How would I know if someone put water or sugar inside my car's gas tank?

My car broke down. It was running fine. I think someone I have a problem with put something in my gas tank. The mechanic told that the head gasket blew up and water and oil mixed up, but when i first opened the carburetor it was full of white looking stuff i guess it is a mixture of water and oil i think. the head gasket is fixed, but he is telling that he is still having a problem with the car and has to change the carbourator. How would I know if this person did something to my car?How would I know if someone put water or sugar inside my car's gas tank?IF IT WAS WATER THE CAR WOULD SPUTTER . IF IT WAS SUGAR THE CAR WOULD NEVER RUN AGAIN. THE SUGAR DISSOLVES IN GAS THEN GETS HEATED WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING. AFTER YOU TURN THE MOTOR OFF AND THE CAR COOLS OFF. THE SUGAR RE-CRYSTALIZES AND CAUSES THE MOTOR TO SEIZE. THE HEAD GASKET BLOWING SOUNDS LIKE THE CAR GOT TOO HOT, LOW ON WATER OR OIL. SINCE YOUR STILL HAVING PROBLEMS SOUNDS LIKE IT MAY HAVE CRACKED THE HEAD.How would I know if someone put water or sugar inside my car's gas tank?Someone just blessed me with a car and its sitting in my drive way with a fake plate, hasnt been moved sence i got it,some crazy people that live upstairs down like me %26amp; dont even know me they are/ or have planned to put sugar in my tank. Can the tank be taken off before I run the car to see sugar?

How would I know if someone put water or sugar inside my car's gas tank?Unless someone saw said person do something to your car, there is no way to tell. How would I know if someone put water or sugar inside my car's gas tank?you could ask them. maybe the guilt will well up and they'll confess. How would I know if someone put water or sugar inside my car's gas tank?take a gas sample and check it. disconnect your gas line to your carburetor and see if it has any water or contaminationHow would I know if someone put water or sugar inside my car's gas tank?Nah I seriously doubt it.

A carbuerated car is different than a fuel injected. WHen you shut off the engine there is a bit of vacuum that can draw oil up into the carb and that can mess it up good.

If it is fuel injected like most post 1984 cars are ask him where the carb is.... then you can run....How would I know if someone put water or sugar inside my car's gas tank?Just dumping some packets of Sugar really does not do much damage to your cars engine. If someone really knew what they were doing...bye..bye engine. I'm not going into detail about HOW to do it.....there may have been something out in....but Carburetors can be cleaned and rebuilt...I just wonder why your guy is just replacing the whole thing ?

Considering purchasing 2000 Outback, 165,000 miles as 2nd vehicle..reliability/gasket question?

A friend of ours has a 2000 Subaru Outback for sale. We've been wanting to get a wagon type vehicle for my wife because she hates getting our kid's carseat in/out of the back of the Sunfire (our only vehicle currently). The Outback will be the %26quot;extra%26quot; vehicle except for long (about 200 miles roundtrip) drives to our relatives' houses. I see that there are head gasket problems mentioned a lot in the years PRIOR to this model so I'm wondering from those owners who own or HAVE OWNED this specific model and year:

1) How often have you had this head gasket replacement issue come up? (The gaskets in this one have been changed recently)

2) Any other major repair issues?

3) How many miles on yours currently? (or when it died or you sold it whichever came first if you no longer have). Concerned a bit about the high mileage but our budget is probably too limited to buy a whole lot newer model.

Thanks for your help in advance.Considering purchasing 2000 Outback, 165,000 miles as 2nd vehicle..reliability/gasket question?your problem is going to be the 165K + miles on it :S Once a car gets up there it starts having problems. I had a car and was fine until it hit 120,000+ . Same thing with my sister. Little things startd to go. $1,000 here, $500 there. It started to add up :SConsidering purchasing 2000 Outback, 165,000 miles as 2nd vehicle..reliability/gasket question?I'm sorry that all of us answering so far have NOT owned any Outbacks. We're just answering based upon general common knowledge.

I used to have an older 1981 Subuaru wagon, and that engine had about 160K on it, and it was still going strong. I would usually trust Subaru engines, much as I trust Toyota engines. But admittedly there might be some gasket problems. Wish I could help on that specific question.

It's true that having 165K on the Outback is important, but not its death. The problem is that mileage and use affects ALL parts of a car, not just the engine, and all parts of the engine.

I'd be worried about strength and condition of struts/shocks. They should have already been replaced once and are due a 2nd time, becuase they usually last about 70K or so miles.

Also things like alternator, water pump, etc need consideration. But most of all is timing chain. Those usuall last 100K miles, and you want to change them out BEFORE they break. And always check condition of water pump when working on timing belt/chain, because it's the same dang labor to fix both. Much easier and cheaper to get new water pump at same time as chain, if it's getting older.

The mileage isn't too bad for the years used. 10 yr old car (for 2010 models), means that 165Kmiles driven is about 16K annually, which is just a bit more than normal. So it's not excessively used for its age, and that's good.

I would imagine that if there is a gasket problem with the Outbacks, then its because of the material of the gasket, rather than of engine. But since it's been changed recently, I think you could get some excellent use and time out of the Outback before any possible gasket problem again.

I used to think getting used cars meant I didn't have to deal with all extra stuff on cars, I could just buy it, get in and drive, but I've since learned the opposite.Considering purchasing 2000 Outback, 165,000 miles as 2nd vehicle..reliability/gasket question? The Outback of your year should be 2.5L SOHC, considered as the phase 2 engine. The subaru had request to add the coolant conditioner into the coolant if not yet do so. The engine HG may have external leak instead of the internal leak (the phase 1 DOHC).

If you have a chance, select the model after the 2002 which means anything made after the 6/02 (that stamped on the driver side).

To answer your questions:

1. It did not have a definite mileage. Some had it around 40k and replaced it and ended for another 200k. Some had it around 130k and blown off... You can check to see if the car had it done by looking the gasket around, to see if any leakage observe. If you see oil stain or coolant leaking, don't even border to negotate the price, skip the car.

2. Timing belt, the interval is 95k and then 190k for your car, 165k seemed to be the second timing belt replacement...and also did the previous owner clean the tranny fluid and keep the car in well maintanence condition?

3. I have the 1999 Legacy Outback 30year LTD edition. I decided to have the gasket done because the coolant is running kinda funny (a sign for the HG going to fail), it cost me around 3k-4k for it. The car has 94000 miles on it. If you like, I can sell you mine...I live in MD...

How to check the timing on a 1999 mercury cougar?

It just stopped running.I use it for a work car.It is a 1999 2.5 V6.The gas guage shows 1/4 tank still.I changed the fuel filter. While I had the filter off I turned on the key and gas came out but I dont know if its enough pressure to start it.It will hit and barely run if I mess with it enough but it smokes white looking smoke. It had the same problem not long after I bought it and the dealer took it back and had it less than a day and fixed it.He said it was the fuel filter the first time.Would a fuel pump being bad make the smoke white?Usually that means head gasket cracked I know but it was doing it before and they didnt change any gasket?Has any one had this problem or does any one have any advice for me?I dont want to get rid of it,I have nearly nothing in it so I can afford to fix it.I'd just like to try to fix it myself before I take it to a garage. Thanks. How to check the timing on a 1999 mercury cougar?if the exhuast is pouring out white smoke in large amounts you got a cracked cyl head or head gasket issues, Youre looking between $1500 to $2000 for a fix. If its the head gasket job or cracked cyl head. How to check the timing on a 1999 mercury cougar? The 4 cylinder Cougars had a timing belt. If your 6 cylinder has a timing belt (rather than a timing chain), then it could have slipped or broken especially if you have over 100,000 miles on the engine. If you do have a timing belt, your engine is probably not an %26quot;interference%26quot; type, so you could remove a spark plug and check the cylinder compression using a compression gauge to see if there's little or no compression due to the timing being way off. If the engine seems to crank faster than normal with a full battery charge, that's a sign that the timing belt broke or slipped because the engine is easy to turn over when the cylinder compression is down.

I'm too scared to do an oil change.?

I have a 4 cylinder vtec honda accord and I want to put Mobil 1 5w30 4Q + Lucas oil stabilizer 1Q; total 5 quarts into the engine. Total engine oil capacity according the the manual says 4.5 US quarts. How should I go about putting this oil in?

I am kind of a noob with oil changes. I have done it before on this car but I feel like I know nothing. What I think I can do is put in 3 quarts mobil1 then 1 quart Lucas then .5 quart mobil1 then check the levels, add a little more then check? Any advice would be nice. I was also thinking of saving a little Lucas for use in my lawnmower engine.

Second question is since I am using synthetic, I want to prepare for likely leaks. I heard that most often synthetic leaks come from one spot, but I cant remember what part (head gasket?) and I cant find where I read it. Anyways, I want to know how to check for oil leaks and what to do once I find them.

So ya, I dont know why but I keep procrastinating cause I dont want to mess up an oil change.I'm too scared to do an oil change.?just use the correct 5/20 wt oil your car requires and if your not able to do it take it to the closest Honda dealer

and synthetic oils are by far the biggest waste of money for your Accord. No honda models use it.

but if you think paying more for oil is better well I got some special gas tank magnets that i will sell ya for 100 bucks each :)I'm too scared to do an oil change.?Just take it to an oil change shop. It think it's only $60 or even less...I'm too scared to do an oil change.?If you use mobil one oil you do not need to add anything else. The oil is one of the best and needs nothing more.I'm too scared to do an oil change.?O.k. I am not going to promote using mobil-1 oil or any other brand. I believe in using what the owners manual says. For instance, I use Valvoline 5-30W in my wifes 04 Tahoe. Additives are more of a waste of money than a help and I wouldn't use them unless for a transmission shudder or something so don't trust everything you read on the bottle. I only have 15 years as a technician. O.k, for the oil change. You've done it before so it should come back to you. But here we go. First, raise and properly support the front of the car to gain access to the drain plug. Place a drain pan under the car and remove the plug from the engine oil pan. Let all the oil drain. Remove the oil filter and let the oil drain from there also. REINSTALL THE OIL PLUG, AND TIGHTEN IT. I can't tell how many engines I've seen ruined because the drain plug was not tightened. Take a little bit of new oil on your finger and lube the gasket of the new oil filter. Install the new oil filter after cleaning the area with a rag to remove any old oil. Lower the car. Pour in the amount of oil the owners manual calls for. Look under the car and check for leaks. Check the dipstick. It should read a little high. Start the car and watch the oil pressure guage/light and make sure it comes to normal. Turn off the car, check for leaks again, and check the oil level. Your done...Good luck, hope it helps...I'm too scared to do an oil change.?So easy, I can do it...but I won'tI'm too scared to do an oil change.?By my calculation you should put in .88% of the 4 qts of 5w30 and .88% of the synthetic.Roughly 3 and 3/4 5 w30 and 3/4 synthetic. You are right the head gasket is the likely place for a leak and fixing it would be as someone suggested not to use the synthetic.Minor leaking can be expected but unless your losing significant oil(qt a week) replacing the head gasket would be out of the question.I would avoid messing with the head gasket,it is costly and often times complicates further engine problems.I'm too scared to do an oil change.?if you procrastinate to long you ll be asking about an engine change so GET R DONE. the oil you use is up to you. i would use it but i change my oil alot because i drive alot of miles. i would put in 2-3 quarts of Mobil 1 oil then what ammount of lucas and the rest with mobil. make sure you start the engine before you top it off so you know how much oil you need to add

  • 98 5.7 vortec seems to blow a lot of white smoke. intakes were changed.how do i check for bad head gaskets?

Generally if head gaskets go bad, either coolant is pumped into the oil or oil is pumped in to coolant or both. It turns oil foamy white and it turns coolant kind of a light brown.

If your head gaskets are blown, your engine will heat in some situations. There is also a device called a pressure tester that you connect to the coolant filler neck on your radiator. If you put the tester on the cooling system and it doesn't hold it's pressure then your head gaskets probably are blown.

White smoke can result from condensation in your exhaust system too. The heads could be leaking coolant into the exhaust ports in the head. If your engine isn't heating and isn't pumping the coolant and oil together, your gaskets are probably all right.

Use the pressure tester to see if your cooling system bleeds off pressure.

How much would it cost to...?

how much would it cost to paint a 4 door subaru... black with silver spiderweb pattern, change 2.2 liter head gaskets, right front axel, struts, timing belt, water pump, and change interior fabric color. How much would it cost to...?depends on what color your vehicle is now... it it's a different color the paint will cost you upwards of $5,000 alone without the spiderweb... head gaskets you may as well do yourself because there is only one and it won't take but 2 hours or so and costs only $8.00 or so... timing belt will take 5 minutes and cost you $20.00... interior upholstery will spike the price, especially if you want leather... leather can cost you around $250.00 per captain chair... a bench seat would be more along the lines of $500... axles struts and water pumps all depend on how hard they are to get out... the more time you pay someone to try and get these items out the more money you are putting in their pocket... what you are talking about doing isn't cheap in the least... I would suggest sticking with whatever color the car already is, then do the spiderweb pattern on top of that... that'll take $3,000 off this project real fast...How much would it cost to...?roughly 8500 to 12000 pending on paintHow much would it cost to...?Earl Scheib will do the car the black for about $200. The spiderweb design you will need to price out but I would guess around a grand. The head gasket should be, for parts and labor, about $400 or so. The axle, about $300. Struts, will run approximately $200 plus. The water pump will run between $40 and $100, depending on what quality and warranty you want. Labor should be about 3 or 4 hours. So, about $300. You can buy a spray paint to change the interior color. It runs about $10 a can I believe. You'll probably want 3 or 4 cans.

    97 civic engine swap?

My car has a blown head gasket and I am planning to swap the d16y8 instead of changing the gasket. what engine should be better in terms of hp/cost? should I go with b18b, b16a2, b18c gsr or b18c itr? and how much should I expect to pay for it including the labor cost?

    Thanks

PS: I am not gonna boost it.97 civic engine swap? There is no replacement for displacement. If you are going to be going n/a and you want the biggest bang, go for the b18c5 (ITR). But yes cost will be higher for that motor due to the low amount of them available. But if you want the best engine for hp/cost, then you want a b16a2 (Civic si) which is much easier to find and a lot cheaper. Plus in the future you could always swap a Type-R top end on the b16 and gain more as well.

Whatever you choose, I would recommend a v-tec engine!!!

The B16b is great for boosting but when it comes to n/a it's not worth it.97 civic engine swap?if you want a faster car sell your pile, and buy a American sports car, because nobody thinks a Honda that sounds like a weed whacker and has 20%26quot; rims is cool (except for you and 3 other people)

    DEATH TO THE WEED-WHACKER HONDAS

Has anyone ever used Blue Devil Gasket Sealant?? or any other product like it?

PLEASE... before you preach to me about using additives please... just dont! If you really want to lecture to me about using these and think that I shouldn't then by all means....Feel free to send me a check for $1,000 to get a new gasket, or come and give me a ride to work. If not, then please just click away from this page.

(sorry to be rude, but i know they are not a good fix I just want to hear from anyone that has used them or knows someone that has)

So basically, I have a blown head gasket and my %26quot;buddy%26quot;/oil change and flush guy recommended that if there is ABSOLUTELY no way that i could pony up the cash for a new gasket but i had no other mode of transportation at all that i should look into using an additive.

So I asked him if he could do it, to make sure its done right since I'm not the most handy with things like that.

So, long story short he did it and then told me once I take it home let it sit overnight.

but im slightly confused because shouldn't he have to flush it out?

or does it stay in and do its job?

The kind he put in is %26quot;Blue Devil%26quot; sealant

this is a link to their website where it shows the directions on the back of the bottle:

    https://www.gouniversalproducts.com/prod

    and i notice on the directions on the website it says %26quot;after the test drive, let engine cool before installing new thermostat.....(like overnight?).. and refill with 50/50 coolant mixture.%26quot;

its kind of a unique situation because i just had my thermostat serviced (or at least i though i got it fixed) but the people put the wrong O ring on there so then my buddy guy didnt want to put it back on with the wrong O ring, so he left it out for me to bring down to the other guys.

so since the thermostat is still out should i get the O ring then take my car down to the guy and have him flush the sealant out and fill with 50/50???

    Thank you!!!

so please.. if there is anyone that has used this product before or knows someone that did could you please let me know how you did it and if it worked. (i assume its only gonna hold for a month or so, but i figured it was better than my engine seizing up)Has anyone ever used Blue Devil Gasket Sealant?? or any other product like it?if your putting a head gasket on then no kind of sealant goes on that gasket. if you do that then it won,t seal. sealant is ok for the thermostat and water pump gasket but not on the head gasket. it has its own sealant on it when you buy it.

Someone told me I've blown my 'Head gasket' but not so bad that they can't fix it?

Hi. For 30 yrs I've always looked after my cars, regular tune ups, oil changes, putting in water etc. During an illness I did forget to check my water and steam was coming from my vehicle. I telephoned some one I know they looked at it and said they would have to take it to pieces and they could fix it. They said they would only charge me for the parts and not the labour, therefore I am truly grateful. Sadly that was 6 weeks ago. They have just informed me that they will try to get it finished by the end of the month. They know I'm a single parent and I have medical problems, and I help my older mum and dad out with trips to and fro from the hospital (actually they rely on me). I understand he's busy and got his own things to do, which I respect/understand but surely he should have informed me of this wait in the beginning especially since he originally said 2-3 weeks. I have tried to talk to him but every time I even mention the car it's like he's going to make me wait even longer. Does anyone know how long it usually takes to fix something like this? Please don't misunderstand me I am grateful for the help, I just don't understand cars. Oh the car is about 10yrs old and is a Renault. Thank you in advance?Someone told me I've blown my 'Head gasket' but not so bad that they can't fix it?The work at an auto shop can last about a good week and hit about a good thousand! here's the problem though, I know he's saving u money but If it is a headgasket, u need to have it fixed ASAP! the longer the engine sits with water in the block it's gonna start rotting and picking away at the block. Once that happens.... hello rebuilt engine!Someone told me I've blown my 'Head gasket' but not so bad that they can't fix it?They should have gotten all of the parts within a week or maybe 2 if there are multiple parts or some of them are hard to find. The Head Gasket is basically a seal between the engine block and the engine head. The top of the engine needs to be taken off and everything attached to the top of the engine. It doesnt take more than a couple of hours to remove everything, a few seconds to put the gsaket on, and a couple more to reattach everything. It might take a day for a slow mechanic to do the work once getting the parts even if there are other parts to replace, not 4-5 weeks going on 2 months.Someone told me I've blown my 'Head gasket' but not so bad that they can't fix it?There are no parts that can't be fixed by replacing them. Replace it it at your ealiest possible to avoid even more damage.Someone told me I've blown my 'Head gasket' but not so bad that they can't fix it?well should have took like two days to fix it,

so 6 wks your being screwed over

just call another shop or two ask them how much to replace head gasket and how long it might take a week would be a long timeSomeone told me I've blown my 'Head gasket' but not so bad that they can't fix it?how do they know it,s the head gasket ? there,s other things can make it steam besides the head gasket. did they check the oil to see if anti-freeze is in it? or did they start it up to see if white smoke was coming out the tailpipe? it could be a broken hose, a faulty thermostat or the radiator could be the problem.but since they have it torn down i would say by working on it in his spare time he should had it back on the road no later then a week or so.Someone told me I've blown my 'Head gasket' but not so bad that they can't fix it?Renault parts are available in the UK from Euro Parts same day or within 24 hours, if its a normal Renault and its not a 16 valve engine then it would take about 10 hours to replace a head gasket, 16 valve engine around 16 hours, Diesel engine would be around 11 hours.

Renault's are prone to cracked heads and lots of overheating faults, depending on the model you have and which engine package is fitted there may be lots of gadgets and gizmo's that if fail will cause overheating.

Renault'ss also suffer from a residue in the header tank, put this with low water and steam its easy to diagnose a head gasket but the problem will be something else. unless you have had regular coolant change you will have a sandy coloured residue in the header tank.

    Good luck.

    95 Honda Civic overheating. Help?

My 95 civic has gradually began to overheat. I've changed the water pump, thermostat - even left it off for a while, drained the fluid, no change has worked.

If it was a blown head gasket, how could I tell? The oil has no trace of liquid - just changed it yesterday.

Is there a way tell if the radiator is clogged?95 Honda Civic overheating. Help?i have a overheating problem with my 94 ex civic also , found what the culprit was.... my FAN wasn't coming on so make aure the fan kicks on , if not it will overheat , check all sensors and WIRING.....for the fan relay , switch and temp sensor . some wires tend to break or corrode from time to time on older cars not allowing them to do what they were intended to do . so make sure you check it thruout95 Honda Civic overheating. Help? This may or may not be your problem, but its one that is commonly overlooked. Make sure you have purged all of the air out of the system. Excessive air in your cooling system will tend to gather at the highest point in the system, which is normally where the thermostat is located. This causes the air to collect around the thermostat, which prevents it from heating up and opening properly, thus causing the engine to overheat. Some cars have a set screw located in the thermostat housing or at a high point of the cooling system. This is to essentially %26quot;bleed%26quot; out the air in the system. Start out when the engine is cool so there isn't a lot of pressure built up. Make sure your cap is on tight. You will need to run the engine and you eventually want your thermostat to open up so the coolant will begin to circulate and start to move the air bubbles within the system. A lot of times you can unscrew the set screw to the last couple threads and you'll see air begin to bubble out. You want to eventually see a solid stream of coolant come out. Repeat this a few times until you stop seeing air coming out. Some systems can be very stubborn. I have had to jack up the front of a car before to ensure the thermostat was higher than the coolant jackets where air can get trapped. Hopefully you won't have to resort to that.

How long can I go with a blown head gasket?

Well, after the questions and research, I'm pretty sure I have a blown headgasket. I need this car for one more year, then I will be able to get a new one.

I dont smell anything when driving, the engine runs fine when I keep the coolant up, no leaks, etc.

How long can I milk this for? Is it likely I could keep it for a year by just keeping the coolant level up and regular oil changes?

Thanks,How long can I go with a blown head gasket?A VERY difficult question to answer, since there is no way of knowing just how much mix between the coolant and the oil is going on!!! Quite honestly, you are taking a big chance here, since no matter how often you change your oil, the coolant is contaminating it almost instantly, thereby reducing its lubricating properties. Also, this is going to put MAJOR strain on the rest of the engine, since the coolant is also contaminated and will not cool the engine as efficiently as it is meant to.... If I were you, I would either shorten my duration to no more than a month or two with NO high-speed driving, or bite the bullet and change the gasket ASAP (I mean, if you are going to change it anyway, then do it NOW so that the engine suffers minimal damage). Bear in mind that your engine could very well seize unexpectedly and lock up on you when you are driving on the freeway at 70MPH.... not pretty!!! Also, look at it this way, after a year when you are ready for your new wheels, you will be able to use the old clunker as a trade-in or sell it to someone and make some money back, but if you carry on just as you are doing now, your old clunker will be ready for the scrap heap by then, if it hasn't already croaked on you.... so.... CHANGE THE GASKET!!! :DHow long can I go with a blown head gasket?I guess you'll find out!

If you know somebody you can trust take it to that person. My sister-in-law just had this happen to her and wham now she is without a car until the headgaskets get repaired. It is better to be safe than sorry. If you take it to a dealership to be repaired they have a service parts replacement warranty for a full year or 12,000 miles which ever comes first on the part or parts that had to be replaced. This is something to think about. How long can I go with a blown head gasket?sorry but no the engine coolant leaking into the cylinders washes away the oil which in turn will cause the engine to sieze.perhapes if u are not driving long distances or long periods of time then maybe.if the exhaust from your car is grey and it looks like water drops on your oil dipstick then yes u have a blown head gasket or cracked/warped heads and no u will not get 1 yearHow long can I go with a blown head gasket? If you're sure it a bad gasket???? it's not that common, mostly with cast iron engines w/ aluminum heads. But, what I would do is get a radiator cap with a lower rating. If you have a 10 lb cap, get a 5 lb, or there abouts. This will take some of the pressure off the gasket. Also remember that coolant is much more stable and expands much less than water, And a cooler thermostat will open up sooner and releive the pressure a little more. Last, I guess, a tube of that aluminum radiator sealer. Good shot at making it.How long can I go with a blown head gasket? It will run until it hydro locks from the water in the oil.How long can I go with a blown head gasket?if you have a leaking head gasket, and your going to get rid of it, why dont you put some bars-leak in it, that will slow it down, until you get rid of it, just dr. it up some.

  • Can a garage declare my extended warranty void due to a missed service even on a non service related claim?

I took out extra warranty when I bought my car. The head Gasket went just under a year ago and was replaced under warranty. The car has now developed the same problem. The garage replaced the Thermostat but said the Warranty was not valid because I had not had the car serviced. (It did have a full oil change with the new head). I had to pay for the replaced thermostat and the garage gave the car back to me saying that it seemed fine to them and was not overheating but that I should keep an eye on it. Within 2 days the car was losing power and billowing smoke. It has now completely died and I fear the Head may have gone again. (Still within the 12 month period since it's replacement.) Surely the Head Gasket should still be under it's own warranty. Also this would not have been covered at a normal service so how could a service have helped. Are they just trying it on? Should I be covered for this? Should they have replaced the Thermostat as standard procedure when the Head went first? Can a garage declare my extended warranty void due to a missed service even on a non service related claim?A lot of extended warranties are the same. Miss the service schedule by a day without calling them to tell them it will be done tomorrow, miss the mileage by a mile, and many of them are immediately void.

How long do head gaskets on 2003 nissan sentra GXE last?

I bough this car new, and now it has 85K miles on it and not it's even 4 years old. I am very good about oil changes and maintenance, but now at 85K miles I have to replace the Head Gaskets. I have only taken my car to the dealer for servicing, so no other mechanics have touched my car. I don't believe it's normal to replace the head gaskets so soon. I will never buy a nissan again. How long do head gaskets on 2003 nissan sentra GXE last?No it's not normal. A head gasket should last the life of the engine, 200K+ miles. However if the engine was ever overheated or has been abused then that could severely shorten the life of the head gasket.

I would ask if Nissan would cover it under warranty, even if it's outside of the written warranty sometimes manufacturer's will fix severe defects like this just to make the customer happy. You may have to be firm with them and request to speak with managers at the dealer and maybe even the regional Nissan reps. Also most cars come factory with a 100K powertrain warranty and the engine/head gasket is definately part of the powertrain. So keep asking, and keep bothering them almost all dealers are reluctant to just offer warranty service because it costs them money and the love to try to get away with the customer paying for stuff like this. How long do head gaskets on 2003 nissan sentra GXE last?Head gaskets should last the life of the engine assuming you also change the antifreeze as per the mfg. recommendation, as this gives you the anti corrosion you need as well as freeze protection. Or if the engine has not overheated causing the heads to warp.

What is the Deal with BURNING or BOILING Coolant and the CAR isnt Overheating and NO Blown head Gasket?

Does it mean i need to change my Thermostat?

I made a 50/50 Coolant mix and put it to EXACTLY 1/2 the Expansion Reservoir w engine STONE COLD and let Engine run for liek 10 monutes with Cap off. I turned on the HTR as my controls are OFF -MAX -NORM - B/L (AC) then -VENT- -HTR- DEF. I saw %26quot;Smoek/steam%26quot; coming from the Tank; at 15 minutes (it rose a little bit when i turned the Heater off,) I put the Cap on.I turned the car off, and took the cap off; it must have pressurized quickly, a LITTLE BIT was coming out of the Overflow Hose that goes by the Tire. i turned it on again, let the Smoke (Boiling coolant,???) Die down a little, drove 5 minutes... I heard Air coming back to the Expansion Tank (My understanding it is SUPPOSED to do this, as it is a %26quot;Self-bleeding system%26quot;) and Nothing came out, i didnt take the cap off. I did this twice more, Supermarket to hardees then Harees to Home.

Accuras an Hondas are part of that group of cars.

New gasket will not fix it.

You need the head rebuilt and skimmed, as liner %26quot;chattering%26quot; causes a ridge in the head which a new gasket will not seal either.

There is a guy in Kent ( G Wood Engineering) who can machine the head and fit ring inserts into it where the gasket mates to the cylinder head and block. Head is then machined flat and with a new gasket hey presto, it works.

Also check the liners haven't moved and popped the seals in the block, as it is a common problem after head removal.

Never %26quot;lift%26quot; the head off, always twist so as not to pull the liner off the seal, otherwise it's an engine strip.Rover200 keeps losing power, oil is creamy, water drunk in minutes, over rev'ing, cant use car. any1 help?well to start out the head gasket is blowen agin and if this has happend two times now it is going to need a new header to or u will blow the hole motor this will probly cost more money then u thought but once it is done then u will have to get an oil flush and changed and a raditore flush also then new flueid after this the car should run like a topRover200 keeps losing power, oil is creamy, water drunk in minutes, over rev'ing, cant use car. any1 help?Sorry, but it's the head gasket again.

  • My car needs the motor to be replaced how will this change my car?

Will it drive better or will i not really see a change? I'm wondering because the reason its being repaired it because it overheated and they first thought it was the head gasket but they see I blew the valves also.... Not to sure what all this means. My car needs the motor to be replaced how will this change my car?Overheating doesn't necessarily mean a bad head gasket. It could be low on coolant or have a thermostat issue. If you blew valve seals that means the valves in the head/ valve train aren't closing properly so air going in and out ( thats what the valves control ) is irratic and cause poor performance.

A good way to self check for a possible head gasket leak, is if the coolant is brown or if it looks like its contiminated with oil and vice versa if the oil looks like it has coolant in it.

If the motor is complete replaced, it should be like driving a new car, because the motor is fresh or with lower mileage. My car needs the motor to be replaced how will this change my car?with a new engine it should drive and run close to new. now if ya go with a used engine hard to say but heck anything that runs will be better than your current engineMy car needs the motor to be replaced how will this change my car?Well hopefully it will run like it used to. How can I tell if I have a bad head gasket?

I have a 1999 Ford Expedition. It seems to be running fine, no change in any gauges, but two days ago smelled hot when I got home. I checked the coolant level, and it was very low, added 2 gallons. There doesent seem to be any leak anywhere. A friend saw a little bit of white stuff on the oil fill cap and said that meant a bad head. But he also said you should be able to see white smoke coming out of exhaust or smell antifreeze, which we could do neither. Is it possible that it was just low on coolant, nothing else? How can I tell if I have a bad head gasket?Check your oil for foamy, %26quot;coffee with cream%26quot; color, also when your car temp is up to normal operating temp, check the coolant for an oily film on top.

Keep up on the coolant, check it every day, because if it is a blown gasket, and you let it run hot, you will ruin the haeds, then you are talking major $.How can I tell if I have a bad head gasket?put a dollar bill up to the tail pipe. If it blows the dollar bill outward then it is fine if it sucks the dollar bill up to the pipe then you have a blown head gasket. How can I tell if I have a bad head gasket?if you are loosing coolant it has to be going somewhere!!!!!!

white round your filler cap could be just from condensation,,,,, is your oil level increasing or is your oil truning milky????

this could be from a blown head gasket or cracked head,,,,,

good luck,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,How can I tell if I have a bad head gasket?very possible low coolant only, if you dont see a coolant leak around the heads. however running on very low coolant can destroy the heads and or just gaskets if your lucky. the white stuff in the cap, is just moisture, and or condensation. mixed with the oil, it looks milky. when you pull the dipstick and see the same milky mix, this is bad. this means you have a mix of coolant and oil in the crankcase, and general with that you will hve head problems. white smoke is coolant burning, that can be a head or internal engine problem. but not to be confused with steam, that is normal with different temp changes and exhaust sytem warming up. as you notice on cold days.

Can changing a shower head cause leaks and flood in the next room?

I'm a tenant living in a house. The landlord lives on the 2nd floor. The main floor is divided into 2 units. I live in one of the units.

Recently the landlord told me about water leak in the other unit and it's probably due to our bathtub problem. The landlord just purchased this house for less than 1 year so he still has warranty from the builder.

Today the builder came and checked the bathtub. He said the leak is caused by the shower head. The shower head is missing a gasket in the junction so it's leaking. We did notice a leak in the junction when we first install it, but we thought it's ok because the water is leaking into the tub anyway.

What I don't understand is how is it possible that a leak in the shower head that goes into the tub would cause water leaking into the other unit? The landlord claims that they pulled the floor up on the other unit because it's all damaged. Now they want us to pay for fixing the floor in the other unit and they haven't collected rent for the whole month. And everything is caused by the shower head without a gasket. Can anyone help?

I'm trying to understand if it's possible that changing a shower head would cause so much damage and whether we are liable for that. Any help would be greatly appreciatedCan changing a shower head cause leaks and flood in the next room?Utterly impossible if all you did was change the shower head. Tell them that they'll have to sue.Can changing a shower head cause leaks and flood in the next room?My guess is the arm that the shower head attaches to and runs into the wall was leaking inside the wall. The reason this probably happened is whoever installed it did not use teflon tape on the male thread of the arm prior to screwing it in. If you installed your shower head and it leaked at the connection, my guess is you didn't use any either. What you did would not have caused the damage behind the wall if all you did was change the head, not the whole arm. There is no way just changing the head only would leak behind the wall. The rubber gasket you are hearing about is in the fitting behind the wall that accepts the arm that sticks out and the shower head screws onto. Again, any issue with that rubber gasket is not your problem. The only way it could be your fault is if you changed the arm, and did not use teflon tape. Can changing a shower head cause leaks and flood in the next room? The riser inside the wall from the valve up to the shower arm is leaking. That is why it only leaks during a shower. Find and repair the leak and your problem should be over. Hope this helps.

    Are Helicoils reliable?

I have a 2002 Cadillac that has a leaking head gasket. Coolant leaks into the firing chamber. The Dealer said the engine is aluminum, so when they replace the gasket, they have to use helicoils to bolt the head back on. He said they can be a problem and can't make a guarantee. He has heard of one that went bad in 60 days. It will cost $1300 to change out one head gasket with helicoils.

I know I probably should not expect another 100,000 miles, but I think it might be worth it, if I can get another 50,000 miles with helicoils. It is a good car that was well maintained.

How long do helicoils normally last ? I would like to hear of any good or bad experiences from people who have used these. Are Helicoils reliable?I've used helicoils many times in jetski engines since many parts from the factory just have bolts threaded into aluminum.

If helicoils are installed correctly in your application, they should last indefinitely. They are no different that many other hardened metal inserts installed in a softer metal.

I have had them fail but it was due to corrosion and repeated removal and installation of a part in a saltwater marine environment. Are Helicoils reliable? It seems like the threads in the block are not in good condition. I would not recommend helicoils for this application. When the head is bolted down a lot of torque is applied and I doubt if they would hold.

I have used helicoils a lot in the past and they have proved to be effective %26quot;if fitted correctly%26quot;. Do You really want to take a chance.

If it were just a matter of replacing an attachment bolt hole I would say yes go aheadAre Helicoils reliable?I had a 1992 corsica with a 4 cylinder engine and went to pull a spark plug, the trheads snapped from the bolt head. I drilled the old opart out and was off on the centering and mangled the threads in the head. I used a helicoil with red loctite to install a new sparkplug and went 40,000 miles on it! The only reason I had to get rid of the car is the rack and pinion steering rusted off of the firewall!

How much does it normally cost to repair a head gasket on a 2002 ford mustang gt? drivers side?

started sputtering and losing power. felt like it was running on 7 cylinders. changed fuel filter, added fuel injector cleaner. checked coil packs, they are good, checked plugs, they are good. there was fluid around one spark plug kinda smelt like gas, but had a hint of antifreeze. not sure though( hopefully not). checked fuel injectors, they are all working. Its not throwing any codes or setting of any lights. could you tell me what you think or worse comes to worse replacing the head gasket. How much does it normally cost to repair a head gasket on a 2002 ford mustang gt? drivers side?1000? I'm guessing but its the labor that costs so much if you know a mechanic you could save a lot of money if they did the labor for half or free because you have to take the entire engine apart

(Water runs pretty clear, only has the -slight- cloudy color of water due to the Head Gasket leak, but it runs -clear-... Chemical Flush today, wonder if that will improve it even more..)About how long will my car take to warm up with No Thermostat vs With a Thermostat? If you're talking about the normal operating temperature of the engine, it will be all over the chart without a thermostat depending on many factors - it might even over heat under some conditions because the constant flow won't allow the coolant to linger in the radiator long enough to cool properly.

%26quot;One more day%26quot; shouldn't bother it at all.

And you've got it right.....from the engine block through the thermostat to the radiator and back into the block.About how long will my car take to warm up with No Thermostat vs With a Thermostat?with it being cold somewhat might never get warm

might take a few hours of hard driving

just so you know thermostat controls how the motor cool the coolant

by holding it in radiator to be cooled while whats in motor cooling motor

most of time what one add to flush is cheap and doesnt work that great

a radiator shop can boil it out and be like new again and you car needs a thermostat so motor can cool off

and being cold out side only wil help it not over heatAbout how long will my car take to warm up with No Thermostat vs With a Thermostat?Depends on several factors such as the outside temperature, whether the engine is under load (being driven) or just idling, etc.

But it is safe to say that it will take a lot longer.

By the way...if it's just water in there now, keep it from freezing. Water expands when frozen so it is a good way to rupture the radiator.

98 Malibu Intake Manifold, Water Pump, or Head Gasket?

I'm sorry I have read these concerns but I am so confused. I have a 98 Malibu 3100. I have a history of having to put coolant in my car about every 4 months, and no one could tell exactly where is was from.So I get my oil changed, and inspection done today.I notice the guy was checking my fluids, and I saw him poor coolant in the car, and he kept pooring. I thought how odd because my light didnt come on as usual.Next thing I know I'm being called out to my car. We look down and see liquid dropping but cant tell exactly where from.He told me I would need a high pressure test done, but the mechanic wasn't in today. He just told me to keep an eye out and bring it during the week so they could keep checking until the returns. So I go home, come out about 4 hours later, and I be damned if there wasn't a puddle under my car.I opened the hood, checked the tank...practically empty. How do I know if it is the intake manifold or head gasket? How do I know I will be given the correct diagnosis?!98 Malibu Intake Manifold, Water Pump, or Head Gasket? How do you know you won't?

What are your other options?98 Malibu Intake Manifold, Water Pump, or Head Gasket?Go to a trusted mechanic. Intake gasket failure is not uncommon on your car.98 Malibu Intake Manifold, Water Pump, or Head Gasket?Intake and Head gaskets are not as easy to tell as the watter pump. The water pump has a pully and is driven by a belt. The intake sits on the heads with a gasket between them. The head sits on top of the engin block with a gasket between them. The gasktes are either rubber or a fiber composit, looks like paper. Under your hood should be a sticker of the belt diagram and how to replace it. It should show you the water pumps location in relation to your engin. If you can see water (coolant) coming from around the water pump, then usually that would be the problem. However, often times a pin hole in a hose or the ratiator can go undetected for a long time. Good luck and I hope I helped you.98 Malibu Intake Manifold, Water Pump, or Head Gasket? If your head gasket is blown you will have coolant in your oil. It makes your oil look like a tan milky substance and you will blow white smoke out your tail pipe. Look at your radiators top and bottom hoses. Look at the water pump where it bolts on there is a gasket there that could be leaking. You could also have a hole in your radiator. Fill it up with water (Its Cheaper till you get it fixed) and drive a few miles (3-5), come back home and look to see if you can see where its coming out.98 Malibu Intake Manifold, Water Pump, or Head Gasket?these cars had a manifold gasket problem. 99-01 had factory recalls. you should be able to look them up in Chevy recall info. I don't know of the fix. whether they got a better gasket or added something.

If it was a head gasket you would loose power, usually98 Malibu Intake Manifold, Water Pump, or Head Gasket? It can be tricky to locate thes leaks and sometimes they don't know until they get in there.

Although may other cause could be the problem like your water pump could be going, frost plug or block htr is leaking depending on where you live, a radiator hose could be leaking, radiator could have a leak.

Try putting stop lesk powder in your radiator to see if it stops the leak. pepper or milk works too.

If you have a head gasket leak then you will generally have white smoke in the exhaust or coolant in your oil which would be seen by a milky color when checking the oil.98 Malibu Intake Manifold, Water Pump, or Head Gasket? Most of the time unless its a severe leak the cylinder head gaskets do not leak externally although there are exceptions. So if there is a puddle under the car there is a strong chance that it is the intake manifold gaskets. If you look under where the upper rad hose connects to the engine and you see a puddle of coolant thats were the intake gaskets usually leak.

Is there a temporary fix for a leaking head gasket?

I have a Subaru that was recently diagnosed with a leaking head gasket. It was not stated how severe it is, but my car's performance has not changed at all. It runs great and the coolant runs cool. I do not have the money to pay to get it fixed right now, but I need it to last me until I can pay it off. Since my car seems to be running very well right now, I assume the leak has not gotten really bad. Is there something I can do to slow the progression down so I can make this car last until I can afford to get a new one?Is there a temporary fix for a leaking head gasket? There is no temp fix. it will get worse as time goes on. get it fixed soon.Is there a temporary fix for a leaking head gasket? If the leak is internal, you should not drive the vehicle. The coolant in the crankcase will eventually cause a serious engine failure.

If it's just a minor external leak, merely keep an eye on the coolant level and continue to top it off as necessary.

I have never (despite the claims on the cans and bottles) found any magic elixir that will even slow the progress of a blown head gasket, let alone %26quot;repair%26quot; it.Is there a temporary fix for a leaking head gasket? It will lose lubrication %26amp; overheat if you keep driving it that way. I guess you could try JB Weld as long as there's no fluid in the area %26amp; u don't intend to sell the car. It's redneck, but thats how I roll....Is there a temporary fix for a leaking head gasket?Hello there. I am a mechanic with over 23 years professional experience, and am currently SR. Equipment mechanic for the state of Virginia. now that you know my qualifications let me get to your car problem....

Yes the problem will continue to get worse the more you drive it, but there is a few things you can do to help prolong it's untimely demise. Please bear in mind that performing any of these suggestions will VOID any existing warranty on your vehicle, and should only be used in extreme cases; these are by NO MEANS a repair but simply a band-aid until you can get the vehicle serviced at a certified shop =)

First of all you didn't specify if your head was leaking compression, exhaust, or coolant or if the leak was internal or external to the engine.

I'll assume that you have a coolant leak (as they are the most common) and that it is external to the engine. By external I mean it is visibly leaking out of the engine. If this is the case here are a few things you can do to help it, or slow the leaking process.

The cooling system in your vehicle is pressurized, usually somewhere between 7-13 pounds of pressure is running in your cooling system. The pressure build up in the cooling system raises the boiling point of liquid. Something like 1 PSI= 2 extra degrees to boil. Anyway, the radiator cap itself is how the pressure is regulated. If you remove your radiator cap you will see a small spring and a piece of rubber on the end of it. The rubber seals the radiator opening and the spring holds pressure to it to whatever it's relief pressure is set to. Once the cooling system reaches that preset pressure, the spring releases and relieves the cooling system of the excess pressure. This is why you have an overflow tank in your cooling system.

If you removed the small piece of rubber on your radiator cap, then the cooling system will not pressurize. If the cooling system has no pressure on it, then the leak will slow exponentially. You will still have a leak, but it will not leak as fast.

Another %26quot;Old Timer%26quot; trick is to put regular old ground black pepper into your radiator. It sounds odd but, listen to the explanation of what doing this accomplishes. Ground pepper is fairly fine in texture. If you take ground pepper and soak it in water for a few minutes it absorbs some of the liquid and swells a bit. If you have a leak in your head gasket the pepper will make it's way to this leak and become trapped. Because the pepper is in a liquid, the same expansion will result and the pepper will eventually %26quot;seal%26quot; the leak closed.

These are the only two things you can do to slow the leaking process up a bit. I hope your car feels better soon, and these steps can buy you a few more miles. Happy driving! Is there a temporary fix for a leaking head gasket?Hi, Head gaskets can leak a lot of different ways. If the car runs good and isn't blowing white smoke or getting in the oil (milky) I'm not sure it's really leaking. Anyway, Yes they have block sealer that I would try. The pain is that you must remove every bit of antifreeze by flushing..a long and tedious process. Go to a parts store and you'll find K%26amp;W Block Seal and others, read the labels and buy the one you like (around $10-15) then read the directions carefully and follow them. I've used them with good results. Happy motoring..GeoIs there a temporary fix for a leaking head gasket? There is a good chance you can save yourself a BIG repair bill on this, but you have to have a little bit of auto savvy. You will need to find a Haynes or Chilton's manual, and copy the head gasket tightening sequence. Get the engine to full warm. Rent a torque wrench, and loosen and retighten each head bolt in the sequence listed. You will have to have removed your valve cover on each side of the engine to do this. In so doing, the head gasket can reseat itself. I hope you have been using only GENUINE SUBARU COOLANT!!! Many coolants on the market will eat holes through expensive alloy heads and gaskets. You can also remove your spark plugs, and see which plug tip is discolored by coolant intrusion. This head, then, is the one to concentrate on. I hope you understand what I am writing, here. Power wash your engine before you start this project. It is far easier to see and work on this way. Good Luck!!

I think I have a Blown Head Gasket, but I am still not sure...can someone help me out?

Ok here is my situation: I have a 98 Toyota Camry XLE V6. I bought it about 4 1/2 months ago, I am not really a big car expert so it looked fine to me. The next day when I started my car, the car blew smoke out. It was a whitish, dirty looking color. I asked my dad, he said it might be the head gasket. However, I am still in doubt. The car runs fine, it does not over heat and it only blows smoke sometimes not every day. I still drive my car every day with no problems, I performed some maintenance like changing the oil and spark plugs. Ive been taking care of my car but yeah, generally how long will a car run if you have a bad gasket? Is it worth fixing? Should I go get a coolant flush to see if it was just rust? The coolant container does look a bit dirty.....please help me out! I dont know what to do, my parents would be so upset if my car broke down on me simply because thats the car they bought me. Should I keep driving it, see what the problem is or just sell it?I think I have a Blown Head Gasket, but I am still not sure...can someone help me out?smell the exhaust if it smells like coolant than its a blown head gasket. also check the oil if there is any water it will be whitish cause it mixed with oil then its a blown head gasket or cracked block. since its only a 98 toyota . toyotas are good vehicles. then its probaly excess oil being burned off. also ask someone to do a pressire test on the radiator if its not holding pressure that could mean a blown head gasket. a tuneup is not expensive and a oil change and coolant flush, that should maybe solve the problem . if it still blows out smoke then it could be the head gasket. your car would run rough if it was a head gasket cause the difference in compression ratios between the cylindersI think I have a Blown Head Gasket, but I am still not sure...can someone help me out?If it is a head gasket you would have noticed oil and coolant oozing out when you changed the spark plugs-also it would be overheating all the time and losing alot of oil and coolant.I think I have a Blown Head Gasket, but I am still not sure...can someone help me out?how many miles?i doubt the head gasket is blown,(it could be but not if it was drivin properly)i would just do the coolant flush and see what happens,do you hear any gurgaling swishing sound in your dash when you hit the gas?if you do then see if theres air in the cooling system and get it out,if its still there(the noise )then ya its your head, another way is to look at the head ,between the head and block see if you see external leaks,I think I have a Blown Head Gasket, but I am still not sure...can someone help me out? That smoke is not normal - you have coolant getting into the cylinders. End of story.

Your piggy bank just got annihilated .But you might have a good car once you address this problem.I think I have a Blown Head Gasket, but I am still not sure...can someone help me out?if the exhaust has a slightly sweet smell to it, then yes, your coolant is getting into the combustion chamber, and yes that certainly could mean a head gasket.
