Has anyone ever heard of having to drop the engine to change head gaskets in a 4.6 Northstar engine? It's in a 1999 Cadillac Deville. I've always known head gaskets to be accessible by taking apart the engine from the top down, but I've never done a Northstar. (The car is not mine and I do know how notorious Northstars are for head gaskets so don't leave any smart comments.) Thanks.Changing head gaskets?Yes you have to drop engine , just as easy you might as well drop all the way, the timechain cover takes up complete side of engine and if you really have head gasket problem then you most likely have broken headbolts or stripped out head bolt holes in block, real big projectChanging head gaskets? Here are the instructions from Aotozone.com. http://www.autozone.com/addVehicleId,2525301/initialAction,repairGuide/shopping/repairGuide.htm?pageId=0900c152800a57fd
They do not say anything about removing engine. Good luck.Changing head gaskets?Yes, you should drop the engine cradle and all.Changing head gaskets? You don't have to,but if you ever got the chance to do head gaskets in the car, nows the time.I recommend leaving it to the professionals. At my dealership,we have a special cradle with caster wheels to remove the front subframe, engine, trans, as a unit which holds the engine at the right height to work on it.Also,if your going to waste your money on a northstar, you should have the bottom end resealed because they all leak oil.

How much would it cost to get a head gasket changed in a 94 chevy pick up with a 350?
With the gasket and the labor shoot for around $250-300How much would it cost to get a head gasket changed in a 94 chevy pick up with a 350?Depends on who does it. A real shop could get i done in four hours for about $400 total. A half-assed shop will soak you for twice that.bitting their nails working on nail fungus
About the head gasket?
Based on the answers I got, i have checked and found that there are no leaks, the oil looks congealed. How much would it cost to get a head gasket changed? I am now certain that water is leaking into the engine.About the head gasket? It depends on the car and on the mechanic. The gasket itself is not that expensive, probably around $30-$60. But it may take a while to get to it, and there are other gaskets that may need to be replaced (like the valve cover gasket). However, if you are ok with wrenches, nuts, and bolts, you could do it yourself. Most cars don't require that you remove the engine, and it shouldn't take more than 3 hours even if you're inexperienced. If you consider doing it yourself, I would recommend getting a repair book for your car and studying all the diagrams. Also, buy all the gaskets you may need to replace--I wouldn't recommend using liquid gasket--and get the best gasket dressings/sealants you can find.
Now, the really important part for do-it-yourself is to get a torque wrench and make sure that you tighten everything properly. The repair book diagrams usually indicate proper torque settings for every nut and bolt--make sure to follow these. Mechanics, especially cheaper ones, tend to use regular hand/power tools instead of proper torque wrenches and they overtighten most everything from wheels to spark plugs to engine parts. That may not be problematic right away, but it will be down the road in several years. When it comes to engines, overtightening damages gaskets (especially those made from liquid gasket or those that were put on without proper gasket dressing by incompetent mechanics) that results in oil leaks in a couple years.About the head gasket?Probably 200-400 depending on the make/model etc. It's expensive as the head is usually skimmed to ensure a perfect fit on the replacement gasket.
Or if you want the cheap and cheerfull you could risk without the skim, but always a chance you might do some major damage to your car, and most garages will not recommend it.About the head gasket?i had oil leaks in my car and first mechanic said it might need a new head gasket and could cost between $1500-$1800. so i took my car to another place and they said all it needs is new o-rings and not the head gasket which was about $140.About the head gasket?Hi Dale
My MkIV Zephyr had that problem too. It's way cheaper to buy a whole new car. Trust me, I found out the hard way. Even if your car is really new, like so new that it's only 'just' come off warranty (usually the exact time the head gasket blows) - it is still cheaper just to go buy another car.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but im just being honest. I almost cried when I found out too.About the head gasket?i would like to assist you in your plight.is it a petrol or diesel. what make?.as for the price i would say at least 150.About the head gasket?Dale, It's important to have the cylinder head checked for flatness while it's off the car. If it's out of flat it should be machined at an automotive machine shop.
If a warped cylinder head with a new head gasket is placed on the block and bolted on the same thing is going to happen again sooner or later.
As you can see the price will vary. Typically a machine shop will charge between $100.00- $150.00. for truing up a cylinder head.About the head gasket?first that would depend on what car, the more complex the more expencive , depending on which car anything from 200 to 2000

Is there another name for the head gasket on a car?
hi, i'm going to attempt changing the head gaskets on my 1992 olds cultass supreme SL 3.1 L V6. I bought the correct Haynes repair manual for my car, but I can't seem to find where it shows step by step how to change the head gasket. I looked in the index, and its not even mentioned there. I was just wondering if there's another name for the head gasket. I was thinking it might be the intake gasket? Is there another name for the head gasket on a car?The tech name for it is the cylinder head gasket
The intake gasket is not the same thing as head gasket.
Look in the engine repair part of book, and the engine overhaul part of book to find info on how to change itIs there another name for the head gasket on a car?Ccnp Tutorials
http://ccnptutorials.info/Is there another name for the head gasket on a car?intake is top of motor before heads and far has i know only one name but might call it cylinder head gasket other than head gasketIs there another name for the head gasket on a car?I've got several Haynes manuals, and they just seem to get you in trouble. Go to the engine section, and check where they are re-assembling the engine. Should mention about head gaskets, and there will be torque values there also.Is there another name for the head gasket on a car?Forget doing it yourself. If you don't know what needs to be done even looking in a manual, then how did you decide the gaskets need changing?
You won't be likely to have the right tools, either....

Changing head gaskets on a gmc v8?
how long will it take to change head gaskets on a 99 gmc yukon with a 5.7L vortec v8? Changing head gaskets on a gmc v8?A 99 is very clean under the hood, I could do it in 3 hours. If you have never done it before get a manual, read it carefully so you can make sure you have everything you need (straight edge, torque wrench, ect..) and a Saturday should be sufficient.
Good Luck!Changing head gaskets on a gmc v8?4 to 6 hours realisticly....by a proChanging head gaskets on a gmc v8?You alone a few days,-week...You and a Friend a couple days...lots of removal and put back...at a shop, a lot of money and a couple days too...
best wishes
[in my opinion]Changing head gaskets on a gmc v8?if you pull the heads off that one you also need to take them and have them checked for hair line cracks and warp-age in them, i see a lot of those with small cracks in them from getting hot, ordinary time on that one would be about 6-8 hours on doing this providing you have the heads already done, and that's cleaning everything back up really good,do your self a big favor though and steam clean the engine off before you start on it ,this makes it a lot easier to work on,good luck with it,don't get in a hurry on this one,if it takes two days take your time with it,its better to have done it right the first time than to have to do it over again,i learned that from experience, good luck.

How much to get a head gasket changed?
on a beretta??? and how much would it cost to get a basic paint(just like black or blue) done?? im lookin to repair a car and need some prices. thanks. How much to get a head gasket changed?v6? about 950.00 to 1000.00 all depend if heads are still good and not warped or cracked.
try macco probaly aroun 299.00 to 400.00 basic paint. How much to get a head gasket changed?I agree with the ASE MASTER TECH above, however:
When you replace your head gaskets, the compression in your motor will dramatically increase...which will probably blow out your piston rings and/or crankshaft bearings, main seals, etc, etc. ...... Plus your entire cooling system is probably full of a greasy sludge.
Once you need new head gaskets, there are probably many other weak links which also need to be looked over.a scottish name How do you make a quilt
