time personally i think when head gaskets suck to install is on v6's and v8's because they're harder to get to, on the civic's, accord's, integra's, etc.. it's simple just make sure when they go to put everything back together, especially the head and valve cover that they don't overtighten the bolts, me and my ricer buddies have snapped quite a few valve cover bolts because they seem to be so brittle. but as far as your question goes, don't worry about them messing up, if they really do know basic mechanic skills. if not, then stay away.

  • How difficult is it to change a head gasket on a 2.8 V6 engine?

Is this a front wheel car or rear wheel? If its front wheel drive and the engine is sideways, its a bit more difficult to get at things. It is a pretty big job. You have to remove the intake and exhaust manifolds before you can remove the heads. This job is almost all labor and very little cost for parts. So if your handy you can save a lot of money doing it yourself. I would get a shop manual, I like the Haynes ones the best and then read all the steps for this job and make sure your are comfortable with it before starting it. It took me all weekend to do mine.

I want to change 95celica head gasket.send me a website to show how to change a gasket?

found a good one. not on a celica but same thing. %26quot;DIY network%26quot; . type in diy, and when you get there click on the auto tab. it will show autos and boats. under the engine catagory click engine maint. then it will show cylinder head service-disasembly . on the list it is the 5th one from the bottom. has pictures and descriptions on what to do. hope this helps.

Head gasket change on 97 mustang?

A friend of mine has a 1997 mustang gt with a 4.6 dohc and it needs a head gasket. About how much will this cost to fix? also would it be cheaper just to put in a used engine? and also, do you have to pull the engine to remove the heads on these cars?Head gasket change on 97 mustang?ok lets slow down here. it would be very impractical and most likely not cost effective to swap the engine out of this mustang even if you have the motor already. Changing the heads on this car would require the following:

    the new head gasket

    a tourque wrench

the ford manual for the car from that year or the same information which can be found at

    http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/shop_p

You really do not need to be tech savy to do this change, all you need is the ability to follow strict instructions, assuming you are planning to do this yourself and not through a shop because a shop will charge you an obscene amount to do this most likely. The price could be as much as $800 or more because of the labor time that the factory allows for this maint. on %26quot;flat rate%26quot; pay.

If you would like a more step by step approach i would be happy to detail it out for you. This should be all you need to get started though.

after reading it seems i left something out, you shouldnt have to pull the motor to do the heads, only pull parts of the top end which really isnt anything more then taking out the head bolts, becareful though!!!! IMPORTANT READ THIS!!!! the head bolts are most likely Tourque to Yeild bolts which means they have been torqued to their maxium limit once and cannot be reused, if you try to reuse them you will break them off in teh ehads and end up trying to fix a big mess drilling them out.Head gasket change on 97 mustang?swap the motor if you can you may be able to find one for less than the repairs of the head gasket the heads will have to bet tested at a machine shop 100 bucks and up if they are fine but if not about 200 for new ones or 100 for used ones then the labor for doing it could run you 1200 i would swap it. in any car i have blown a head in which it has been every ford i have owned i swap the motor until i get rid of it been a mechanic for 20 yearsHead gasket change on 97 mustang?Whats wrong with head gasket and how did it get that way? Depends on where you live but it could be done for about $500. Used engine not a good answer.

OK swapping motor can run you into ALOT more trouble. You could end up with the same thing 6mos to a year down the road. Bottom line is why does it need a head gasket?Head gasket change on 97 mustang?i think the problem isnt the head gasket, its the fact that its a ford. ya see, mustangs ((along with any ford product ever made)are not only complete garbage) but are like tampons every pus$y has one. hope that helps .

How do i change a head gasket on an '85 monte carlo ss with a 305?

i know the basic theory behind it. take off the carb, intake, heads etc, replace gasket, put back together. what i need to know is the specifications. is there anything specific to worry about? am i going to mess up my timing if i put the distributor in wrong? do i need to get the heads decked? is there any other special conditions i should know about? thanks! How do i change a head gasket on an '85 monte carlo ss with a 305?the heads shouldnt need to be decked, unless of course they are warped. as for the timing, mark the number one plug wire on the cap before taking apart, and make sure to bring the number one cylinder to top dead center before taking apart as well. get a chilton book, you can get at any parts store. tons of info in them. the 305 is one of the easiest to do heads on, or any chevy small block for that matter.

How do I figure out what the problem is, how do I fix it, and how do i change a head gasket.?

I have a 1996 acura integra gsr and one of the valves is sticking and i dont want to pay $600 to fix it. I would love to do it myself. Is it best to have a mechanic fix it or is there a way to fix it with me and a friend. Please tell me what the problem most likley would be.How do I figure out what the problem is, how do I fix it, and how do i change a head gasket.?If I take your problem literally, you have one valve sticking in its bore which is called a valve guide. The valve guide is pressed into the head of which I will assume you have a four banger as I don't know of any 6 cylinder Integras. Problems of this nature generally start with people neglecting the oil and driving the car hard... hey it's a GSR right? Loads of fun hitting that VTEC at 5500 rpm!

So now you've got a rough engine and maybe some tapping noises... life sucks in the fast lane sometimes doesn't it? But... what do you do about it? You must have a quote for $600 to state that amount and hopefully, your lesson would be learned... the head would be fixed and you can hit that VTEC with fresh oil this time. Answered... done deal.

    Or...

You can see if you can unstick the valve by cleaning up the inside of that engine. I've heard of racers draining the oil from the engine and refilling it with KEROSENE which is an oil based product. They add one quart more than the system calls for and they DON'T CHANGE THE OIL FILTER. Your engine will have enough oil coating the parts and in the oil filter to supplement the oil based kerosene to protect it from damage while merely idling. Of course you can opt for any number of store bought motor flushes and follow the instructions on the can as well. At least you won't feel like you are hurting anything since some firm is dictating what to do and not some stranger on yahoo answers.

When you are confident the motor is clean, change the oil and filter add some Kreen to the oil (www.kanolabs.com) and run it. You will have to hope and pray that a good internal cleaning will free up your stuck valve and your problem become a thing of the past. Otherwise, you are into some head work.

One of the simplest answers for head work is to bring the head in and swap it for another that has already been rebuilt. You'll have to investigate a source on your own... I just don't have the time right now. The timing belt will have to come off to do it so you might as well replace that as well. disassembling the head to get the valve out is not hard but requires some specialized tools to compress valve springs etc. Changing the head gasket is one of the easier things to do once the head is off but you must make absolutely sure the block surface and the head surface are flat and clean. Otherwise, you will simply blow the head gasket not long after finishing such a project. Resurfacing the block or the head takes a machine shop... good luck getting the engine block to the machine shop with the head off.

If you do decide to fix it yourself, you will need to buy the service manual from www.helminc.com before you start and you will need to know which valve is causing your problem. For that, you will need to do a compression check... the problem cylinder should show up with lower compression than the others.

If it were me, I would do the cleaning routine and start saving my money for $600 to let a pro handle the job... a cheap alternative in the long or even in the short run.

Good luck! How do I figure out what the problem is, how do I fix it, and how do i change a head gasket.?Honda engines are made with very small tolerances (especially valves %26amp; cylinder heads), which helps in the performance, but makes working on it more critical

do yourself a favor and have an expert do it; you could do it, but if you screw it up, it'll cost much more than $600How do I figure out what the problem is, how do I fix it, and how do i change a head gasket.?How do you know a valve is sticking?

Changing a head gasket isn't that bad, if you have done work like this before. Is this a 4 banger or V6? The four will be much easier.

This would be a good time to change the timing belt and the water pump, if it's got a lot of miles on it.

I am living in Germany so I don't know that much about the stuff. How do I figure out what the problem is, how do I fix it, and how do i change a head gasket.?Don't try this one at home. Which will cost you up to twice as much to fix your own mistake. How do I figure out what the problem is, how do I fix it, and how do i change a head gasket.?if you have the time and the proper space, tools and money, do it with your buddy.go to a honda/acura dealership, buy a shop manual(the ones the techs use) and have funHow do I figure out what the problem is, how do I fix it, and how do i change a head gasket.?you MAYBE able to take the valve cover off and just bump the engen over and see what valve is sticking if it is possible to free it up by TAPPING not hammering on it then you know its not sezed up but if its sezed up the timing will eventualy get messed up is it a VTEC?

Anyone can change a head gasket, but there is a method to the madness of tightening head bolts and loosening them. They must be tightened and loosened in order and it must be right. Other than taking everything off and putting it back in the right place there's not much to it. Cleanliness is the key issue with the head gasket. Make sure you take your old head to the machine shop so they can check for head warpage. Can you give step by step instructions on how to change a head gasket for a 1999 buick century?if your going to do it yourself, your looking at alot of work ahead of you, but if you have the right tools and knowledge, you can do it.but make sure after you get the head off, take it to a machine shop so they can check it out for warpage and cracks. by the way, you dont have to adjust the valves, they are non adjustable. just put the lifter on the low cam, all the weay down and torque the nut.

So how much it is to have replaced the Valve Stem Seal , when doing this can you also change the head gasket?

So how much it is to have replaced the Valve Stem Seal at a local repair shop , when doing this can you also change the head gasket or it is a different job?So how much it is to have replaced the Valve Stem Seal , when doing this can you also change the head gasket?the valve stem seals can be done without removing the head if you go in to changing a head gasket that turns out to be a totally different job,you can do both jobs once the head is removed, but on just doing valve stem seals you can easily do it without removing the head, good luck.So how much it is to have replaced the Valve Stem Seal , when doing this can you also change the head gasket?Stem seals are above the head-gaskets, but can be combined with them as the heads must be removed for cleaning and replacement of the gaskets. I suggest you have the valves done as well as your already torn down.So how much it is to have replaced the Valve Stem Seal , when doing this can you also change the head gasket?I have never done one before myself, but this is because i was at a dealership and if we had a problem like that come in it normally was cheaper to replace the whole motor.

Try high mileage oil. A lot of the time they can recondition the seals well enough to stop a leak for you. I love Castrol GTX High Mileage, but its your call.So how much it is to have replaced the Valve Stem Seal , when doing this can you also change the head gasket? You should be able to get the seals %26amp; head gasket changed for about 5 or 6 hours labour depending on the vehicle. Garage prices vary but about 45 per hour would be a general price but main dealer prices are around double this. If you are going to all the trouble of a new gasket %26amp; seals I would advise a new timing belt if the vehicle has one. Good luck hope this helps.

How do you change the head gasket on a 1993 Camaro 3.2 V6.?

I think my car has a blown head gasket. Is it possible to fix it myself or how much is this goin to cost me? For parts and labor? How do you change the head gasket on a 1993 Camaro 3.2 V6.?If you are going to do it yourself the first thing for you to do is to get yourself a Haynes or Chilton Repair Manual for the year and type of vehicle that you have. The process can be little more involved and costly then what you are prepared for. I was and still am in the same situation with my 1994 ford F150 pickup truck. If you do the repair yourself you will gain valuable knowledge of motor vehicle repair. If you have a mechanic do it they will charge you between $900. (on the low end) to $1800. or more (on the high end), but around that price range. You might just consider getting for yourself another vehicle that is a little bit newer and with less miles on it. P.S. The very best thing that you can do for any vehicle is to keep all of the fluids checked and changed especially the oil, keep the oil changed every 2,500 to 3,000 miles that you drive, use a quality grade oil and make sure that you are using the right grade. I can explain to you in detail why keeping the oil changed is so important and what grades mean (ex: 5W30) if you want. or you can just take my word for it.How do you change the head gasket on a 1993 Camaro 3.2 V6.?expensive. you have to take the engine completly apart to change it. so up to you.How do you change the head gasket on a 1993 Camaro 3.2 V6.?It sounds as if you don't have a clue. Label EVERYTHING, all the hoses, wires that you unplug. Here's a big tip: when you have to unbolt the exhaust manifold, which is practically impossible to do, instead try this: cut off the exhaust pipe instead, ahead of the cat, and short enough so you can still pull the head out of the engine, leaving the exhaust manifolds intact. Then when you put it back go to the auto parts store and buy a muffler adapter to fit the two pieces of the exhaust pipe back together again. I tell you this, cause that is the hardest part of the job. But close to difficulty is the removal of the timing chain/belt. make SURE you get it back EXACTLY the way it came apart. Buy some white touch up paint, and mark all the gears and teeth, etc. of the timing belt and gears. And it's STILL hard to get the timing belt off!

You will DEFINANTLY need an auto repair manual to do this; just follow the steps carefully. It will take you a few days, so be organized.

This is NOT an easy job, but you can still probably do it. Just take my advice on the exhaust and timing chain. And don't give up.

Note: Don't bother %26quot;milling%26quot; the head, it don't need it anyway, unless it's really warped. And it probably isn't. But do buy a book, with pictures in it. And study it in advance, so you know what you're getting yourself into. But do buy the new head bolts. The torque specifications and order of tightening will be in the book. If not, look them up, you have to have them.

I don't agree with the guy above: I tell you, this is a BIG, MAJOR job, and you better have some experience with cars, not just with plumbing as it's not the same thing. How easy is it to change a head gasket on a car?Well, you have to take all the things off that are connected or are in the way, that is a chore. Then you can take the head or heads off. There are lots of bolts. You obviously need ratchet wrench, a scraping tool, a torque wrench, when it goes back on it needs to be at the right torque value range. Other than that, go for it.How easy is it to change a head gasket on a car?Not easy. Even if you get the parts back together right, tightening the bolts down properly is an art form. Especially on aluminum heads. You'll also need a killer straight edge to check the heads for warpage. The gasket blew for a reason. If you don't find out why the next one might not do any better. You need to know how to inspect the valve train while you have it apart, look at ring gaps to get a rough idea of cylinder wear, and get welded titanium class gasket material off the head and block without scratching anything.

It's a good project on an older car that won't get you divorced if you mess it up.

If you are using a lot of oil and there is oil buildup around the head of the engine, then you may need a new gasket. How old is the car and how many kilometres? If it's still on warranty, then take it to the dealer. Otherwise, I would suggest getting a trustworthy opinion from the garage.

How hard is it to change a head gasket on a 96 grand prix?

And about how much time does it take? How hard is it to change a head gasket on a 96 grand prix?A head gasket is a major repair job. You'll be disassembling the entire top part of the engine to replace the head gasket.

Various instructions on how to perform the task can be found here:

    http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/090

It is highly recommended to take the head with the broken gasket to a machine shop to verify that the head didn't get warped and is not cracked, or you'll be doing the head gasket again.

How hard is it to change a head gasket on a 96 grand prix?its not an easy job ,because you have to have the heads checked to make sure they don't have any warping in them at all,if they do they have to true them up,or they wont hold a new gasket for long,a shop usually charges around 600 to do both heads on those cars, and its well worth it ,it takes a lot of tools and time to do this job, this is not something that the average home mechanic would want to do,if anything goes wrong, and you have to-do it again the cost is going to double ,as to what a shop would have charged you,so id have this one repaired, its better that way ,you get the car back and all you have to do is drive it,good luck on it.

  • How to change a head gasket?

My mainly question is... Do you have to do any adjustments on the head after removing it? because i don't want to remove it and then not be able to put it back. Can some one give me a link to a video or pictures where they show step by step on how to remove and put back on the head. How to change a head gasket? If you do not know how to do this I would suggest you don't try. Without someone there with you that does. Once the head is removed it needs to be surfaced and valves ground. This has to be done by a machine shop. The surface needs to be set down on flat ground on clean card board then sprayed down with carb spray until reinstalled. The block has to be cleaned very well and free of any contaminants. All head bolts need to be replaced with new bolts very important. When you put it back on there is a certain sequence the bolts will be tightened with a torque wrench. That sequence depends on the year make and model of the vehicle. And is very important that it be followed. Some bolts get oil some get sealant. After they are tight some require to be loosened and then calibrated to a certain degree. There is also a sequence that needs to be followed for the intake as well. Very difficult task if you don't now how to do this. This is a very costly and could cost you more to experiment on it then if you just have someone that does know how to do it right. Gasket set is usually like 120 bucks the machine work is a must and will run anywhere from 100 to 250. And if you crack the head or heads your looking at another 300 to 400 to replace them. Besides that if the car has been hydraulic looked and quit running immediately it may have damaged the engine as well. If you mess up it will cost you more to replace parts then pay someone to do it the second time around. Best bet is to spend the 500 to 1000 to have it done by a professional. This is a job that requires more than just take it apart put it back together knowledge. Hope this will help feel free to leave feedback thanks. How to change a head gasket?Get a Haynes or Chilton manual for whatever make that you are changing the head gasket on. Either way, you'll still have to scrape the old gasket off with a razor blade (carefully). You also might want to use a tap and die kit to clean out the old compound that was used to put the head bolts on with. Your book will tell you specific torque readings for you to tighten your head bolts and will tell you the specific sequence in which to tighten the bolts. How to change a head gasket?Basically you should do the same thing here as when you remove any other gasket, clean the mating surface really well. I always spray down the surface of the head with WD-40, then wipe it vigorously with a scotch brite pad. Put a rag in the cylinder to keep crap going down in there. This should get all the grease, oil, and gasket remnants off it. When reinstalling the gasket, to get a good seal you'll have to torque the head to spec.

Any help will be very much appreciated. How easy is it to change a head gasket on a Rover 820 Turbo (Vitesse)?Mmm

I would suggest that you do get this done professionally if you are not experienced.

The main issue will be the right parts and the right tourqe settings.

If you get this wrong the gasket will not work.

Check out the procedure (or a similar one) in Haynes manual from your local library to see what I mean.

This will specify the parts and procedure.

You may need special tools to do the job.

Allthough these may be a bent screwdriver and a funny shaped spanner they may make the job possible.

Get a couple of quotes for the work if you do get a garage to do it.

I think Nationwide will do a fixed cost priced job if you don't like surprises.

  • Manually change head gasket in 97 saturn sl1?

searching all over the internet in forums and such, i narrowed my problem to a blown head gasket. i've already changed the water pump and the thermostat and its still having problems. there is black soot in the inside walls of the coolant tank and coolant drains really fast. if i let the car sit there running it will be fine but when i start driving it will start to overheat. a little bit of white smoke comes out of the tail pipe also. i'm a do-it-yourselfer and i know a lot of people say that if you have a blown head gasket then you're better off getting another car, but i was thinking if i pick up the haynes manual, i can knock it out in a weekend. my brother is a mechanic but he said that if he fix it it will take him weeks cause he works everyday (including weekends) but if i get the manual then i can fix it myself. how hard would something like this be for someone who is very intermediate with fixing cars but is an expert at following directions? how long would it take me to get to it and put everything back? (not including getting the head checked first)Manually change head gasket in 97 saturn sl1?Be prepared to spend money on another head. How much does it cost to change a head gasket on a 98 blazer s10 6 cyl.?

I loose about a gallon of water after driving for about 25-30 milesI have looked for water leaking but the only place water comes from is the tailpipe. Also I get white smoke for just a short time when I first start the blazer. There is no water in the oil I did check for that. So I think it's the head gasket. How much does it cost to change a head gasket on a 98 blazer s10 6 cyl.?woa hold up it can also be your intake manifold is leaking. I had this problem with 2 vehicles. You have to get under and see if there is any leaking on the bottom of the manifold. Leave the car on and on jack stands and look to see if it leaks down there. You have to be patient but if it is that it'll be the difference between 600 bucks and a 20 dollar gasket. goodluckHow much does it cost to change a head gasket on a 98 blazer s10 6 cyl.?Gaskets will cost you about $50/ea. Labor at a good garage might set you back between $800-1,000. It's still cheaper than a new engine. G'luck. How much does it cost to change a head gasket on a 98 blazer s10 6 cyl.?Could also be a cracked head, or even a crack in the cylinder wall. More than likely it is a gasket tho. Different repair shops charge different rates, but I think about $250 would be about right. How much does it cost to change a head gasket on a 98 blazer s10 6 cyl.?About 100$ for the gsaket and about 900$ for the labour.

It is not a do it yourself job dont try

you have white smoke i that is oil burning

it could be your valve sealsHow much does it cost to change a head gasket on a 98 blazer s10 6 cyl.?I don't think it's the head gasket. If it were, you would have smoke all the time the engine was running. You would also have water and oil mixed. I would be inspecting hoses and the radiator while the engine is running. It takes a little time for enough pressure to build up and force the water out of a small leak or crack. Check the soft plugs too.How much does it cost to change a head gasket on a 98 blazer s10 6 cyl.?the book calls for 8.4 Hours, and the gasket set is $56.99 from Autozone, you'll also need new head bolts which are $28.99 - and there's probably some other miscellaneous gaskets that you'll need to go with it (valve cover, exhaust packing, etc)

Be sure to call around for the best price. How much does it cost to change a head gasket on a 98 blazer s10 6 cyl.?A gallon is alot! Go have a coolant system pressure test they are easy to do and should point out the leak then go from there. Miata HEAD GASKET CHANGE? theres smoke coming from the headers how do i replace it costs?

i think this is whats bad but im not exactly sure an idiot i lent my car to overheated it really bad, ever since smoke just comes out from the exhaust piping around where it comes out of the engine is this the famous %26quot;blown head gasket%26quot;?Miata HEAD GASKET CHANGE? theres smoke coming from the headers how do i replace it costs? If it smoke was coming out the exhaust pipe (after the engine warms up) that was white, I would say yes.

But if it is smoke off the exhaust header, I would say no. It could be spilled oil.

However at least one heater tube runs under this assembly and there is an O-ring at one end that may fail, there is also a heater hose in that area that can develop a leak. The flange that connects these to the water pump is a trick to do as vision in the area is restricted.

If these hoses or fittings have failed you would have the symptoms you describe also.

One more thing that may be a fault is the water pump. The Miata engine does not over heat unless there is a failure some place in the coolant system. A water pump failure can be expected at about 15 years of service or 140 thousand miles (these numbers are based on when mine failed).

Either way it would seem a trip to the shop is in order.Miata HEAD GASKET CHANGE? theres smoke coming from the headers how do i replace it costs? Not necessarily...you could have just warped the header and you are leaking exhaust gases.

You can test for a blown head gasket in a number of ways. 1) you can buy a test kit at Kragen's, Autozone, etc. that tests for combustion gases in the coolant; 2) you can pressure the cooling system with a pump and then pull the spark plugs and look for coolant on the spark plugs.

Either way is a sure fire method.

Don't pull the head unless you have to. You may only need to remove the headers and have them planed to flatness again.Miata HEAD GASKET CHANGE? theres smoke coming from the headers how do i replace it costs? That sounds like it's your exhaust gasket not the head gasket that's leaking,if it was your head gasket, you would be losing compression power and a whistling sound, furthermore if your head gasket was blown because of your engine overheating, the heads would have to be checked for warpage

How hard is it to change the head gasket on a 2004 Toyota Highlander (4 cyl, 2wd)?

I've changed my oil, and changed the exhaust system on a Harley I had, but that's the extent of my mechanical experience. I know it would take a long time, but how hard is it to change the head gasket on a 2004 Toyota Highlander? I have a garage so I could take a week or two if I needed to, spending 3 or 4 hours a day. Is this something I could realistically do? How long would it take, and how hard is it? I've heard it's just time consuming getting everything apart. How hard is it to change the head gasket on a 2004 Toyota Highlander (4 cyl, 2wd)?4 cylinders are very simple to work on. IF you are lucky you can change the head without removing the timing belt or timing chain. ( I usually use a wire or strap to hold the timing gear up and tight when removed from the head.) You probably know somebody that has a little more mechanical experience that can give you some pointers. The Haynes manual is a must. Some Toytoa dealers will copy the Toyota repair pages and torque specs for you if the service manager is nice...

I always am able to remove the 4 cyl head (and inline 6 cyl) with Intake and Exhaust manifold still on, it is heavier but saves a lot of problems with gaskets and bolts.

BE SURE the timing is set for Top Dead Center (firing) for number one cylinder before starting or if something goes wrong it can be a major pain to get timing reset. How hard is it to change the head gasket on a 2004 Toyota Highlander (4 cyl, 2wd)?It's a major pain in the asss if you don't have the right tools.

If it was an old Chevy V-8 I'd say %26quot;go for it%26quot; because you can reach everything with basic tools. But this new fangled crap is a ***** to work on.

That's just my opinion. How hard is it to change the head gasket on a 2004 Toyota Highlander (4 cyl, 2wd)?Well your car is not that old so I guess you have some time to research this. You will need special tools, a good shop manual and a lot of time. I do them in one day (with machining the head) but in your case longer. Check out several garages and compare prices (remember timing belt and if necessary water pump should be added at this time). You might find it better not to touch it.How hard is it to change the head gasket on a 2004 Toyota Highlander (4 cyl, 2wd)?Don't do it yourself if you don't have the experience. Ifyou absolutely must though I would suggest buying a haynes manual at the very least. Don't just start taking stuff apart as there is a sequence for good reasons. Label everything.... If you don't have rethreading or the right drills and a bolt breaks you're screwed anyways. Get more on torque specs than just haynes too cuz they make mistakes sometimes....

How hard is it to change a head gasket?

I suggest if you never did it before , don't try it now. Take it and get it done. Good LuckHow hard is it to change a head gasket?nope not as simple as that. you have to put certain bolts in first, tighten them with a torque wrench and god knows what else. half the time the bolts break off and have to be re-tapped. this is one job i would have a professional mechanic do.How hard is it to change a head gasket?you need to get a shop manual for your specific vehicle and read the ENTIRE process before you start. You will get an idea of what needs to come off and the tools needed. You may want to have your head inspected while it is off to make sure it isn't cracked, warped...

I would also heed others advice about broken and frozen bolts. They can be a real pain. How hard is it to change a head gasket? You might just be simplifying it a wee bit.

Best to get a Haynes service manual or similar repair book, and follow the procedures outlined, and especially the sequence of bolt tightening, also the proper torque must be followed.

A torque wrench is a must.

Depending on the mileage of the vehicle, it might be a good idea to have the valves re surfaced while the head is off.

Since this may be your first time, just be careful and read the step by step instructions, then go for it, everyone that has done this had to start somewhere.,.Good luck. How hard is it to change a head gasket? The new parts will not line up with the existing head, so get a new BMW or spend the money on another car...dont waste investing into the head gasket price and labor costs if applicable.

Doesnt always work when replacing gasket...new gaskets can leak as well. How hard is it to change a head gasket?Heyy, yeahhh...removing the head gasket is piss easy. First you take the Cam Cover off then you remove the gasket - replace it, then bolt it all back up...but remember if you have the user manual for the car, look for torque wrench settings and look under cam cover for the measurements because you need to follow manufactures specifications :)How hard is it to change a head gasket?will need the repair manual for your engine so can have the torque spec.and the bolt tightening sequence, when tightening the heads back down, and the right tools for the job if not already have?and if you have a v6 or v8 will be taking every thing off, down to the block,so basically the top half of the motor.lots of work and time.but if you have the time will save you a few hundred bucks doing it yourself, have done plenty in my day,

Can you change the Head Gasket by yourself or is it a complicated job for the mechanic only? Where is it located on a 89 Accord engine, and what tools would i need if i am doing it by myself?

Also, is the thermostat easy to replace on this car? If so, is it easily accessible within the engine? Where is it located, and what tools do i need for the job?How do you change a head gasket in an 89 Honda Accord LXi? Also how do you change the thermostat on this car?Well I will try to answer the thermostat part. Simply follow the large hose out of the top of the radiator until you get to the engine. There will be a clamp holding the hose onto a metal piece that has two bolts. Remove the clamp and the bolts. The thermostat is underneath and should be easily removed and replaced. Some vehicles have a gasket that is replaced at same time, and should come with the replacement thermostat. Simply reverse the process to install and refill any lost anti-freeze with standard 50/50 mix of antifreeze/water. IF you don't know where the radiator is, this repair is best left to a mechanic.

Unless you have a torque wrench, I would leave the head gasket to a mechanic.

Click on pictures to enlarge, and links in box to right for procedures on Intake Manifold and such. How to change a head gasket on a 1994 chevy k1500 ?Actually a manual will help a lot, but anyway (assuming this is a 350 5.7 tbi) you need to remove the intake manifold, to do this remove the throttle body unit then the distributor (remember to mark it for timing) then undo all the bolts on the manifold and remove. Then take off the valve cover, then loosen all the rocker arms once those are loose remove the head bolts then pop off the head. When you put it back together the timing on that side of the engine will be off and you will need to adjust the rocker arm bolts with it running, do that once you put the intake and tbi unit back on and everything else all back together. Thats about all i can think of but go to autozone or somthing and get a good repair manual it will have step by step instructions and all the torque specs..How to change a head gasket on a 1994 chevy k1500 ?1. Drain the coolant

    2. Remove the air filter ducting

禄禄禄How to change a head gasket on a 1994 chevy k1500 ?Put the k1500 into a place where you have good light and a good place to work. Don't try to do it out here it can get rained on etc.

Look at the engine. Notice there is a lot of stuff in the way of taking the heads off.

Drain the cooling system, and save the coolant in bottles so you can pour it back into the engine

Disconnect the battery and hook it up to a %26quot;float%26quot; charger.

Start at the left rear of the top of the engine and remove and disconnect everything that is in the way of the heads.

Mark everything you take off with a sharpie (permenant balck majic marker) as you take them apart so you can get them back together right. I use adhesive lable tags masking tape is also ok. the long narrow white ones work good. Also get some zip seal sandwich bags and put the nuts and bolts for each thing that comes off in a nice neat bag and label it as to what it was for.

Work your way around the engine to the right.

When everything is our of the way and disconnected take off the valve covers.

Manually crank the engine around until it is at TDC on #1 Cylinder on the firing phnase. This will allow getting the distributor back in the fight place. Mark where the distributor rotor is and remove the distributor. It should be pointing to the #1 plug wire. Take all the plug wires off the plugs and keep the wires all together with the cap.

Next the intake manifold comes off bag the bolts and lable them what they were from.

Cover the area where the intake manifold was with clean cloths to protect the engine from getting any foreign material down there.

Remove the pushrods (label each one so you can put them back exactly where you took them out so you can get them back exactly where each one was. An old cardboard box with holes punched in the flaps makes a good/cheap way to keep them in order (the how is up to you). The cardboard box can also be used to keep the bolt bags and parts together.

Disconnect the exhaust manifold from the exhaust pipes. The nuts will likely be very tight and may strip if you don't use penetrating oil or heat to break the rust.

Back off each of the cap screws that hold the heads on one turn and then crank over the engine with the starter (you must reconnect the battery to do this and disconnect it after you do this step.). This should pop the heads loose from the block so you won't have to pry it/them off.

Finish taking the head cap screws off and remove the heads

Take the heads to a machine shop to pressure test them for cracks and for flatness of surface. I would recommend having them do a valve job on the heads while they have them if you can afford it.

Clean the surface of the block where the head seals of all crud and old gasket material. Acquire a new gasket set called a %26quot;head set%26quot; for your engine by VIN of the truck if it is the stock engine if it is not the stock engine id the engine

Always use the best grade gasket set like the Fel Pro to reinstall. Get the head gasket type which is laminated.

Put everything back on the engine in the reverse order you took it off. Putting the heads back on requires the surfaces to be completely clean of all dirt and crud.

Vacuum all the dirt and crud that may have gotten into the pistons.

You will have to get the manual to get the torque specifications for the proper torque setting for all the bolts that hold everything together. You can probaably check one out of your local library to keep the costs down. The pattern and torque of the bolts is crucial.

Get a good quality torque wrench (Craftsman for example) to set these it's the only way it can be done right. And with this stuff it is either do it right or don't do it.

Once your have the heads on and torqued up you can put the push rods back into the engine. Make sure they are in the little sockets in the top of the lifters-make sure you get each one back where it came out. They each have a wear in pattern that is matched to where ther were. If you put them in the wrong spots there may be premature failure of the push rod or rocker arms.

Take the cloth out of the valley area below where the intake manifold goes, and make sure no dirt has gotten in there. If any has it must be removed. A Vacuum wand works good or a magnet for nuts and bolts.

Put on the intake manifold and make sure the little end gaskets are in the proper place or the engine will leak oil there.

Torque up the intake gasket with the proper torque and pattern by the manual.

Manually turn the engine back to TDC on the #1 cylinder at firing phase. Reinstall the distributor.

reconnect the exhaust manifolds to the exhaust pipes. Use new nuts and hightemperature anti seize compound and it will be easier next time to take them off.

reconnect all the stuff you disconnected around the engine from your tags and the bagged bolts from right to left.in an orderly manner to no miss anything making sure you get it all back together by the numbers or letters.

When everything is back together put the coolant back into the engine and check for leaks.

Reconnect the battery to the cables,

    Check the oil level

Spray a very small burst of starting fulid into the air intake of the engine.

Start the engine; It should start just fine.

Do a normal lube change within the first 100 miles after you finish to get ride of any crud that fell into the engine..

Good luckHow to change a head gasket on a 1994 chevy k1500 ?you will need the manual if for nothing else for the toque sequence of the head bolts and what to torque them down at the same with the intake and exhaust manifoldsHow to change a head gasket on a 1994 chevy k1500 ?if you are that stuburn, that is fine but allot of useful information is found in that book like the torque specification and order along with all of the little steps to get the job done correctly the first time. i haver been working on cars for 25 years and i believe that the book should be looked at like the mechanics bible.

Are you positive it's the head gasket? A common problem on the 3.8liter is the upper mainfold plenium, it warps/pits on the inside due to the old style EGR tube getting too hot causing a coolant leak and sometimes causing tthe engne to hydro lock. How much work is it to change head and head gasket on a 97' Buick LeSabre? At home, someone not every experienced, I'd say 1-3 days to complete the job, depends what tools you have too. And if it's a v6 woo hoo ! it's gonna be funHow much work is it to change head and head gasket on a 97' Buick LeSabre? Any tips?Depends on your ability. Timewise can be from 4 hours to NEVER. (Assuming the head is OK, and you have all the needed parts handy!) I usually change BOTH sides at the same time, because if 1 gasket went, just how good is the other one?

Drain radiator first. NOW would be a good time to renew your antifreeze also.

EVERYTHING connected to the head has to be disconnected and/or removed.

Then the head needs to be removed.

If the problem is a 'blown' gasket, the head may be all right, but check it with a straightedge. If in doubt have a shop check it!

Be sure you have a manual to get the proper sequence with the bolts and proper torque.

How do you change head gaskets in a 1999 dodge neon?

Can any one tell me step by step how to change a head gasket in a 99 dodge neon? The shop said it would cost 800 for the part and labor, so I am trying to find someone else to do it cheaper. and also are the gaskets expensive? How do you change head gaskets in a 1999 dodge neon?the gaskets aren't to expensive but having the head trued back up and tested for cracks is and you also have to replace the head bolts on those cars, the price they gave you wasn't a bad price at all,if you want a step by step ,you need a repair manual or else you,ll mess up and have to do it all over again, there are other shops that will do that one for less, but that price isn't a bad one at all, find an independent shop to do it ,their labor rate is a lot cheaper than other shops are, good luck with it.How do you change head gaskets in a 1999 dodge neon?Pay the $800. The part is maybe worth $5. But getting to it requires taking a lot of your engine apart, and you'll want to make sure that the aluminum hasn't warped if the engine has been getting too hot.

Head gaskets are almost a guaranteed failure on an older Neon. That said, I was told I needed to replace mine, and decided to do it myself. In the end, the problem wasn't the head gasket at all. It probably is, but you might want to get a second opinion too.

How to change head gasket on a engine?

i just bought a 1995 honda civic and the gasket on the car is leaking..what can i do?How to change head gasket on a engine?Jarleen,

Changing a head gasket isn't the biggest pain in the butt to do on an engine, but it ranks right up there with the ones that are.

If you have a blown head gasket, chances are, the car was overheated - perhaps badly. That means the head is slightly warped. It must be carefully machined to an exacting smoothness at a machine shop. When you reinstall the head, you must be meticulously clean. There cannot be a speck of grease - not even a fingerprint of grease on either side of the head or block, or you'll have a bad seal and it will blow again.

A metal gasket is best to use, as are ARP brand studs for new bolts. You must carefully tighten the bolts in an x like pattern, moving around the head until they are all tightened equally by using a torque wrench, down to the specified torque.

This is one of those things that, unless the money doesn't exist, or the car is just not worth it, that I would not hesitate to pay a mechanic for. If you decide to do it, and have never done it before, I highly recommend you find a very knowledgible (sp?) friend to help you through it.

-KevinHow to change head gasket on a engine?Changing a cylinder head gasket is a major engine repair that requires specialized tools and expertise to do correctly. The clyinder head and engine block should be thoroughly inspected for warping and heat related damage such as cracks and metal failure.

The engine should be reassembled using the manufacturer's procedures, sometimes an angle gauge is used instead of a torque wrench. Some manufacturers use bolts which must be replaced each time they are used. Some manufacturer's use studs that are installed in the engine block and if overheated they may fail or come loose from the aluminum block. These are just a few of the things that a person would have to know before attempting the repair job.

Take the vehicle to someone that knows the correct procedures. How to change head gasket on a engine? If you are mechanically inclined you can purchase a repair manual from any auto parts store and do it yourself. How do I change head gasket on 1989 yamaha 125cc dirt bike?

I just got this dirt bike and the boy changed the head gasket and he ran it and he then noticed it was not running right. So this should mean it is a blown head gasket correct? Also does it running rough mean the head gasket is blown? How do I change head gasket on 1989 yamaha 125cc dirt bike? Why did he change the head gasket in the first place?

That engine is water cooled - if the head gasket was blown, it would leak coolant out of the cylinder, or the compression of the engine would be blown into the cooling system and blow the coolant out of the radiator cap.

The head gasket is the least of your worries.

Bad gas or incorrect premix ratio.

    Dirty air cleaner.

    Dirty carb.

Worn out top end (cylinder, piston %26amp; rings). How do I change head gasket on 1989 yamaha 125cc dirt bike?man, so many answers to this question.

First, do you have the tools and skill to do the job. Have you ever removed the heads on a bike before. Do you have the equipment to determine if the head is actually warped now or not, and the machinery to fix it if it is? Do you have the shop service manual on the bike so you know what all the correct torque settings are for the head bolts.

Do you know how to set the timing and what the specs should be when you get the heads back on. Do you know how to adjust the valves.

Bottom line, could the problem your having now be the heads? Yes, it could also be any one of a dozen other things as well after having the heads removed. If the guy THINKS he might have over tightened then that tells me he didn't use a torque wrench or go by the specs, which means he probably didn't go by the specs for anything else.

If this is a bike you really want to ride, take it to a shop and let them figure it out, you can permanently mess it up if you don't even have the basics like the shop manual and proper tools, to say nothing of the skills.
