How bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket?

I have a 98 Camry with over 220k miles and it still runs runs strong. I've never had any major repairs to it, other than the routine breaks, timing belt, tune up etc. However, I recently got my oil changed and the guy said I have a leak or a crack on the seal of my head gasket. He said it was small, but can get bad.

I have been smelling more burnt oil coming from my hood lately, so I'm assuming it's from the leak. I'm going to buy a new car soon so I don't want to put much money into this car if I don't have to.

So with that said, about how much would it cost to repair it and about how long do I have if I don't repair it before it completely ruins my engine? Thanks guysHow bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket?if they told you that at a jiffy lube i would guess that you have valve cover gasket leaking not head gasket as i dont know how they would know head gasket is leaking but could visually determine a valve cover gasket that would leak oil on the engine pretty simple to repair or tighten head gaskets are a whole other story just had head gaskets replaced under warrenty on 06 f-350 6200 dollars had to jack cab of truck up just to get to themHow bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket? We'll if you dont want to put much money into the car then your best bet is to just hurry up and buy something else..a head gasket could go as much as 800 or more in a shop to have replaced and if they find the head itself is cracked u can double or tripple that...sry for the bad news..How bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket?Bad your anti freeze will start pouring out after you shut it off and if you check your oil you will find that its mixed. If you take off your oil cap look inside the cap you will find white creamy stuff inside the cap this is a sign of head gaskets.I paid about 550 for mine to be done. How bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket?Leave it alone, dont put money into something you are going to get rid of in due time and it sounds like you are going to do this very soon, it sounds as though it is simply an oil gally that is leaking probably on the corner of the cylinder head. You need to watch the oil in it, so you dont run the riisk of blowing the motor because you ran it dry from oil lacking. I the past i have taken the cylinder head and tightened it a few more poubds of tourque to seal the gasket temporarily you could try this or throw in some bg stop oil leak. But camrys are good cars drive it till you trade it, and my recommendation would be to get another toyota product they are well, worth the monetyHow bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket? The problem is the same as trying to know the day you die -- you don't know. If the leak gets worse and water pours into your oil (creating a non-lubricating emulsion), there goes your engine -- or at least some or all the piston-rod bearings in the crank case.

So, how much will your present car be worth as a trade-in without an engine? Your call. How bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket?A head gasket seal takes about a half hour to replace and if you do it yourself shouldn't cost more than $20. You just have to remove the head cover, take off the old gasket and put a new one on, nothing to it.How bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket?I highly suggest that you take the car somewhere else to get a second opinion. Especially if you got your oil changed at an %26quot;oil change only%26quot; shop like Jiffy Lube or Express Lube. Never ever trust the judgement of the employees at those types of places because they're not qualified to do or suggest anything besides an oil change. How bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket?what this means is your car has cylinders, usually 4, 6, 8 and 12. these fill with air, fuel is squirted in and the spark plug ignites and the cylinder is blasted down for 1 full rotation where it fill again with air. and so forth. On the other side of the cylinder oil lubricates the cylinder head to smoothly glide it up and down. the oil and gasoline are separated by a gasket. (rubber seal if you will). Now you have a cracked seal, so oil is leaking into the cylinder and deluding the gas, and burning the oil. Your exhaust should be a tint of blue. Indicating your burning oil. The car will burn and use up oil so check your fluid level. the engine will need to be broken down and opened to get to the head to replace the seal. This will cost a bit. It will depend on what location you live in to how much it will cost. in my location i estimate $250-300

if your heads are leaking coolant you have a different problem.

check your coolant levels are they going down?

then check the spark plugs do they have oil on them?

this should narrow down your problemHow bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket?Well im not sure of the cost but if you don't Anti freeze will leak into your oil and seize the motor, and before that you will consume A tot of oil. If you are planning on keeping the car or trading it in I think you should change it
