How much should a head gasket replacement cost?

1997 Olds Cutlass...has been having overheating issues...already changed the water pump and the thermostat and the problem persisted. Finally went to a garage to have it checked. The first place was a little local garage that offered a free inspection and after 20 minutes they came back and told me it was the ETC sensor that was causing my fans not to operate properly and that was the only problem. Said it would be $150 and all my problems would be solved. Having my doubts, I went to the large corporate repair facility (non-dealer) and paid $42 for a full diagnostic of the cooling system and components. After and hour they came back and said the head gasket was bad. They then told me it would cost $1,600 to repair. Is that even close to accurate or am I being taken? How much should a head gasket replacement cost?it is a V6, and it has two heads.no you are not being taken, for the heads will need to be freshened up(valve job) and surfaced which most shops do not do this they send them to a machinist

then you have parts and labor to do this

you need to have a list of all the things they are replacing, machine work cannot be determined as to the extent until they remove the heads and the machinist does their check on the heads, so I would ask them what all the job the 1600 covers, cause it might also go up

they are estimating that your heads are not cracked for determining this is done on aluminum heads with a dye check, and cannot be done until they are removed.

also ask about warrantyHow much should a head gasket replacement cost?do you have water in your oil ?, are you losing antifreeze and having to fill the radiator and not seeing antifreeze on the ground anyplace?,check the dipstick and see if the oil looks milky and if it does you have a bad head gasket and if not I would say the sensor on the fans is the problem. How much should a head gasket replacement cost? Not willing to risk 150 but think the other guys were more professional in their diagnosis. Why did you not trust the first shop's diagnosis? You have to trust someone. How much should a head gasket replacement cost?no dint think your being taking for a ride for you dint have the tools that cost quite a bit to buy and the education for doing the job once thy get it apart hoe fully thy will check the head for cracks as wall and put the car back into working order if the head is cracked the price will go up for your paying some one Else for Thes services and thy need to eat also

  • How bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket?

I have a 98 Camry with over 220k miles and it still runs runs strong. I've never had any major repairs to it, other than the routine breaks, timing belt, tune up etc. However, I recently got my oil changed and the guy said I have a leak or a crack on the seal of my head gasket. He said it was small, but can get bad.

I have been smelling more burnt oil coming from my hood lately, so I'm assuming it's from the leak. I'm going to buy a new car soon so I don't want to put much money into this car if I don't have to.

So with that said, about how much would it cost to repair it and about how long do I have if I don't repair it before it completely ruins my engine? Thanks guysHow bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket?if they told you that at a jiffy lube i would guess that you have valve cover gasket leaking not head gasket as i dont know how they would know head gasket is leaking but could visually determine a valve cover gasket that would leak oil on the engine pretty simple to repair or tighten head gaskets are a whole other story just had head gaskets replaced under warrenty on 06 f-350 6200 dollars had to jack cab of truck up just to get to themHow bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket? We'll if you dont want to put much money into the car then your best bet is to just hurry up and buy something else..a head gasket could go as much as 800 or more in a shop to have replaced and if they find the head itself is cracked u can double or tripple that...sry for the bad news..How bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket?Bad your anti freeze will start pouring out after you shut it off and if you check your oil you will find that its mixed. If you take off your oil cap look inside the cap you will find white creamy stuff inside the cap this is a sign of head gaskets.I paid about 550 for mine to be done. How bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket?Leave it alone, dont put money into something you are going to get rid of in due time and it sounds like you are going to do this very soon, it sounds as though it is simply an oil gally that is leaking probably on the corner of the cylinder head. You need to watch the oil in it, so you dont run the riisk of blowing the motor because you ran it dry from oil lacking. I the past i have taken the cylinder head and tightened it a few more poubds of tourque to seal the gasket temporarily you could try this or throw in some bg stop oil leak. But camrys are good cars drive it till you trade it, and my recommendation would be to get another toyota product they are well, worth the monetyHow bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket? The problem is the same as trying to know the day you die -- you don't know. If the leak gets worse and water pours into your oil (creating a non-lubricating emulsion), there goes your engine -- or at least some or all the piston-rod bearings in the crank case.

So, how much will your present car be worth as a trade-in without an engine? Your call. How bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket?A head gasket seal takes about a half hour to replace and if you do it yourself shouldn't cost more than $20. You just have to remove the head cover, take off the old gasket and put a new one on, nothing to it.How bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket?I highly suggest that you take the car somewhere else to get a second opinion. Especially if you got your oil changed at an %26quot;oil change only%26quot; shop like Jiffy Lube or Express Lube. Never ever trust the judgement of the employees at those types of places because they're not qualified to do or suggest anything besides an oil change. How bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket?what this means is your car has cylinders, usually 4, 6, 8 and 12. these fill with air, fuel is squirted in and the spark plug ignites and the cylinder is blasted down for 1 full rotation where it fill again with air. and so forth. On the other side of the cylinder oil lubricates the cylinder head to smoothly glide it up and down. the oil and gasoline are separated by a gasket. (rubber seal if you will). Now you have a cracked seal, so oil is leaking into the cylinder and deluding the gas, and burning the oil. Your exhaust should be a tint of blue. Indicating your burning oil. The car will burn and use up oil so check your fluid level. the engine will need to be broken down and opened to get to the head to replace the seal. This will cost a bit. It will depend on what location you live in to how much it will cost. in my location i estimate $250-300

if your heads are leaking coolant you have a different problem.

check your coolant levels are they going down?

then check the spark plugs do they have oil on them?

this should narrow down your problemHow bad is a cracked seal on a head gasket?Well im not sure of the cost but if you don't Anti freeze will leak into your oil and seize the motor, and before that you will consume A tot of oil. If you are planning on keeping the car or trading it in I think you should change it

Is the "Water Jacket" on an Engine ONLY in the Head, or does it go all the way down through the Block?

Someone suggested i may have a %26quot;Cracked Water Jacket.%26quot; I always though ti just had a blown head Gasket, and i thought i had it Sealed once.. until my Intake Manifold (most likely) blew (Weird.) So i think im gonna get a new head, since the Head Gasket has to get changed anyway (Ill get a Fel Pro.)

Does the %26quot;Water Jacket%26quot; go down through the Block, as i think im gonna get a new Head, but i wonder how accurate that may have been?

Ive always had a very Pressurized Cooling System since the Head Gasket has been %26quot;Blown,%26quot; Ive smelled the Gas and seen it out the Expansion Tank.Is the %26quot;Water Jacket%26quot; on an Engine ONLY in the Head, or does it go all the way down through the Block?Hello that is a good answer, any part of the Eng. that exchanges heat needs water such as the heads and block. The water ports around the cylinder head keeping the valves at a stable temperature other wise the pressed valve seats on a aluminum head would fall out due to uncontrollable temperatures. And the same for the block or it can crack the cylinder walls. But more then likely would cause heat seize first. This is caused when the pistons can no longer transfer heat through the walls and then they lock up or seize.

As any thing in automotive the first thing to go is the week link.. That would be that head would warp then blow out the gaskets. And the same to the intake manifold as water does transfer through it as well. And this may be your only problem that is much easier to repair then a head.Is the %26quot;Water Jacket%26quot; on an Engine ONLY in the Head, or does it go all the way down through the Block?goes into the block around all cylindersIs the %26quot;Water Jacket%26quot; on an Engine ONLY in the Head, or does it go all the way down through the Block? The %26quot;water jackets%26quot; are part of the head castings, the block and often times the intake manifold also. The %26quot;freeze plugs%26quot; (actually casting plugs) that you see on the side(s) of your block and often on the back of the head(s) actually seal the water jackets in the block and head.

It is far, far more common on the vast majority of engines to have a failed gasket rather than a cracked block or head.

White smoke - how likely is it that the problem is a cracked head gasket?

I found a 1991 Honda Civic on Craigslist for $350 that needs a little TLC. I am not a mechanic, but I can follow instructions fine. Using a maintenance manual, I've successfully changed the timing belt, water pump, brakes and bearings in my old 85 Honda Accord. I assume I could do the same for a head gasket. Please correct me if you think I don't know what I'd be getting myself into.

My problem is knowing if the head gasket really is the problem, or if it is too risky of a gamble to buy this car. This is what the person selling the car has to say about it in the ad:

    %26quot;runs good but needs a head gasket because there is white smoke coming out the exhaust (no oil and water mix I can see though). Passed Colorado emissions this year before the gasket blew. 200k miles, almost new tires, pretty good interior and good body.%26quot;

    So here are my questions:

    1. How likely is it that the problem really is a cracked head gasket?

    2. What do I look for to confirm or uncomfirm this diagnosis?

    3. If the head gasket really is cracked or blown, is it likely that it has caused other engine damage? 4. Is there anything I should look for assuming something else might be the cause?White smoke - how likely is it that the problem is a cracked head gasket?Because there is no way to determine the nature of the cause of the leak, it require disassembly and evaluation. You can determine which cylinder it is leaking into by removing the spark plugs and pressurising the cooling system. the fluid will seep into the cylinder within a few minutes and then you can crank the engine and observe which cylinder throws the fluid out of the spark plug hole. Now is it a bad head gasket, cracked head or warped head that requires resurfacing? Once the head is off, straight edge the surface with a known true straight edge= machine flat stock bar of steel. If the surface exceeds .006 of true flat, it needs to be resurfaced. The cylinder that threw the fluid is now of great concern, check that cylinder head area for cracks and distortions. Remember, this is a high mileage engine and when you put it back together, adjusting the valves is very important. Good Luck

You want to know if it is safe to drive it 10 miles. Lets say you have a savable condition now, question is will you still have it in ten more miles. Your gambling, how lucky do you feel?White smoke - how likely is it that the problem is a cracked head gasket?well I had the same problem in a honda that i bought. The oil and coolant were mixing and my mechanic went to autozone and bought this sealant in a silver bottle it cost about 30.00 and I havent had a problem since that has been almost a year ago. He flushed all the fluids in my car and shes been great!White smoke - how likely is it that the problem is a cracked head gasket?smarter never to buy a used car that cant drive or needs work since you never know what it might need so that 350 buck car might cost you 3000 to repair smarter to keep looking wouldnt buy it but you can smell coolant or oil an dknow which it is right away still not a great deal would pass on it they should pay you to take itWhite smoke - how likely is it that the problem is a cracked head gasket?White smoke, head gasket. Do a compression test on all cylinders and you'll see a big difference on a couple of them. Overheating problems could be, hoses, radiator, valves.White smoke - how likely is it that the problem is a cracked head gasket? If you can see the car when the engine is cold, you can confidence test it yourself in a minute or so.

Remove the pressure cap and start the engine. Put the palm of your hand over the radiator neck where the cap was and pinch closed the hose going to the reservoir. If you feel steadily rising pressure within 3-5 seconds the head gasket is bad... the quicker you feel the pressure the worse it is. If there is no identifiable pressure rise in 5 seconds the white smoke is not from a bad head gasket or cracked head. I have never known this test to give false results when coolant/combustion chamber failure (the most common type of head gasket failure) is suspected.White smoke - how likely is it that the problem is a cracked head gasket?look the simplest way is to stand near the exhaust,if you get a sweet smell,or taste on your lips its antifreeze.if there is no antifreeze in it, then it wont be sweet.as for head gasket, its a crap shoot wether its block, head or gasket,or something simpler like a water line running thru the intakeaftermarket for honda is plentiful and cheap these days.you can buy a new tranny for less than having 1 rebuilt if you know where to look.White smoke - how likely is it that the problem is a cracked head gasket? The car definitely has a serious problem, but determining if it's a head gasket will require disassembly. But there are a couple tests you can do to verify that the head and/or gasket are the problem. You could do a compression test on all cylinders and compair your results. Standard is 10% difference, any more or less indicates a problem. You can also do a cylinder lean down test or a coolant system pressure test, to see how fast pressure bleeds off. This can tell you how bad the problem is. The faster it bleeds down the worse the condition. It sounds like most of the leakage is into the cylinders not the crank case. You may foul a spark plug or two, and the coolant can damage the packing inside the catalytic converter. If you do decide to take on this project, take your time, mark your connections, and do not reuse those head bolts. New bolts will need to be purchased and installed to do this job correctly. Hope this helps, ChrisWhite smoke - how likely is it that the problem is a cracked head gasket? It is probably safe to drive the ten miles to a mechanic.

    1. It very well could be a blown head gasket. It could also be a fuel problem.

    2. A compression test will tell you if one (or more) cylinder has less compression than the others, After the compression test, a leak down test will tell you if the cylinders are holding compression, and if not where they are leaking. If the leak can be heard in the exhaust pipe or intake, it's the valves. If it can be heard in the crankcase, it's the rings. If it can be heard bubbling into the coolant, it's a blown gasket or cracked head/block.

Another test is a combustion gas check on the radiator. It uses a clear tube fitted into the radiator

cap and the air over the coolant is bubbled through a test fluid. If the fluid turns color, then combustion gas is leaking into the coolant, indicating a blown head gasket.

    3. If it is a head gasket, and there is no oil in the coolant, or coolant in the oil, it probably hasn't caused other damage. This is a high mileage engine, and you can expect more work than just the gasket. Look at a used engine, they are sometimes cheaper than rebuilding an engine.

As for other causes, check the fuel system, it could be the cause of the white smoke, but since it passed emissions, I doubt it.

Do I have a blown head gasket?

Okay, I have an rb25det engine and there is a little oil and water mix and a bunch of smoke coming out of the oil filler and breather hoses (I want to say it's white smoke but I don't want to rule out blue smoke). The exhaust SEEMS fine. Very little smoke so I think its normal. A LITTLE water is collecting in the exhaust. I did a compression test and cylinders 5 and 6 have way low compression. I just recently changed the radiator fluid and it is now dark brown. It really doesn't smell like anything in my opinion. Is this a blown head gasket? Or could it be rings or valves? I feel like it's a head gasket since its two cylinders right next to each other having problems, but i'm no mechanic. Also there is oil on the side of the engine on the exhaust side right underneath #5 and #6. Should I do a leak down test? Should I put a little oil in the cylinder and try the compression test again? How much oil should i use? Thanks so much, any help is a big help.Do I have a blown head gasket?5 and #6 low compression readings on an inline 6 points to a faulty head gasket. Try this. Open the radiator cap and then crank the engine. If coolant sprays up like a fountain from the radiator, it's a head gasket problem. This test only work sometimes depending on how bad the problem is.Do I have a blown head gasket?Water doesn't always spray out of the radiator cap opening if you have a leaking head gasket. With the radiator cap removed and the coolant level full, start and let the engine run for a while. If you notice bubbles coming out of the radiator filler neck this can also indicate a bad head gasket. Has the engine been extremely hot recently? Another possibility is that you could have a cracked cylinder head or a crack in the cylinder block between cylinders 5 and 6. If you get to the point where you coolant leaking into one of the cylinders and you attempt to start the engine the water in the cylinder will not compress the way the air fuel mixture does. I have known plenty of people who had cases where water entered the actual cylinder and when they went to start the vehicle the water would not compress and it ended up bending a piston connecting rod and eventually breaking a piston.Do I have a blown head gasket?Change gaskets,if it has oil in the water it's gone.Do I have a blown head gasket?Loss of compression in adjacent cylinders is usually a head gasket. It is possible to have a head gasket blow only between the oil and coolant passages and not be blown bad around the cylinders, meaning you would have oil and water mixing but no smoke. Dark brown radiator fluid would be enough to convince me its a blown head gasket. Is the oil a chocolate milky color?

Bad rings would most likely cause blue smoke. Bad/burnt/dirty/sticky valves could cause your compression problem, but wouldnt cause the brown coolant. If you want to do a compression test, use about a teaspoon to a tablespoon of oil in the spark plug hole and see if the compression rises significantly.

How do you know if you have a blown head gasket 97 lt1 camaro?

it is a 97 lt1 camao, Ive noticed that in the morning the temp is at 180 but in the afternoon it goes to 210 sometimes to the 3/4 marker, i changed the waterpump, stat, coolant, did the air bleed, fans are on directly, and just did a coolant flush and removed debree, I also have a transmission cooler in front of the radiation but its been there for two years, i noticed the problem about three months ago. I changed the water pump this past week same thing happens, might think that its a blown head gasket but there is no water in the oil or white smoke. How do you know if you have a blown head gasket 97 lt1 camaro?I wouldn't worry about 210. have you thought you might have a bad sensor? I doubt very much that you have a blown head gasket. If you bought a 195 stat you should read between 200 %26amp; 210.How do you know if you have a blown head gasket 97 lt1 camaro?I think a bad head gasket would mean oil or water in the exhaust, white or gray smoke. Also you would be losing oil or water levels. Try a compression check. How do you know if you have a blown head gasket 97 lt1 camaro?Check for water coming from your exhaust pipe. Look for gas bubbles in the radiator when the engine is running. Check the real temperature of the coolant, the Gage may be in error. Do a compression test. How do you know if you have a blown head gasket 97 lt1 camaro?210 is fine on an LT1. On my Northstar seville, the fans don't even kick on till 225. You will know if you have a blown head gasket. White smoke will POUR out the tail pipe and it will be missing like crazy. Only be concerned if antifreeze is vanishing out of the car.How do you know if you have a blown head gasket 97 lt1 camaro?check under your car lay under front bumper and look up at front of radiator you could have a plastic bag up there or something thats what was wrong with mine

    Head gasket/block issue, 1999 blazer?

So I purchased a 1999 chevy blazer a few weeks ago with about 130,000 miles. I looked over the vehicle, and everything seemed to check out. I changed the oil, did this did that and everything was good, car ran fine etc etc. Today I noticed the truck seemed to be running rough and a little hot. Also my oil pressure was a bit higher than usual. I drove it home after work, and checked the oil and to my horror..it is milky and the antifreeze is LOW....damnit. My question is, how likely is it that I just need to replace the intake gasket or head gasket? I'd prefer the intake, but the head is duable. BUT it is the cracked block/head that I'm afraid of. Is there anyone else with a similar experience with this specific engine? (4.3L v6) I just want to know what others have had issues with and my chances it is just a gasket. Also the oil on the dipstick was way high..about half way up the stick. Needless to say, I wont be driving it anytime soon. Is it rare for this to happen so quickly and without warning? I never let the vehicle over heat..and I'm wondering if the previous owner put a sealer in the antifreeze to cover up HIS mistake. Thanks! P.S. Please do not say %26quot;you're screwed%26quot; or %26quot;get a new engine%26quot; because I know what I'll have to do..and I'm a little mad at the situation..especially since I've had the thing for only 3 weeks.Head gasket/block issue, 1999 blazer?before panic , need to find out about head or gasket . I suggest you find a good mechanic and have him run a block test . There are a couple of test to determine that . The test probably will not tell you which one is leaking , but at least you will know if there is one .Head gasket/block issue, 1999 blazer?if it turns out to be a serious problem, take it back from where you got it,

it could be that you've a cracked radiator or a loose hose in the engine somewhere and the coolant has ran out making the engine hotter than it should be, sometimes oil is milky when it is hot, my great uncles lawnmower engine had milky oil in it when he had just used it...

take it to a mechanic, it its a big problem take it back from where you got it, if you've had it less than a month you should be able to take it back...

Good luck hope its nothing serious...Head gasket/block issue, 1999 blazer?try replacing the water pump that may fix it but if it does it may only be a temporary fix you probably are getting antifreeze in your oil which means your engine has a hole in it which is letting the antifreeze leak into the oil pan

How do you adjust the rockerarm on a 72 302 ford V-8?

So I have a 72 302 in a 66 coupe. Head gasket went bad so I changed it.

I Took the heads to a machine shop and they mag tested and looked fine to him. He did say that there was some wierd 2 bolt and washer system to make the rocker arms adjustable. I asked if I had to have the adjusable ones (since they are not stock) and he said that the previous owner (not the best mechanic I've come to find out because of other problems I've had) might have some weird camshaft that needs adjustable rocker arms.

I asked what I should do and he sold me some nuts with set screws on the top to lock them in.

He said to adjust them just wait till they stop clicking and then go a 1/2 turn more (while running).

I think I went to tight because the engine stopped running. I read another post just now that said I might have damaged the valves. What to do what to do???

Please help me adjust my rocker arms. How do you adjust the rockerarm on a 72 302 ford V-8?if you have adjustable rockers then you went to far. back all the rockers off one turn and start over, the set screws are there to lock the adjusting nut into place. the adjustment procedure he gave you is correct for a hydraulic cam but i wonder if you have a mechanical cam and not a hydraulic cam. mechanical cams have to be cold when adjusted and you need to use a feeler gauge. if you have a mechanical cam then the way you adjusted the rockers will cause the vehicle not to run. the only way i know how to tell is by looking at a lifter or getting the numbers off the cam and calling the manufacture. good luckHow do you adjust the rockerarm on a 72 302 ford V-8?You didn't damage the valves, just collapsed the lifters. Just readjust and only turn a quarter turn. Difficulty of replacing a head gasket on a chevy s10?

'95 S-10, 2.2 I4, 5 spd, 4x2 with NO AC. There is a small chance that my head gasket is leaking, I will be running the compression test tomorrow to find out for sure but was wondering how difficult is it for DIY and a few friends. Since there is no AC, alot of hoses are eliminated. I feel that once I remove the air intake assembly, radiator and all the belt accesories that it will be a straight forward job.I will have access to a warm garage with power tools for a week. I think that once all those things are removed that it should be a fairly straight forward job, am I wrong? Should I send the head to the machine shop, how much is the typical labor?

how long would such a job take an average person with experience to do?

I am not a certified mechanic or a tech with no schooling but I have done a lot of my own repairs and many for friends, from simple maintenance to changing the clutch and swapping out a turn key motor, I have done a valve gasket but never head gasket, anything to look out for%26gt;?Difficulty of replacing a head gasket on a chevy s10?looks like this is probably a steel or cast iron head so I think it would be a pretty straight forward job just remove everything and replace in the opposite order. once the head is removed though I would have it magnafluxed to make sure that it isn't cracked...it's not likely to be warped considering its not aluminum. check autozone.com for removal and installation procedure.Difficulty of replacing a head gasket on a chevy s10?Head gaskets should only take about 10 hours for someone that hasn't done it before. Some things you should watch out for is exhaust bolts will be hard to get out and could brake, check the book to see if you have to loostened in a spacific order, the head bolts will also have to be tightened in a spacific order and torque. For the exhaust bolts get a can of BP blaster and spray it all over all of the bolts the night before and the bolts should come right out. Unless you blew the head gasket by overheating the motor the head should not need to be machined.Difficulty of replacing a head gasket on a chevy s10?BHGs are a ****** man.. inlines arent to bad but they take a good 10-12 hours for mechanic to do.

only need the head machines if its warped,, valve gasket is a piece of cake compared to hgs..

and hoses, make sure u mark everything with tape and numbers when u take it all apart.

How can i fix a head blown gasket on a 2003 Nissan Xterra without taking it to a garage?

The car is overheating. I already changed the thermostat, water pump, radiator but was told it might be the head gasket.

I'm good with fixing cars, but I have never done a head gasket. How can i fix a head blown gasket on a 2003 Nissan Xterra without taking it to a garage? As weird as this sounds, it is not hard to replace one at all. The problem is time. It takes a while dude. Not like a week but give yourself a full day or more since you've never done this.

Basic stuff before you assume the gasket blew.

Is the car smoking WHITE out of the tailpipe? A blown head gasket allows coolant to get into the cylinder and burn. When white is coming out of the tailpipe, that's coolant. Blue = oil. Black = fuel.

Check that first at start up and when you are driving. If you see it, then yeah it looks like it. If not, check others.

Such as: What's your compression? A typical blown head gasket will lose compression is two adjacent cylinders. Example, number 3 %26amp;4, 5%26amp;6, 1%26amp;2 or anything next to each other. With compression, all of the cylinders should be within 15% of each other. Example: If the highest is 150 (don't know for your car - you can check with a compression tester), then your lowest one should not be more than 135. Do the math, I hate math but you need it with this stuff some time haha.

After exhaust smoke and compression, then check your oil. With a blown head gasket, you are getting coolant into the cylinder which can seap down into the crankcase and mix with your oil WHICH IS HORRIBLE FOR THE BEARINGS! If coolant and oil mix, your oil will look extremely bad! Chocolate milk looking. So if you look at your dipstick or cap or check your oil, then you can see.

After those three, then check your coolant. Are you losing coolant? If you are, bad thing bro. You should not be losing much at all if any. Check that for lowness (is that even a word?). If low, fill it up to the top. Then take the cap off and start the car. If it has bubbles in the radiator (the coolant is bubbly), then that is another sympton.

After that, check for regular things that can cause overheating. Blown hoses, leaking radiator, maybe the thermostat was installed incorrectly, the coolant is old/dirty or it is just low period. Check those. Simple stuff for checking.

You can check compression with a compression tester. Your local parts store will have one.

If the symptons I listed are there, then yes. Suspect the head gasket. Those symptons can also mean other things: Cracked block or cracked head. Unlikely, but I've seen it. So yeah, those are the things to check out.

When replacing it, follow your manual and go from there. I could give you an idea but I don't know your car exactly so I can't be sure. Just take your time, make sure you understand what parts the manual is saying and when you fix the gasket and all that, be sure you TORQUE THE HEAD BOLTS TO THE BLOCK IN THE CORRECT SEQUENCE AND AS TIGHT AS WHAT THE MANUAL CALLS FOR. It may be a good idea to buy new bolts too. Talk to your dealer. Make sure the gasket is set on there properly, enough sealant to hold it, and before you install the new gasket, be sure the old one is off completely and the block's surface is evenly aligned. Should not be a problem though.

But hey, you wanna check the other symptons I listed before going on and suspecting the gasket. Best of luck!

ADDED ON: First off, when was the last time you flushed your radiator or just replaced the coolant all together? Secondly, I take it that you have enough coolant to keep it cool if you noticed that you aren't losing any.

If you car is overheating, check these: Coolant, make sure it has enough and is the right coolant for your vehicle! Check with your local parts store to see. If it turns out you filled it with the wrong kind, then buy the kind your car takes and not the predeluted (sp?) type. Just get the kind with correct color and add 50/50. 50 %antifreeze to radiator, 50% water to radiator. What I do with that: 8 cups of antifreeze, then 8 cups of water and repeat until it's full.

Along with those suggestions, check to be sure your thermostat is installed correctly. After doing that, check these to be sure it's good: Your fans are spinning (working), your radiator hoses are good and that your water pump is functioning. Might have twisted something up in the installation. I have done it many times with many parts, but it happens.

So again, flush your system (new coolant - ask people at parts store), be sure your thermostat is working, be sure your fans are spinning, the radiator hoses and heater hoses are good, check your coolant sensor, and all those are how they are supposed be.

Shoot, I've seen cars that when you replace the coolant and fill up with new, the problem goes away. Good luck.

What I would start with: Open hood, start car and check to see if the fans are spinning. If they are, great. If not, there ya go. If they are, then you can move on.

Also, your timing may be off. Not usually if someone didn't touch anything regarding but if you messed with distributor or doing anything like that, it could be off. If you tried everything I listed and nothing helped, let me know and I will add on and try and get this solved. How can i fix a head blown gasket on a 2003 Nissan Xterra without taking it to a garage?AND WHEN YOUR DONE DOING THIS, YOU'LL NEVER WANT TO DO IT AGAIN. • Blown head gasket in 2005 nissa sentra??

I have a 2005 nissan sentra, 1.8s with 68,000 miles. i am getting a code for a misfire on cylinder 4, changed all 2 spark plugs still getting code. service department said its probably the head gasket, that its common in these cars?? how is that possible when its never overheated??

after the cars gotten cold when you first start it up it misses and idles high until it warms up, the service engine light is on and other than that it seems to be running fine.

i jus dont understand how a car with only 68000 miles just blows a head gasket for no apparent reason, plus i thought if your head gasket was blown your car would overheat and antifreeze would leak into the oil.? i jus dont understand, any one have any ideas.Blown head gasket in 2005 nissa sentra??try changing the spark plug wires then unhook your + cable for 2 minutes to reset the computerBlown head gasket in 2005 nissa sentra??Sounds more like a vacuum leak.

A compression test will let you know if it's the head gasket as the cylinder with the problem will have lower pressure than the rest. The oil/anti-freeze mix is common with a bad headgasket, but it the head gasket didn't go bad between those chambers they won't mix.

A cylinder compression tool typically run $25-$30 at a parts store. Just make sure you take the fuse out of the fuel pump motor so it doesn't inject fuel, and make sure you mark your spark plug wires so you can get them back to the right spot.Blown head gasket in 2005 nissa sentra??Are you lossing oil or anti-freeze.When it heats up in the morning does the heat gauge go almost into the red then it drops down have you loss power.these would be some signs of a bad head gasket.Put a compression tester on it and check the compression.usaully the motor will run worse when it warms up everything expands from the heat cracks get bigger etc.I would check in your ignition system uless you have the other problems I have mentioned.Things just go out there is no rime or reason.heres a saying%26quot;IF IT HAS BOOBS OR WHEELS IT WILL CAUSE YOU TROUBLE%26quot; GOOD LUCK PS had to use boobs instead of ????

1986 Honda CRX with blown head gasket. Help?

I was driving my CRX when she died on me. I got her to start again later, but ran extremely rough. After checking most things i found Oil in my coolant (radiator %26amp; Overflow) No coolant in my oil though. Automatically i'm thinking head gasket. I've worked on cars b4 doing small things (oil changes, plugs, wires, rotors, brakes, struts, water pump) How hard is it to do a head Gasket on 1986 CRX? Has anyone ever done one? Shes a cool little go kart of a car and does great on gas. Any advice/direction or comments would be appreciated. Thanks.1986 Honda CRX with blown head gasket. Help?the end is high.

Buy a Chilton service manual. (The pro book is a better buy, Even if it is over 50.00) The 14.00 book tends to leave some blanks that I don't like.

If you have done a water pump, then I think you will be able to handle a 4 cyl. head gasket, just follow the procedure in the manual and be sure to buy new bolts or studs before you torque the head back on.

(You may want to get the head checked for warp or small cracks) It is CHEAP INSURANCE!!!

How can you tell if it's a blown head gasket or the intake manifold?

I'm not sure witch iv got, I have heard that a bad intake gasket will do the same exact thing as a blown head gasket, that they will both mix coolant with oil, and I'm pretty sure I have coolant in my oil, on my dipstick it shows that I have a lot more oil than I should have and the last time I did a oil change I put the exact amount that I should put in, and also I can see like a green tint in the oil on the dipstick I rarely have started the truck up in the past two months but I'm looking to make it my daily driver. I already have my distributer off, intake manifold, TBI, and one side of my exausht manifolds. Before I go any further I wanted to know if anyone could tell if it is the intake manifold or a blown head gasket. My engine is a 350 small block, oh and my truck has been blowing a lot of white smoke out with water running out of the exuasht. Thanks and god bless. How can you tell if it's a blown head gasket or the intake manifold?more than likely on a 350 it's the head gasket, intake gaskets on the 350 seldom go bad.How can you tell if it's a blown head gasket or the intake manifold? Before you get too carried away did you have a cooling system pressure test done to see if you have internal or external coolant leaks? Small block Chevrolet engines aren't noted for head gasket problems unless the engine was badly overheated above 260 degrees.

Blown head gasket on car......how long will my car run, still runs good?

have a 96 mustang with a blown head gasket. it showed signs of it happening about two months ago with oil in the coolant. but not the check engine light is blinking and it is shaking horribly when its idle. the car still runs well when im going at a decent speed. the cheapest price i got to fix it was $1200 and the car is not worth that. could i maybe change the oil and the coolant and put some sealer in it to get a few more miles out of it? or is it just too late. any help or advice would be appreciated thanks.Blown head gasket on car......how long will my car run, still runs good?well , you could just do that .change the oil and coolant every week until you spend the total of what it would cost to fix.

also you could have a fouled spark plug. if you don't want to spend the money ,

just save the money and buy another one that you'll not mind spending money onBlown head gasket on car......how long will my car run, still runs good?Any answer as to how long this will continue to run is purely a guess. If the coolant is also mixing with the engine oil, it won't be too much longer.

I can tell you that I have never had any success, despite the outrageous claims on the labels, with any of the magic snake oil sealers available when it comes to a bad head gasket.Blown head gasket on car......how long will my car run, still runs good?Bottom line you need a new head gasket if you don't get it changed soon good bye engine because that white smoke indicates that your getting coolant in the cylinders and you have to be very careful with that because that will cause you engine to hdrolock which could cause bents rods and then you will have to either spend the money for to get the whole engine overhauled which will cost a lot more than 1200 bucks or a new car which again will cost more that 1200, and i have seen those sealer things cause more damage then fixing anything so i don't trust them, you would be better off to just get new gaskets seriously even if that means parking it till you get the money

Is my thermostat busted? Or is my head gasket blown? How can i tell?

This is kinda two questions in one.

    I have a 2002 Chrysler Sebring

I will give you the whole story....its kinda long

Bought the car and drove for a few months and it ran hot so i figured i needed more anti freeze. I went and got an oil change and got all fluids refilled. After a bout a week the car was running hot again (2nd time). By this time i knew i had a leak. I would keep antifreeze in the car but i still drove it for about 2 months because i didn't have any extra money to get it fixed. When anti freeze was low the heat would only work when i was moving. I went thru, i say about 10 bottles of anti freeze and the car did run hot 2 more times (4 times). I got the car checked (Pressure check) and they told me i needed a new Tstat, Tstat housing, Tstat Gasket, and Upper and Lower hoses. So just to try and save money i went and bought a Tstat and Tstat Gasket and replaced them myself. Refilled coolant and drove. That wasn't the problem. With the new Tstat and Gasket i was still leaking. I ran hot again with new Tstat (1st time with new Tstat). I went to get it checked again and they did a pressure check again and saw that i needed a new water pump and from leaking so much anti freeze i needed a new timing belt. I have gotten this done but the car will only blow hot air when moving still and i know i am VERY full of anti freeze and there is no leak anymore.

I have read that this can be because of a bad Tstat but i just replaced mine...but i did run hot once or twice with the new one....

I have also been told that it could be a bad head gasket...but would my car still be running normal with no problems if i had bad head gasket???

Please give me some good feedback. I just spent about 500 bucks getting the work done and i don't wanna just go in there again for something that's not gonna fix the problem with the heat.

Thanks in advance. Is my thermostat busted? Or is my head gasket blown? How can i tell?it doesn't sound like a bad head gasket. my money is on the new T stat is faulty. I have bought more brand new ones that were bad then good ones always check them before installing them.Is my thermostat busted? Or is my head gasket blown? How can i tell?if it was a bad head gasket

you would have coolant leaking into the oil

or oil leaking into the coolant

    so check your oil

if your thermostat was stuck open

your car wouldnt heat up properly, and would give out no heat

if the thermostat was stuck closed

the coolant wouldnt flow, and engine would overheat, and all the heat would be blocked so you would have no heat

    to test a thermostat

just put it in boiling water

if it opens up, its goodIs my thermostat busted? Or is my head gasket blown? How can i tell?the symptoms for a blown head gasket are,

oil filler cap has a white film on it

your car blows steam even after warmed up

your oil level rises as your coolant level drops.

the best way to test for a blown headgasket is to pressure test the cylinders and check the results

  • How do I get to this gasket to change it?

I've a '93 Lumina (3.1 V6), and the gasket on the top-side of my water-pump just s@^t the bed. Maybe the 'Thermostat Bypass... Valve... Gasket...' Anywho, I've gotten the gasket and the sealent; but me and my print manager (from my shop) were looking at it and the piece I'm going to have to move out of the way is welded to the block (or the head). It is the water line running from the waterpump, over the engine, and then is clamped to a rubber hose... How do I move that metal water line in order to lift the piece under which I need to put this gasket? Any tips/hints/tricks/dirtyjokes are appreciated! Thanks! How do I get to this gasket to change it?1 Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2 Remove the air cleaner assembly.

3 If necessary for access, remove the coolant recovery reservoir.

4 Partially drain the coolant, into a suitable container, to a level below the water pump.

5 If equipped, remove the serpentine belt guard/cover.

    6 Remove the serpentine belt.

7 Remove the retaining bolts, then remove the water pump pulley.

8 Unfasten the 5 water pump attaching bolts, then remove the water pump and gasket. Discard the gasket.

    To install:

9 Thoroughly clean the water pump mounting surfaces.

10 Position a new gasket, then install the water pump.

11 Install the attaching bolts and tighten them to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

12 Install the water pump pulley.

13 Install the serpentine belt and belt cover/guard (if equipped).

14 Refill the cooling system with the specified type and amount amount of engine coolant.

15 Install the air cleaner assembly.

16 Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine and check for coolant leaks.

Head Gasket question - ours has a crack?

I had asked earlier about an oil leak, now I have another question.

We've been leaking oil for awhile - car needs more oil about every month and a half, to two months. Not really sure where it's leaking from - somewhere in the front of the car. It's NOT the plug; oil change guy ruled that out the other day.

At our last 30,000 mile tune up (which was about 30,000 miles ago) the mechanic said we had a crack in our head gasket, but didn't need to be replaced right now. So I'm guessing that could be the cause of our oil leak? Haven't had any problems with the car overheating or anything...

Going to take car to mechanic here in the next couple of weeks to figure out exactly WHAT is causing the leak; will be mentioning our head gasket of course. Not sure exactly when they determine the thing would need replaced.

If it does need replaced, how much does that run? Also, what problems/symptoms can a cracked head gasket cause?

We have a 2000 Saturn with 120,000 miles on, if that matters at all (I don't know a lot about cars).

Trying to learn as much as possible before I take the car in. Head Gasket question - ours has a crack?is your car overheating? loosing coolant? is your oil milky colored? these are the signs of a head gasket or cracked head.....the oil may be dripping from a head gasket issue but that would be very unusual for the engine you have...either there's more to this story than you relayed to us or you need another mechanic....30,000 miles on a cracked head or bad gasket......i cant believe that...in 39 years of working on cars that would be a first time i have ever heard of any engine going that far with a serious issue like this.....seek out a profession, qualified mechanics advise ,before paying for any repairsHead Gasket question - ours has a crack?Oil can leak if the gasket has failed where oil is forced up to the cylinder head, Vauxhalls in the UK often develop this problem, as long as you keep an eye on the oil level and don't mind oil drips on your driveway it isn't a serious problem.

To cure this you will need to replace the gasket.Head Gasket question - ours has a crack?it could be like my car. mine leaks oil at the end of the intake gasket, around the rubber gasket.

How come there is a lot of white smoke coming out of my 1993 Ford Thunderbird exhaust pipe?

Does that mean there is possibly a broken seal or broken head gasket? My oil was changed today, and all levels of fluids are fine according to my indoor car computer. My husband put some fuel injection fluid into my gas tank today when I didn't have a full tank of fresh gas. Could that possibly be the reason? LindaHow come there is a lot of white smoke coming out of my 1993 Ford Thunderbird exhaust pipe?Does the smoke tail off after the truck has been driven a bit? Do you take a lot of short trips? Could possibly be condensation build up burning off..(happens with all the short trips). 1 sure way to find out is to do a Used oil analysis, which you can have done for about $22.

http://www.blackstone-labs.com/free-testHow come there is a lot of white smoke coming out of my 1993 Ford Thunderbird exhaust pipe? There are 2 possibilities. 1 is the valve seals are shot and need replaced or you can put a new head on the motor. 2 is the head gasket is going bad and anti-freeze is leaking into the oil or oil is leaking into the anti-freeze. Check your anti-freeze by taking the radiator cap off when car is not hot. If it isn't green and looks like a frappucino then you will know. Also check your oil dipstick, and see if the oil is clean. Fuel Injection cleaner could cause that, from cleaning all the dirt and filth out of your fuel system. If it goes away then you're fine. Still check your anti-freeze and oil just to be safe. How come there is a lot of white smoke coming out of my 1993 Ford Thunderbird exhaust pipe?White smoke from the tailpipe typically means coolant (antifreeze) is getting into the combustion cylinders, and fouling things a bit.

It's pretty serious, and not the cheapest thing to have fixed, but it's not impossible to do yourself with a few hand tools and a few hours.

The problem lies with the head gasket not sealing properly.

Either replace it, or have it replaced.

The Haynes manual is great for the pictures in there to give you the step by step on replacing the gasket yourself. How come there is a lot of white smoke coming out of my 1993 Ford Thunderbird exhaust pipe?Thunder birds are know to have head gasket problems and if its a 3.8 engine I feel very confident that thats what it is. Those were the worst engine ford ever put in their cars. I hope I am wrong, but that would be antifreeze coming out your tailpipe. If the exhaust fumes smell sweet then you know. How come there is a lot of white smoke coming out of my 1993 Ford Thunderbird exhaust pipe?white smoke could also mean the car is running rich, but this doesn't normally happen with todays computer fuel injected cars. better check the coolant.

Blown head gasket or head case?

I just bought a car (1996 Chevy Monte Carlo) and I was doing an oil change and saw that the oil is a creamy color (like coffee with creamer in it). I know enough to know that's not normal, so I asked the guy at the part store what it was. He said it was probably antifreeze/coolant that leaked into the block, which would mean either a blown head gasket, cracked head case, or a blown intake manifold gasket. He said to test is using a compression tester and it should point me to the right problem (and therefore to the right solution). Is this what I would need to do? If it's the head case, how much should something like that cost? I am really hoping its not the head case because I've heard it's really expensive...If it's the head gasket, it should be pretty easy to fix, but what if it's the intake manifold gasket? I looked the price on those and it ranges from about $45 to $90. How much work would it be to do that? I am really disappointed in myself for not checking this before I bought the car (I always do, but for some reason I didn't this time...) but it's too late now and I've got to get this thing fixed...Blown head gasket or head case?yes running a compression check will help you on that one and also you need to run a pressure test on the cooling system that will tell you if there's any leaks in to the cooling system and it may help explain why there's coolant in the oil both test need to be ran on it one test alone may not determine whats actually wrong with it,good luck.Blown head gasket or head case?usually this milk chocolate is caused by gm's notorious leaking intake gaskets if it was my car i would do the easy repair first then diagnose for any other problemsBlown head gasket or head case?Sounds like a blown head gasket but also it could be condensation in the oil pan, A head gasket replacement is usually around 1,000-1500 dollarsBlown head gasket or head case? With the chocolate milk looking type of oil, that means coolant and motor oil are being mixed. Usually caused by a head gasket. But simple tests: Number one, white smoke out of exhaust. number 2, overheating, and others are: low compression in two adjacent cylinder, bubbles in radiator, loss of power. But don't continue to drive it like this. That type of oil with water in it is horrible for the bearings and if it is driven, it'll be time for a rebuild. There are test to do, so check them. Good luck with it.Blown head gasket or head case?yes it does sound like a head gasket i would suggest You take it to your local mechanic just to make shore.

Ok, well i got an integra GSR with 118,000 miles. What is the best way to prevent head gasket failure? I use only the recommended coolant from honda and i change the oil every 3,000 miles with conventional oil (the guy who owned it b4 me always used regular oil so i think it would be bad for the motor to switch to synthetic at this point). How much longer should this head gasket last? Is 118,000 miles a lot for a head gasket?

Also, I want to know if I rev the motor around 6-7000 RPM between shifts on a semi-regular basis (only about half the time i drive) will this hurt the motor? It actually redlines at 8,000 RPM, but i rarely ever bring it up to the redline because im afraid ill miss a shift and over revv the motor. So, since it redlines at 8, would it be ok to regularly shift around 6-7000? VTEC kicks in at 4500 and again at i believe 6700 so makes leads me to believe that this motor is SUPPOSE to be shifted at higher RPM.

And finally, would an aftermarket header make any difference in torque or hp? I already have a skunk2 N1 full exhaust on it. I dont plan on changing out the air intake as i think the stock one is sufficient. So, would having just the a/m header and the exhaust make a difference that i could feel in performance?

Serious answers only please and preferably from people who know cars and work on them, thanks!MECHANICS HELP! Regarding my Integra: Questions about my Head Gasket, RPM, and Aftermarket Headers!!!?Ok, ill try to answer all of this. Yes, sick with conventional oil, it is bad to switch to full synthetic after about 75,000 miles. A head gasket should last at least 120,000, but more like 150,000 if the engine is taken care of. The revving the engine that high that often will definitely lower the life of that head gasket, as well as the engine in whole. You need to shift at more like 3000 RPM if you want your car to see high miles. The fuel you will save will also be well worth it. If you shift that high because Hondas have no power and you want to get places fast, well sorry you should have got something with a V-6 or V-8, not a Honda. The Variable valve timing is only for when you really need to get on it, you no passing a truck on the highway, getting onto the short freeway on ramp. You should never see those high of RPM's in regular daily driving. Yes a header will help, and you should at least get a high flow air filter.MECHANICS HELP! Regarding my Integra: Questions about my Head Gasket, RPM, and Aftermarket Headers!!!?driving constantly at 7k rpms will cause damage, your internals will eventually cook them selfs. why even drive that way normally? just because it redlines at 8k doesnt mean you should travel up to 7k to shift out, when your at wot or trying to race i see your point for for daily driving thats being a ricer to the fullest. i for one dont wanna hear your motor 2 miles away.

headers will basically do you no good. on a v8 it will do good, but a lonely 4 cyl or v6 its just a waste of money.

and your head gasket, is untelling. it can blow tonight, tomorrow or a year from now.MECHANICS HELP! Regarding my Integra: Questions about my Head Gasket, RPM, and Aftermarket Headers!!!?the best way to prevent head gasket failure is to baby it. taking it to 7k on a semi regular basis, just so you can hear vtec engage is not going easy on the motor. now it you had internal work to it....then no problem. and no.....vtec does not engage twice. what your hearing at 4500 is the secondary intake runners open up. then vtec engages at like 5700. and sorry to burst your bubble but no motor is SUPPOSE to be shifted at high rpm. you can, but the more you do it...the more your asking for trouble down the road.

aftermarket header time....and no. you might see a gain of like 7hp tops, besides that the best header you can put on it so it flows and gets maximum gain is the type r header, spoon header or a mugen header.... the only three that gets the maximum. the only way your going to feel the performance is by sticking some serious cash into the motor....stroker kit, cams, boost, increases the c/r and one of those.... a couple of things that do work very well on the gsr motors is the following.....

replace the dual stage intake manifold for a type r, or aftermarket intake manifold....

chip the ecu....required if you do the above

    motor loves boost

replace the head with a b16 head....

Serious answers only please and preferably from people who know cars and work on them, thanks.MECHANICS HELP! Regarding my Integra: Questions about my Head Gasket, RPM, and Aftermarket Headers!!!?if the engine is over heated there is a chance to blow a head gasket. that is usually the main cause of head gasket failure.

if a motor has some load on it it is OK to run up the rpm momentarily. the hard thing on a motor is to just hold those high rpm's with no load and just let it stay there

not sure about the headers, i know they help the engine breathe

If you own a 1992 4Runner, can you help me with something?

I just bought this 4runner off a guy, and he said that the head gasket has been changed, and water pump,he also said that it has a small oil leak, nothing major. But now it seems like it's leaking a lot of oil.The top of the motor is bone dry, it's leaking from the bottom.Could it just be the plug? Have you had any issues with your 4runner?and what was it,and how much did it cost to get it fixed? Thanks for your input. If you own a 1992 4Runner, can you help me with something? If it is leaking from near the middle of the engine then that could be your head gasket, although the previous owner said it was replaced, they could have messed up on the torque and cracked the new gasket. I have noticed that a lot of the V-6 engines leak from the front main seal around the crank (harmonic balancer). If the water pump has been replaced then you would hope they also replaced the timing belt and possibly the tensioner and idler with it bc they will wear out, there is also a seal in there that can go bad and leak down the inside of the belt cover making it look like the front seal is leaking but isnt. Deffinetly ask the prev. owner who and when the job was done and to the extent of the work was completed and replaced. If you own a 1992 4Runner, can you help me with something? It's leaking from the head gasket by the sounds of it. If you can, see if the seller can tell you where the head gasket was changed, and see if they can re-set it. If the water pump was also changed, see if the timing belt was changed at the same time (the belt runs the pump, and you pretty much have to open the engine case to get to that as well.

Try calling and asking a few national repair chains (ie. Midas, meineke) since these vehicles are definitely out of warranty, and they will have a repair guarantee. The price of any repair depends on where you live, and most important, the amount of time it took for the mechanics to fix the issue. If you own a 1992 4Runner, can you help me with something?Sounds like your pan gasket is leaking....Is it a 4 banger or a v6?The early 4 bangers had problems with the heads...The 6 bangers it was heads and gaskets...There has actually been a mandatory recall on all the v6 for the head gaskets...So if you call toyota and give them the vin# they will be able to tell you whats up with your truck...

    1994 Plymouth voyager 3.0 v6?

    1994 Plymouth voyager 3.0 v6

Someone tell me how this happened.

I was changing the head gaskets. So I set tdc and marked the distributor for #1.

When things go back together the timing is way out. So I put the timing light on looking to see

how close I am to tdc mark on crank and the mark is way down at about 4 o檆lock. There is not an obvious reason for this.

So I set the distributor to match the crank and it is running.

The crank did not shear the key. Nothing to explain this that I can see1994 Plymouth voyager 3.0 v6?Your 3.0 distributer cap is offset, take it off and look at the inside terminals, they cross over inside, so if you simply line up the rotor with the spark plug tower, you will be way off, set the engine to TDC, then find the correct position of number one and reroute all the plug wires, remember the firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6 . Hope this helps!1994 Plymouth voyager 3.0 v6?Common mistake, as with the vortec chevy motor and various other makes that reposition the spark towerrs to allow easier plug wire routing.

1994 Plymouth voyager 3.0 v6?You had the distributor one half turn off. Your distributor turns at one-half crankshaft speed.

It takes two complete revolutions of the crankshaft to complete the four-stroke cycle.

    intake-compression-power-exhaust.

Therefore, as you make a full 360 degree turn at the distributor, the crank has made 720 degrees, two full turns.

I find it easiest to check the cylinder directly opposite number one, if the valves ate both slightly open, then number one is on compression, the only point out of the 720 degrees that ignition should be allowed.1994 Plymouth voyager 3.0 v6?out side of the balancer has spun. common, if you put it back where you found it and it runs call it good the computer will take over from there. if you want to look at the keyway/timing mark on yours (clock position) and then head to the parts house and look at theirs you should find your answer. no big deal unless it comes apart, look at the belt tracking to see if it has moved out of alignment. Good Job and Good luck.

    Head Gasket seal???

i own a 1995 mitsubishi galant and i believe the head gasket seat in the engine might be broken because basically everything below that line is covered with oil...and i suppose it goes all the way down to the exhaust system because it burns the oil and smoke comes out the hood....could it be the head gasket seal?? it doesnt seem to lose much oil.... and IF SO.... how difficult would it be to change the seal in this particular car??? thanksHead Gasket seal???If your head gasket was blown you would have more problems than an external oil leak, i believe it may be a valve cover leak, or check the oil filler cap for leaks If your head gasket was blown you would experience overheating, oil in the radiator, or loss of water etc.Head Gasket seal???you might have a leak in the oil pan seal but more than likely it is your head gasket... they are all difficult to change out correctly, plus if this a head gasket issue you might to have you head machined back to factory specs.... if in doubt pay a mechanic to look at your car to find out exactly what is wrong with it!! Good luck!Head Gasket seal???It might just be the valve cover gasket that is leaking. If that is the case, it isn't that big of a job to replace. Check your oil. If it looks milky, that is a good sign that you have a blown head gasket or cracked head.Head Gasket seal???So the oil not coming from the valve cover. How hard is it depends on your experience on working on cars, this is a major task, you will need to know how to pull out a distributor and reinstall it and how to set timming also you will need to know how to adjust valves.Make sure when you have the head off you take it to a shop and have them inspect it.make sure you cover any port that you can drop a bolt, screw down,re install in reverse order GOOD LUCK

How reliable is Blue Devil for a blown head gasket?

I think there might be a blown head gasket. One guy I asked he said yes because last fall when he changed out my thermostat, he suspected a bad gasket. A guy that looked at it said he thought there was a crack in the intake manifold (?) and that Blue Devil would seal it up. Are head gaskets expensive to replace? If they are, is Blue Devil a good temp fix? If I use the Blue Devil, do you think it might last me for at least 4 months until I have the money to trade my car in? (it's an 04 Impala) It's not overheating per se, the gauge IS moving up past the halfway mark and there is water in the oil.How reliable is Blue Devil for a blown head gasket? There is no temp fix for a bad head gasket, gotta replace it. And don't try one of those 'Head Gasket in a Can' chemicals that you pour into the radiator, they'll just make things worse. The crack in the intake manifold...can you see it ?? Blue Devil could be some sort of epoxy that you mix-up and apply to the crack. It could possibly be a temp fix on the manifold, and could last the 4 months. To change the head gasket, you have to remove the intake manifold, so it could be replaced at the same time for no increase in labour, only parts. How reliable is Blue Devil for a blown head gasket? If you have water in the oil you have a cracked head or block or, most likely of all, as bad gasket. It costs a lot in labor and about $100 for the gaskets. I never heatrd of Blue Devil but I doubt it would work if there is water in the oil.How reliable is Blue Devil for a blown head gasket?I have no expierence with blue devil I have had good luck with liquid glass for cracks in heads manifolds and blocks, if you follow the instructions to the letter. I'm not sure about gaskets but I guess its worth a try as head gaskets are not fun and expensive to have someone else do it.

Head gasket dilema! will it be a hard job?

a garage has told me the head gasket on my fiat brava has gone caused by the waterpump failing, they also say that the timing belt and tensioners should also be changed with this and have quoted 670 if the head isnt warped. ok i have done many home diy projects but not on heads, how hard/time consuming will this be and will i need any specialist tools? i dont want to scrap the car but it is not worth paying nearly 700 quid. please help.

by the way yes i know what fiat stands for (fix it again tommorrow!)Head gasket dilema! will it be a hard job?Almost as bad as Found On Road Dead or Fix Or Repair Daily. Both long time acronyms for FORD used by old time Chevy guys. The biggest problem changing the head gasket is making sure the head isn't warped. You can always have an automotive machine shop check it for you after you remove it. You will need a torque wrench and a shop manual ( to get the torque specs from). Don't know about the UK but here the wrench can usually be rented. Other than that changing the head gasket isn't a very difficult job. Just make sure you drain the coolant first so it doesn't come pouring out into the cylinder bores when you remove the head bolts. Good Luck.Head gasket dilema! will it be a hard job?How familiar are you with motors? Its quite a task replacing the head gasket even with experience. With replacing the headgasket your essencially pulling off the entire top half of the engine and rebuilding it.

When you do this, your going to have to make sure your springs are good as well.

If your not very mechincally inclined I would highly recommend a shop to do it!Head gasket dilema! will it be a hard job?doing a diesel head isnt as simpl eor as easy as doing a petrol one.

and 700 is cheap. its a days work at 80 an hour, plus vat.

Head gasket dilema! will it be a hard job?It isnt an easy job.

Replacing the Timing belt is standard practice, and well worth doing.

You will need a Haynes manual for your car.

You'll also need, a good rachet with all size fittings.

Tourqe wrench, and any other tools required in the Haynes Manual.Head gasket dilema! will it be a hard job?It IS too easy to get this wrong, there are a dozen ways, if you are a 'virgin' at this. Even head-gasket jobs between differing cars can involve certain tricks the novice won't be aware of.

You can price all the gaskets, belt, tensioners and sundries you need. Get a Haynes manual, and see if you think you can do it. If you proceed, do so with a camcorder running, and give a commentary. Label EVERYTHING you remove! Have the head skimmed flat, this will be about 30pounds, 40 at most. Your key problem will be making sure that the engine is 'timed' correctly, to Top Dead Centre, as the workshop will do that with the head, to close all the valves. You might want to call a professional mobile mechanic to re-assemble, but you should be able to cut that 'frankly unreasonable' bill by a few hundred quid! You may need a special tool to lock the camshaft sprocket in place, but there is a chance you can hire this from a tool-hire centre.Head gasket dilema! will it be a hard job?any number of things can go wrong with this kind of repair. the worst of which would be putting it back together out of time. could make it un-runnable or even do some mechanical damage that is worse than the gasket.

do you have a friend that has done this before?Head gasket dilema! will it be a hard job?if you dont know how difficult the job is you wont be able to do it

you will make it worse than it is

changing the head gasket your playing with the timing and all sorts of things also as someone else said youll need loads of tools like a torque wrench and torque keysHead gasket dilema! will it be a hard job?get yourself a haynes work shop manaul and follow the instuctoins failing that hunt around and see if you can find some one a bit cheaper

    Blown Head Gasket?

How much extra oil does it take to blow a head gasket? I had my fixed, picked it up friday, took it to get an oil change and after about an hour it started jerking. When my boyfriend took out the spark plugs, there was one COVERED in oil. They said I was half a quart low, which I find hard to believe because a week before I had checked it and it was full, then they put 4.6 quarts in it. I have a 2001 dodge neon. Please help me.Blown Head Gasket? It is very unlikely you blew a head gasket. The first thing to happen after that would be coolant entering the cylinder which would smoke, but very unlikely oil. For a plug to be oil covered, you just about have to have a large hole in that piston, or maybe dropped a valve that ended up puncturing through the piston. Sorry, don't look good.Blown Head Gasket?well was the car smoking?

when you blow a head gasket it smokes white when you blow piston rings it burn black/blue that is how you sudden lose oil with out leaking it.Blown Head Gasket?take it back to the place that fixed it and show them the bad spark plug. probably installed head gasket wrong. sounds like you are getting a missfire on that cylinder and that would cause it to jerk. also make sure its oil and not gas; smell it, if its gas then it could be an ignition problem.Blown Head Gasket?Don't pull spark plugs. Check the dipstick. It sounds like the oil has been overfilled. Don't keep driving the car yet. Just drain the excess oil and your car will run fine. Don't let other bozos change your oil. Don't let your boyfriend jack with your car. Stop being girly and do your own maintenance. If you don't care to get under the car and get a little dirty, drain the oil with a filler tube siphon. Learn how to read a dipstick. That's where the term 'dipstick' came from. It's so easy, you have to be a dipstick to not know how to do it. Remember, 95% of your car's problems arise from the last bozo that worked on it.

Jss671, if you continue to let your current friends, boyfriends, or 'mechanics' mess with your car, than I will consider you an idiot. Otherwise, I think you are an honest girl trying to save her car, but is very frustrated and not too mechanically inclined. That's ok, continue reading. If you live in an apartment, generally they do not want people working on their cars. However, the process of draining some excess oil in you car is very simple and done in about 5 minutes without getting under the car.

You can get a dipstick siphon pump at any autoparts store, boat store (used for boat engines where you cannot get under the engine), or even Walmart. I believe they have them in their marine sections, auto sections, or RV sections. They are not expensive, around $20-$30. You insert the tube into the oil dipstick tube (take out the dipstick first). Then suck out the excess oil with the pump into a can. 5 minutes tops, no mess, no fuss. Good luck, and make sure your spark plugs are not loose. Try to wiggle them with your hand. If they wiggle, pull off the wire one at a time (don't mix them up), tighten the plug(s) with a socket wrench with a spark plug socket. Replace the wire.

Oh, its helicoil, not hemicoil. I know you have a Dodge, but they don't have HEMIcoils. A helicoil is a quick fix to stripped engine block threads. If your engine has helicoils, someone have been stripping the threads on your engine block. Whomever has been changing sparkplugs on your car has been destroying it. A car that is only 5 years old should not require helicoils. Nevertheless, this is the reason your spark plug flew out at your Mom. The helicoil may have failed. Yes, I read your other posting. Find an old guy (not a young one) to check your plugs.Blown Head Gasket?with the jerking you stated about your car aftre getting head gasket replaced sounds as if you may have a busted compression ring in one of those cylinders and this could be where the oil is coming from also if that head gasket was just replaced and nobody bothered to check for head warpage this is the reason for having that jerking come from your eng. this is a common problem with fly by night shops with your so called parts changers and not techniciansBlown Head Gasket?A busted head gasket will leak anti freeze not oil. Sounds like you either have a burnt piston or maybe your oil was just overfilled in which case it is trying to burn off and is burning through your spark plugs. Drain your oil and refill it to the proper requirements. You'll probably need to either replace your spark plugs at this time because they will have a carbon buildup from the oil they have burned. If the plugs don't have a carbon buildup then take them out and clean them in gasoline and scrub them with a wire brush then regap them and reinsert them. Be sure to take a rag and stick it in the plug hole to remove any existing oil first.Blown Head Gasket? The Oil Sounds About Right 4.5 Qts. Had A Problem With My 2001 Neon The Rear Seal Was Leaking Like Crazy Engine Would Jerk..So I Drove It To The Grave Then Just Replaced The Engine..But i Would Take It back To Whoever Worked On Your Vehicle..Hope This Helps..

1998 Ford Ranger 4.0L Head Gasket Issue?

I think I have a leaking head gasket by the number 3 cylinder (passanger rear). It throws a p0303 misfire code from time to time. If I change out the plug it will go a couple months before throwing it again. The old plug does have a slightly sweet coolant smell also. The truck uses a small amount of coolant each month as well (%26lt; 1qt) but not signs of leakage under the truck. There is no sign of coolant in the oil when I change it and I can't see any signs of oil in the coolant but not postive on how to tell for sure. The truck does not run hot. The exhaust does not show excessive smoking either but does have the slightly sweet coolant smell. Is this a small leak in the head gasket? Are there other causes I should look into? If the head gasket, should I try one of the head gasket sealers out there first and, if so, any recommendations? If replacing is my only option, any ideas on what ballpark cost I should expect in NE? Thanks for advance for any help.1998 Ford Ranger 4.0L Head Gasket Issue? The coolant smell found on the sparkplug, and the other facts that you've mention, tells us that there was really a leak between cylinder head and cylinder block. Water around the base of the sparkplug, can cause it to become busted thus misfire occures. In this situation sealer cannot solve the problem. The only way is to make top overhaul of your engine, to find out wharpage, this either at cylinder head or at cylinder block, The gasket is not reusable.

About the cost your technician can give you a detail, this for labor and parts1998 Ford Ranger 4.0L Head Gasket Issue? For that small a leak, I would try the sealer first.1998 Ford Ranger 4.0L Head Gasket Issue?Head gasket does sound like the problem. You could have a miniscule leak going to the cylinder. That could burn the coolant and foul the plug. I would get a head gasket se that come with all the gaskets from the heads, up. Intake and exhaust manifold gaskets could also be leaking, so get the whole set. Deposits in the water jackets near the cylinder can also create scaling and pitting that can eat pin holes through the block into the cylinder. Good Luck.

  • Head gasket failure in 1994 Toyota truck.?

I just found out that the head gasket on my 1994 Toyota truck failed.A while back the timing belt snapped (at 86,000 miles). At this point The entire head and head gasket where replaced **.

My truck is at 146,000 miles and the head gasket went out again(only 60,000 miles later)?!

The tech (who i trust very much) said that the head itself had corroded and allowed water/coolant to get into one of the cylinders.

Does anybody know how in god's green earth can a toyota (of all brand names) have a cylinder head/head gasket go bad just 60,000 miles after having a head/head gasket replaced?

I do not mistreat this truck whats so ever.I change oil every 5,000 miles(owners recommends every 7500).I runs SEA FOAM once every 3-5 tanks.I run 89 octane.I only use Pennzoil oil.I use fram oil filters. I use this truck for service calls. This truck is my livelyhood.

**About the timing belt snapping at 86,000 miles.I bought the truck in 1992 with 53,000 miles on the odometer. After purchasing this truck, I discovered that the tires had flat spots, and later some of the seals started to leak. The first owner let this truck set for (at least) one extended period of time.Head gasket failure in 1994 Toyota truck.?I'd lean towards the coolant maintenance, dump %26amp; refill, wasn't done every 2 or 3 years. That gas treatment stuff, (is it OK to call it crap on here?) will hurt anything more than help it.Head gasket failure in 1994 Toyota truck.?1. if your truck doesnt need 89 octane, its pointless to get it

    2. fram filter suck

    3. you dont need to run seafoam that much..Head gasket failure in 1994 Toyota truck.?'Its a toyota' whats that got to do with anything. lets see im replacing the Celica engine for the second time.

At 146k you will have problems. Choose to fix them as they come or get a large car payment.

If you do the head gasket yourself its $100-$200 in 1 weekend.

FYI - Sea foam, and 89 Octane are a waist. Penz is not that good of oil.

How much would a b18 head need milled to achieve 11:1?

Repaired head gasket truck sat for at least half a year before being fixed now fixed signs of antifreeze mixin

did a head gasket repair on chevy 2500 1990 truck had blown head gasket for half a year or more but was not driven for quite a while and not after head gaskets failed thought they were repaired dont know though rocer arm covers still had antifreeze sludge on them when i did test run changed oil afterwards now starting to notice antifreeze sludge again could this be because oil sat in dispair for so long that it caused build up if so how many times will i have to change the oil to clear oil system thank youRepaired head gasket truck sat for at least half a year before being fixed now fixed signs of antifreeze mixinI would change the oil as often as possible, all that coolant sittin on the valvetrain for such a long time can really mess up the rest of the engine. After all that time coolant is definatly going to be crammed in all the little crevices and now running the engine is certain to shake some loose. Change it really often and closely inspect the oil when you drain it.Repaired head gasket truck sat for at least half a year before being fixed now fixed signs of antifreeze mixinYou could try running some motor flush through it... that will break up the sludge. k %26amp; w motor flush from autozone works well. Otherwise it will flush itself out with time if you are sure it is fixed and not still leaking.... to check you can buy some uv dye and put it in the antifreeze, then drive for a bit and check the oil with a blacklight and look for the uv dye.

99 Chevy lumina wont run right?

i changed the head gaskets the heads were not warped so put it back together now when i try to start it, it will rough idle and die the plenium smells rich like its flooding and it acts like it needs timed but i don't see how that would be because i did'nt mess with the timing at all, however if it is a timing issue how do you time a computer controlled timing system

How long does it take a "Dead" battery to build up enough juice to start a car?

I had to call out from work today, and may need to on Monday and Wednesday, as my battery is %26quot;Dead%26quot; and car wouldnt turn over (This the one with the blown head Gasket, seems it really wore out Battery.) I wonder how many %26quot;Hours%26quot; until i let it run enough for the Alternator to charge it up? I almost had it started the last time, its very very close but the battery is now depleted...

I also put changing the Head and Gasket for it over my Job at this point. Im just wondering about how many %26quot;Hours%26quot; the battery should sit to get Juice.. its literally that borderline on its Energy. After like three turns, its dead... (Three attempts, i should say.)

Now that its warm, seems it has mych better chance to start...How long does it take a %26quot;Dead%26quot; battery to build up enough juice to start a car?It depends a lot on the temperature. A seemingly dead battery after cranking it for awhile has actually depleted the electrolyte closest to the plates - after it sits awhile, the electrolyte will diffuse throughout the battery with the more potent electrolyte furthest from the plates giving it somewhat of a second wind - but, be assured, it hasn't charged up by any stretch of the meaning.

Rather than tax your alternator, I would recommend picking up a small, 10 amp charger and letting the battery charge up for three or four hours. How long does it take a %26quot;Dead%26quot; battery to build up enough juice to start a car?The only way to fully charge the battery is using a battery charger, with a very flat battery, I would expect to sharge it for approx 24 hours. The Alternator will never fully charge it.How long does it take a %26quot;Dead%26quot; battery to build up enough juice to start a car?take it out and bring it in the hose. the heat from the house will bring it up some. i had to do that before. How long does it take a %26quot;Dead%26quot; battery to build up enough juice to start a car?I bought a battery charger for my home. They run about $20-$40 depending upon capacity. It's saved me a few times from low battery charge. I also use it to charge my backup battery since I live a long way away from a parts store.

A car's alternator will probably take about an hour to recharge a battery. Letting a battery sit won't let it recharge enough to start the car. However, when a battery sits, it can get some of the depleted charge back, but maybe not enough to start the car.

If the battery is dead because it is worn out (dead cell), there may be nothing you can do other than buying another battery.

  • Head gasket replacement...?

1999 Subaru Forester 4 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic

I took my car in for the coolant additive that is need every 40,000 miles to prevent head gasket failure and I was told that both head gaskets are leaking and so is the water pump and that I missed my scheduled additive. What I need to know it what do I need to get to change all of it. I know I need the head gaskets, bolts, head gasket sealant, water pump, water pump seal, water pump gasket sealer, and a timing belt. I know I need a few other seals(intake I think) but I don't know what they are called and if I should replace anything else while I have the engine broke down. What do I need to replace the head gaskets and water pump? Instead of paying $3000 to get it done, I'm doing it myself for $350-$400 since I know how.Head gasket replacement...?The first thing would be to take out the heads and check on the cylinders liners if scratched by pistons by over heat.

As from there a list of parts could be made.

Also try to get a manuel such as Haynes or other.
