How much should a head gasket replacement cost?

1997 Olds Cutlass...has been having overheating issues...already changed the water pump and the thermostat and the problem persisted. Finally went to a garage to have it checked. The first place was a little local garage that offered a free inspection and after 20 minutes they came back and told me it was the ETC sensor that was causing my fans not to operate properly and that was the only problem. Said it would be $150 and all my problems would be solved. Having my doubts, I went to the large corporate repair facility (non-dealer) and paid $42 for a full diagnostic of the cooling system and components. After and hour they came back and said the head gasket was bad. They then told me it would cost $1,600 to repair. Is that even close to accurate or am I being taken?How much should a head gasket replacement cost?it is a V6, and it has two heads.no you are not being taken, for the heads will need to be freshened up(valve job) and surfaced which most shops do not do this they send them to a machinist

you need to have a list of all the things they are replacing, machine work cannot be determined as to the extent until they remove the heads and the machinist does their check on the heads, so I would ask them what all the job the 1600 covers, cause it might also go up

they are estimating that your heads are not cracked for determining this is done on aluminum heads with a dye check, and cannot be done until they are removed.
